Q.: We have heard that the Lake Isabella Auxiliary Dam is not being repaired because the water rights are coming up for renewal in 2010. We also understand that the Los Angeles Metropolitan Water District intends to bid for the rights to the stored water. Can you confirm this rumor or refute it? Being a former employee of Kern County Land Company (KCL), I am aware that KCL joined with the Corps of Engineers financially to increase the height of the dam to make the proposed flood control...

Q.: Not too long ago, a new signal light was installed where Wenatchee Avenue dead-ends at Columbus Street. There is a sign “NO RIGHT TURN ON RED” from Wenatchee to Columbus. When there are no cars coming, you may have to wait at least 5 minutes for the light to change to turn right. Before the signal light, there was a stop sign. We never had any problems with cars turning right from Wenatchee onto Columbus. The problem was turning left onto Columbus from Wenatchee. Now because...

Q.: We are considering putting in a new fence on our property which has an alley for an apartment complex on the other side. Our neighbors on either side have replaced their fence and both of their fences extend further into the alley than ours currently does. How do we find out where our lot line is? A.: The deed will contain a legal description, which will be a start. But to know exactly where the line is, you have to hire a professional surveyor, according to the Kern County...

Q.: I read somewhere that the new fluorescent bulbs that are supposed to replace our iridescent light bulbs contain mercury and should NOT be disposed of in the regular trash. Is this the case? If so, how does the city of Bakersfield propose we handle the disposal of these? Thank you. — Susan Hamilton A.: You read correctly. Like batteries, it’s prohibited to dispose of fluorescent light bulbs in your home trash can. In fact, it’s against the law. Take them to the...

Q.: What is the huge building being built in the northeast corner of Saunders Park? — Kirk Beavers A.: Game on. That’s a multipurpose recreational building for roller hockey, basketball and indoor soccer. The project may be finished by March or April, said Allen Abe, assistant director of the city’s Recreation and Parks Department.

Q.: Recently we read that the CHP was going to provide additional patrolling on Highway 119 between Highway 43 and the city of Taft. I did notice for a while that the CHP was present on most of my trips between these locations.  I would like to know what the statistics were as far as number of citations and type of citations issued during these added patrol hours. Is the CHP planning additional patrolling because of these statistics? –– Dan Brito A: In November, officers...
