Q: When is the southwest WinCo Foods building to start? Projected opening date? Thanks for your help!
— Lisa Conners
A: The project is set to go before the Bakersfield City Council for approval on May 7, said Marc Gauthier, a principal planner with the city.
The developer hopes to start construction this summer, with an opening planned for late 2009, he said.
Q: With the possibility of a Target being built at the Shops at River Walk, whatever happened with the talk or rumors of plans to build a SuperTarget at the corner of Gosford Road and Panama Lane a while back?
— Ralph Lara
A: Castle & Cooke is moving forward with bringing a SuperTarget to the northwest corner of Gosford Road and Panama Lane, said Bill Sampson, the company’s senior vice president for commercial properties.
But a Target spokeswoman hedged her bets....
Q: I have a question for “Ask the Californian.” What happened to the rocket that was on top of the Padre Hotel? Is it in storage at the Kern County Museum (where it should be), or in someone’s garage? Just curious. I’ve done a little nosing around on the Internet, but couldn’t find an answer. It’s a Bakersfield landmark and should be preserved, in my opinion. Thanks!
— Roger Taylor
A: The Californian called Brett Miller, one of the new owners of...
Q: What’s going on at the southeast and northeast corners of Old Farm Road and Noriega Road? One of the empty lots is right next to a school, does that land belong to the school district?
— Roger Arellano
A: There are no applications for development of the northeast corner at this time, said Jennie Eng, a principal planner with the city of Bakersfield. The southeast corner is the future home of Polo Community Park, maps show.
“One more question, are all...
Q: I see from your story on liquor licenses that the Highland Cafe on No. Chester recently received one. Does that mean they’re reopening?
— Nancy Garrett
A: The Highland Cafe at 2201 N. Chester is now open again. Reach the restaurant at 393-2669.
Q: Can you tell me who is responsible for maintaining Mall View Road between Mount Vernon Avenue and Fashion Place? It seems it was poorly designed from the start, going from two lanes to one and then back to two. Now with all the fast food places there and the center lane paint nearly gone it's dangerous. Now with the proposed expansion that’s going to be built, it will only get worse. Do you know if plans are in the works to make it two lanes all the way through to the East Hills...
Q: What are the best tourist attractions in Bakersfield?
— Arman Domingo
A: Seeing as this is a pretty subjective topic, we’ve unleashed Bakersfield.com bloggers on the question. Here are a sampling of their responses:
C’mon, this is a joke right? Unfortunately with ol’ Buck gone, what’s left?
— woofwoof
CALM is on my list as is Pioneer Village. Jerry’s Pizza should also be on any music lover’s list.
— TomW
The mistake...
Q: Why is a beautiful and expensive block wall being built on Stockdale Highway between Stine Road and McDonald Way?
— Beverly Bowman
A: The wall is part of the city’s efforts to relieve congestion along Stockdale Highway near Highway 99 by adding one lane of traffic in each direction. To make room, Bakersfield’s Public Works Department intends to narrow some of the median and eliminate parking along part of the highway. Homes north of Stockdale between Stine and...
Q: I read your piece in today’s paper (Mar. 10) about the Shops at River Walk [having no clear timeline for the completion of additional stores and restaurants]. But there is a major foundation nearing completion with lots of plumbing, etc.
The location is directly behind BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, and is directly in front of the lake in front of the Bright House Amphitheater.
Can you ask Castle & Cooke what this construction is...
QUESTION: Several weeks ago there was something printed (Pete Tittl?) about a hot dog place coming to town. It was not a chain and was to occupy the corner of 19th and Baker. Nothing ever showed up. Has it been relocated? — Howard Krauter
ANSWER: The simple answer: We don’t know. Pete Tittl, The Californian’s restaurant critic, did write in August that a restaurant by the name E-Boys was to sell 7 1/2-inch hot dogs of various kinds from a location on East 19th Street....
Location:
Stockdale Highway and Allen Road,
Bakersfield, CA
Q: I’ve been noticing that many new buildings have been put up on the southwest corner of Stockdale Highway and Allen Road, in the little corner with Plumberry’s and the Sonic. Do you know what businesses are to arrive in these new buildings? — Sherie George Construction on the new commercial center will likely be completed in the next 30 to 60 days, said Alex Bendlin, a senior associate with CB Richard Ellis, the company marketing the space. A lease has been signed...
Location:
Hageman Road and Mohawk Street,
Bakersfield, CA
Q: On Hageman and Mohawk there appears to be construction starting. Can you find out what they are planning to build in that field? And if they are building something, are they going to widen Mohawk? — Casey Bowman There is some work being done at the southeast corner of Hageman Road and Mohawk Street, but it’s cleanup, not construction. Virginia Parker, a spokeswoman for Ogden, Utah-based Flying J Inc, the owner of the land, said there were some tumbleweeds along the... |
