Q: Does anyone besides me think that they’ve gone overboard with the spaces available for handicapped parking? You enter any major parking lot and it seems there are fours rows reserved for handicapped parking. Do we really have that many drivers who are truly handicapped? — Robert Parsons A: Greg Fenton, senior engineering manager at Kern County Engineering & Survey Services, said the number of handicapped spaces in area parking lots is regulated by state law. In...

Q: Castle & Cooke’s new  building is nearing completion at River Walk and they have begun the dirt moving for the new Target. They have also begun pipe laying on new construction to the east of the Castle & Cooke building: What is that going to be? Also, they have cleared some grass and torn up the sidewalk northeast of the Castle & Cooke building, actually in the park land, (and) put up a fence and declared construction under way.  What is that going to be?...

Q: Will the Moffitts be able to stay in their home now because of the money raised through “Share the Season”? — Wesley Mijares A: Doris Moffitt and her son, Michael Moffitt Jr., will most likely not be able to stay in their Frazier Park rental home, which is in foreclosure and has been taken over by the bank, the widow said. “But with the help of Share the Season I will have the money to pay for first and last month’s rent and hopefully moving fees to...

Q. Can you find out why the Oscar-buzz film “Milk” is not playing here in Bakersfield, even though it has already opened in such gay-rights hotbeds as Modesto and Stockton? Or perhaps you can get the theater managers to confirm an opening date? — Whitney Weddell A. Actually, it opened in Stockton, not Modesto, said Jack Foley, president of distribution for Focus Features, which produced “Milk.” The biopic of trailblazing, openly gay San Francisco politician...

Q: What happened to the Fontana Pie company? Do they still exist? I remember the custard pie as being a childhood favorite. Any one know where I could get one? — Leslie DeArmon A: After several decades in business, the family-owned Fontana’s Pie Shop in East Bakersfield turned off its ovens for good in 1999. According to Californian archives, the first Fontana’s pies were baked by Eda and Caesar Fontana in the 1930s, using fruit from the family’s own trees. Two...

Q: Some families, or couples, have disabled placards on their cars. When the disabled person passes away, what should be done about the placard? It doesn’t seem fair to have special priviledges for a spouse or other members of the family who don’t need them. Thank you — Rena Butler A: The placard should be destroyed or cut up because it is illegal for anyone else beside the registered person to use it, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Fines...
