Q: Perhaps someone at The Californian could enlighten me as to what is being done by all the pole line, well drilling and associated work being done in the Goose Lake Slough on both sides of Allen Road? — Darrel Somers The project, on Allen just south of Brimhall Road, is a water storage and banking project at the Rosedale-Rio Bravo Water Storage District, said Operations Superintendent Robert Coffee. The Kern-Tulare and Rag Gulch water districts and the Kern County Water...

Q: The intersection of Rosedale Highway and Renfro Road was widened last summer in preparation for a light. The lights were installed this fall and it appears that the intersection is complete, yet they have still have not been turned on. Why? This is a busy and dangerous intersection that would greatly benefit from the lights on. What gives? — Margaret Palmer A: Traffic lights can take time to build because they often involve other road improvements, plus there can be delays in...

Q: I am curious as to WHY when traveling eastbound on Auburn at Oswell, the farthest right-hand lane is marked right turn only.  There are two lanes on the west side of Oswell, and two lanes on the east side. Who determines this and what is the logic behind it? Why can it not be a straight and/or right turn lane? — Rick Gildez A: Steve Walker, Bakersfield’s traffic engineer, made the determination seven or eight years ago, he said. Traffic there is about evenly split...

Q: What is the status of Castle & Cooke’s commercial development the Crossings at River Walk?   The intended enterprise seems very behind in its intended timeline. Cause? If all the commercial space has not been predetermined/leased, a breakfast place there would be wonderful. Since C&C promotes “walking neighborhoods,” pedestrian patronage of a restaurant for breakfast would be ideal. — Mary Webb Castle & Cooke’s planned southwest...

Q: With an IKEA distribution plant at the foot of the Grapevine, why doesn’t Bakersfield have an IKEA retail store?   — Gerry Craig The answer is simple, according to Duane Keathley, senior vice president of commercial retail and investments at Bakersfield’s CB Richard Ellis office. Bakersfield is just too small to draw in the Swedish furniture retailer, Keathley said. And it’s expensive to open a new store, he said. IKEA needs “a market, a...
