Q: My 82-year-old mother has held season tickets the last two years for Broadway plays at Rabobank. I drive her there since she no longer drives. While attending “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which was excellent by the way, we were forced to park in the lot on the other side of the railroad tracks south of the theater in the dark and walk over the tracks to get to Rabobank. At 82 she is slow-of-foot and twice she almost tripped on the tracks. I asked the parking attendant if we...

Q: What happened to the assisted living complex that was supposed to be built on Auburn Street between Fairfax (Road) and Morning Drive? I've seen no action there in a long time. -- Sharon Bush A: The land is slated for a 79-room assisted living complex and 60 single-family homes, said John "Buzz" Kind, a consultant for developer Vaughn Properties.   The land, about 18.5 acres, has been graded. Workers are now laying sewer pipes. Once improvements such as curbs and...

Q: Long ago the city promised that it was going to fix the timing of the traffic lights on Niles and Monterey streets in east Bakersfield. Please find out why this continues to be stalled.  — R.A. Campbell, Bakersfield A: Steve Walker, city traffic engineer, said there were two problems coordinating those signals. “With signal coordination, the side-street traffic would have to wait longer to get a green signal. Fuel consumption and smog generation would increase...

Q: I haven’t seen anything scheduled for the Civic Auditorium lately. Is it being underutilized? — Howard Krauter A: Steve Womack, general manager of the Rabobank Theater and Convention Center, said: “The problem could be just the name. It is known by several (names) but the official name is the Rabobank Theater and Convention Center. If you were strictly looking for Civic Auditorium you would not come across any events. “I am happy to report 203 events were...

Q: A reader noticed activity at the northwest corner of Buena Vista Road and Ming Avenue. What is being developed on this property? What appears to be a “construction shack” has been set up within the last 10 days. Thanks. — Bill Carter A: The construction trailer will serve as an information center for University Park, a Castle & Cooke residential development, said Renee Massey, a company communications manager. The center should be open in early May....

Q: I live off James Road and am curious about the pipeline going in along James Road and North Chester. I understand Chevron is putting it in, but from where to where and why? Thank you, — Allen Platnick A: “Chevron is currently in the process of installing approximately 8 miles of a new water export pipeline,” Chevron spokeswoman Carla Musser confirmed via e-mail. “The new line upgrades will include the latest corrosion-proofing technologies. The water export...

Q: How did Stockdale Highway in Bakersfield get its name? — Patricia Stockdale-Tersi, Riverside A: According to a 2004 bulletin published by the Kern County Historical Society, Stockdale Highway likely was named either for the Stockdale Country Club (which began in 1925) or Stockdale Ranch, an early lavish estate in the area. The Stockdale subdivision was created several years later, around 1928, with Henry Mack buying the land and building the first house on the corner of Fairway...
