Q: Hello, I’m going to start a correctional course at San Joaquin Valley College very soon and I’m hoping you can help me with some questions I have. Are California correctional officers sworn peace officers? And are they able to carry a gun while off-duty? If yes, does it have to be concealed or in the open? I tried to look on the correctional officers’ site but could not find any information. Please respond and thank you for your time. -- Rick Carrasco A:...

Q: We drove past Dan Gamel’s RV lot on Buck Owens Boulevard over the holiday and noticed it was empty. Have they relocated in Bakersfield? — Tim P. Ross A: Dan Gamel’s Bakersfield RV Center has closed its Buck Owens Boulevard location, according to Joyce Dillingham, the director of marketing for the Fresno-based corporate office of Dan Gamel Inc. The company is currently in negotiations on a new site in Bakersfield and could begin moving into the new location during...

Q: Can you tell me why the terminal gate tunnels at the new airport are not being used? — Dorothy Galland A: Boarding bridges — the tunnellike structures that connect the terminal gate to the aircraft — are being used at Meadows Field but only for boarding jets, according to Teresa Hitchcock, a spokeswoman for the airport. Delta, Continental and US Airways fly jets out of Bakersfield. United Airlines, however, flies only turboprops — planes with propellers. ...

Q: What has happened to The Tree Foundation of Kern? They do not return calls or take e-mails. I called the Chamber of Commerce. Do they even exist any more? — Pam Landis “We’re in transition but I guarantee that we are alive. We will come back with a vengeance,” said foundation president John Moorhouse. Dana Karcher recently resigned as executive director of the foundation. Moorhouse said Friday that about six people are actively involved in the foundation...

Q: I’m wondering why a local trucking company is able to park its rigs and trailers on Bakersfield College’s southwest parking lot. Many nights there is only one truck, sometimes as many as three are parked. A few trucks on a large parking lot may not seem like a big deal, but does this mean there are plans to park more vehicles there? I don’t have room for some stuff in my garage. Maybe I’ll just move it to the mostly empty parking lot. — Mark Weir A:...

Q: I have a couple of questions regarding the CW network. 1. Why can’t I get it on DIRECTV? (They gave us the old WB network out of San Diego.) 2. Can I get it by turning off my satellite dish and using just regular TV? I’m just curious and I thank you for your response. –– Bryan Jackson A: According to KGET-TV 17, which broadcasts the station locally, the CW is available only on digital over the air broadcast. To get the channel, either buy a digital...

Question: Why are the Amtrak California buses, that shuttle passengers between the Bakersfield AMTRAK station and the Los Angeles station, licensed in Wyoming and not in California? If the geography that I learned in elementary school is still accurate, Wyoming is not on this route. Is it because the licensing and other fees for commercial vehicles is cheaper in Wyoming? –– Art Murray Answer: Not cheaper, but easier. “It’s a small state and it’s very...

Question: I would like to know if the Bakersfield Police Department or Kern County Sheriff’s Office accepts donations of cars? The car I wish to donate is always in the top 10 of most ripped off car. I thought maybe they might buy these popular (to the thieves) cars, equip them with cameras and GPS tracking devices, and park them in seedy areas, with the hope that the car would get ripped off, thus leading law enforcement to bigger fish. I'm assuming a donation would be tax...

Question: Why is it that car rental companies can charge a fee for renting to a driver under 25 years of age even when the driver declines insurance coverage and is using his or her own insurance? How is this not age discrimination when an “underage” driver has a surcharge in which nothing is purchased and no service provided? — Christopher McCarthy The answer, according to Tim Howe, a lobbyist for a major U.S. car rental company, is based on risk analysis. ...
