Q: Can you tell me what is going in at the 500 block of Oak Street. It’s a huge lot. — Anna Toy A: That lot, at the 500 block of Oak Street, is owned by Catalina Barber Corp., according to the County Assessors Recorders Office. It was listed as a service shop for the car dealership, which also used the extra space to hold cars, said Jeff Graham, chief residential appraiser of the department. The service shop was torn down this year. According to the City Planning Department,...

Q: Why are the oleander trees that line the median along Highway 178 (roughly between Union and Mount Vernon avenues) dying? They have always been so beautiful this time of year and leave a positive impression on my friends and family when they come for graduations, weddings and Father’s Day celebrations. — Mary Jones A: First off, these aren’t trees. Oleander is a bush. Second, there are a couple of reasons why these shrubs might be suffering, said Fred Steele,...

Do you know if the WinCo Foods store in southwest was approved May 7th? Any info is appreciated. — Lisa Conners The proposed WinCo store wasn’t approved by the Bakersfield City Council in May. At a council meeting, attorney John Farrow, representing Citizens for Responsible Growth, objected to the city’s environmental impact report, which he said was flawed. The city’s environmental consultant asked the council to delay considering the project so Farrow’s...

I, my friends & family love Joseph's for dinner, however it's very small and is crowded on week-ends. The wait staff barely has room to move around tables. why doesn't Joseph's move to a larger place? I'm sure there are many locations available in Bakersfield. Same goes for Rosa's. — B. Harrison We spoke to Luis Ortiz, the owner of Joseph’s on F Street downtown, and he told us it’s not always busy, just on Fridays and Saturdays. “That’s the way it...

Did I miss it? What happened to the planned federal courthouse downtown? — Don Kurtz Answered by reporter James Geluso in a story Monday: The federal courthouse is still coming. Eventually. “This is just an ongoing saga,” said Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, on Friday. Bakersfield has met the requirements of the General Services Agency, the federal agency that handles civilian buildings. The city is willing to dedicate the land, and City Manager Alan Tandy convinced...

Q: My question is, why does the city spend the time, manpower and money to plow the Kern River bed?  It looks better, but is it necessary? — W.L. Henry A:  According to city of Bakersfield Water Resources Manager Florn Core, the river’s ability to carry flood waters depends on the city’s annual maintenance work. The city does the work, “to maintain the relatively flat grade of the river and to remove any vegetation in the flood way. It’s to...

Q: Is Buena Vista Road between White Lane and Panama ever going to be widened at the railroad crossing? While we’re in that neighborhood, when will Panama Lane be widened at its railroad crossing? — Bill Steck A: The Buena Vista Road railroad widening project is being designed now, but it needs approval from the California Public Utilities Commission and the San Joaquin Valley Railroad. Construction would begin six to 18 months after that approval. The Panama Lane railroad...

Q: I am a new resident. My question is why some government entity recently completed a canal just west of Coffee and Truxtun and re/detention ponds at Jewetta and Stockdale? How much was the cost? I believe the odds of the swollen Kern River needing this system are somewhere between zero and none, but I would appreciate an answer. Thank you — Ray Reilly A:  Welcome to Bakersfield. It’s not always this dry. First, these are two separate projects. The city did the...

Q: The announcement that Channel 58 will feature an “extension” of Channel 29’s morning news brought the following question to my mind. Why is there no local morning news here in Bakersfield on weekends? Does it have to do with the number of viewers? — Bryan Jackson The Californian went to some local news directors for answers. KBAK-TV 29 and KBFX-CA 58 have been focusing on expanding the morning news on 58 and want to see how that works before exploring a...
