Q: Maybe you can answer one question for me. I’ve been going to the 24 hour fitness at 3400 Bernard St. for years. Across the street from it (south side) is a big eye sore, it’s a big, boarded up building, been set on fire years ago. I was wondering when the city is going to do something about it? Thank you, — Beverly Dahl A: The series of boarded up buildings that sits inside a fenced-in area on Bernard Street is owned by its next door neighbor, Bakersfield...

Q: What’s going on at the northwest corner of Reina Road and Old Farm Road?  — Roger Arellano A: The new Roman Catholic parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, will use the 20-acre plot for a 1,500-seat sanctuary, meeting rooms and possibly a school. The land is owned by the Diocese of Fresno. Father Perry Kavookjian, who is organizing the new parish, said he expects all of the land to be utilized by the new parish, even if they decide to not build a new school. ...

Q: I live in Bakersfield. I was born and raised here. I will be 65 years old in April so I have seen a lot of changes. I want to know if there is a law or what is required to keep cars from going down the road with their boom boxes or whatever you want to call them, the bass turned up so loud that you can’t hear a siren coming. I was almost killed by a fire engine because the guy next to me had it so loud that when the signal turned green I usually hesitate to make sure nobody else...

Q: While driving north on Highway 99, just past Kimberlina Road there’s something being built on the west side . And if you can, I’d like to know what is being built there. There is some kind of metal A-frames standing along side of the highway. Thank you very much for your time on this. — Ed Rummans A: The metal A-frames are an experiment in emissions-free power generation. Since 2005, Rancho Cordova-based Clean Energy Systems Inc. has been testing technology that...

Q: Have you heard any talk about the East Hills Wal-Mart store becoming a Super Wal-Mart by buying the empty Von’s market next to it thus making a huge, one-stop market? — David T. Selzam, Sr. A:  Although the company recently remodeled the store, Wal-Mart has no plans to turn its East Hills location into a Super Wal-Mart, company spokesman Aaron Rios said by e-mail. But such a conversion may not be out of the question if conditions change. “Currently we have no...

Q: I notice that the city is doing work on a new bridge over the Kern River south of Stockdale Highway at the current south end of Allen Road. Some questions: Why during low city financial periods are we working on this project? What is the reason for this bridge, at this time Allen Road south does not exist between Ming and the current end of Allen south of Stockdale Highway. Also with no development going on in the area, who is paying for the road and bridge?   — Dan...
