CORRUPTION IN BAKERSFIELD
There is corruption in Bakersfield that is being ignored..On 3/11/08 the Bakersfield Police Department used excessive force on a suspect {leonard Marella} who did run.. but they continued the force after they had they had Marella hand cuffed and not resisting as a result marella had to have stitches and was bruised severely and got his front tooth knocked out..they also arrested another gentlemen that was video taping the incident.. 8/15/05 The weapons used by three Kern county jailers to kill a defenseless inmate was simple Boot,Elbow,Fist.. James Moore of Bakersfield was bound,Hands and feet, When three Kern county deputies struck heavy blows to his head. Moore,30 died 6 days later at memorial hospital from blunt force trauma to the head.It began when detention deputies took Moore into the parking garage, intending to put him in a patrol car and take him to Kern Medical Center, Jagels said. They wanted him checked out because of the artery hold and because of his behavior, Jagels said. Detention officials cuffed Moore's hands to a waist restraint and they restrained his legs, Jagels said. Moore was on the ground when one detention deputy kicked his head, Jagels said. After Moore was strapped to a gurney, he said, multiple deputies hit Moore in the head with their fists and elbows. "The victim was completely restrained, could not present a danger to anyone," Jagels said. "The amount of force was not justified." The investigation of the beating began when a sheriff's deputy who witnessed part of the incident wrote a memo to a supervisor, Jagels said. Bakersfield, CA: (May-23-07) Thomas Teagarden Jr. filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming that he was wrongly arrested and charged after a police officer planted cocaine in his car. The incident, which took place on April 21, 2006, began when Officer Sherman Rooks pulled Teagarden over near his condominium for allegedly not wearing his seatbelt. Teagarden allowed Rooks and a police dog to search his car. Then Rooks produced a bag of cocaine, which Teagarden claimed had been planted, as the cocaine was not in his car. Teagarden alleged the officer demanded he apologize to Rook's wife, with whom Teagarden said he had a sexual relationship with years earlier, leading him to believe that the arrest was revenge. In a settlement reached, the city of Bakersfield agreed to pay him $250,000. Thursday, August 23, 2007 55 comments from 17 users

You know, I'll be fifty years old on May 11, and in all that time I've never been abused by a police officer anywhere. If these criminals don't like getting their a**es kicked, perhaps they shouldn't go around breaking the law in the first place. posted by

It's sad to say, but yes, there are "some" Bakersfield police officers that are corrupt as you say. Although corruption is a fact of life in every agency around the world, there are good cops. Back home (Oklahoma) the towns were smaller and the corruption was more noticeable. Those who spoke out about it were "taken care of" so to speak, such as family harrassment, etc. We even had a chief of police who raped an 18 year old woman who pressed charges against him. He was actually convicted of a "lesser" crime (I don't recall exactly what), but they rehired him a couple of years later. THEN, he did it again. Shortly after, his wife, who was a clerk for the local clerk's office was caught by one of her employees, embezzling funds. She was never arrested and was allowed to borrow the money from her 401k to repay. She was even able to retire with FULL benefits. So, sadly it's everywhere. But God is looking out for us and those "bad cops" will have to answer in the end.

Johnburnssucks, I have to agree with you. Just wondering though what makes good cops turn into bad cops? Stress on the job, at home? And I'd have to say that most of these individuals, if not ALL that are smacked around, aren't just walking down the street minding their own business. My nephew continues to be in and out of trouble by the State of CA and the Feds and he's never been touched. Makes you wonder, huh?

First of all I have never been arrested or in jail, so I don't know anything about this. We have called police regarding neighbors and unfortunately family incident with my sister who was under influence of drugs. On most occasions, they were very courteous and caring. They have a very hard job and I would certainly not want to change jobs with them. I have heard that some of these people arrested were under influence of meth or cocaine and I have heard that they can be very aggressive and violent when on these drugs. I am not really defending the officers who beat up prisoners in jail, but just saying they have to use a certain amount of force to control these people. I have a neighbor who works at Lerdo Jail. I has told me about his job -- probably not the really bad stuff though. I am sure there are good and bad correctional officers out there as in most every profession. I too have heard there is corruption in County Sheriff's Office and at Lerdo itself. Well, it will catch up to them eventually, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but they will get caught in the end. Too bad a few bad apples spoil the apple cart. posted by

bO8er: Calling isolated incidents "corruption ignored" is quite a stretch. The inmate that died is not being ignored. Neither are the other charges you cite. I recall seeing the amater video of the fugitive taken into custody. He was a known criminal and armed and resisting arrest. He was not being beaten with batons, the dog was restrained, I couldn't see anything I'd call excessive force. The video plainly shows an officer telling the cameraman to step back. The guy didn't; he got arrested. I don't know what your past experience with law enforcement is. I am sorry it happened. You write with a tone of hostility toward police officers that slants you post. posted by

Seems to me sox, that it all gets back to supervision. Just like in most cos. You can call someone a Detention Officer, Detentions Deputy, Deputy, etc. but it is the superrvision factor that seems to be the salient part of the equation in some of these cases. God knows CA requires tons of training whether in just corrections or law enfrocement in general and I'm sure the SO in Kern meets and probably exceeds the required amount. of Supervision=> Hold People Accountable! After all, isn't that what the good Deputy was trying to do in the Moore case BTW? Sure seems like it from what I have read. Supervising ain't easy. Most people are good at the technical aspects of their job, but fall down when it comes to real effective supervision. posted by

The cops here in Kern County are criminals. They ride around and harass and kill people....sounds like a gang to me. What happen to the Leon Anderson investigation.?It does not take this long. WTF! I am sick and tired of Kern County sweeping the actions of its officers under the rug. It is time to take a good look at KC law enforcement. It does not take this long to convict 2 people. They murdered James Moore many moons ago. This is a open and shut case. Convict them in the same fashion you convicted VB. A man is dead. He did not deserve to die at the hands of some underpaid fake co's. This just really pisses me off. This is how KC ignores corruption. They wait so long to convict a person .....you kind of forget about the situation. Well guess what I am not going to forget. Leon Anderson was murdered..Why? He was shot nine times in the face and neck while running, after being tased....how did this happen? BPD please answer this man's families questions. They have a right to know. He has family that loved him dearly. A 16 year old was just killed ! Why? Oh the cops said he hit one of them with a car. The BPD's credibility is about equal to Billary. posted by

Chandi Duke You need to read before you comment. When I referred to the 16 year old boy that was killed I was talking about the 16 year old Hispanic kid. This is not about blacks this is about justice. This is about right and wrong. Audrey I don't know what I would do if I were in charge....but I do know I would not harass people because they are white, brown, or black. I would not go around killing people. Give the cops the benefit of the doubt...for what? They are crooked and they kill innocent people. I have zero faith in your justice system. posted by

Audrey I know they protect me and I appreciate the protection. I pay for it. I will not praise a cop for what he does. No one praises me. I work too. It is a job. They have to work and make a living. All good cops out there are just fine with me. I pray that every cop makes it home at night. I just don't care for the crooked ones. I have LE in my family and I know that there are good cops..but...when cops go around killing people I have issues with that. posted by

#1 Cops are issued a gun for a reason. To stop, and kill if necessary, lawbreakers who pose a threat to innocent people. For instance, a 16 year old using his car as a weapon is a public threat. Cops don't have special powers that help them decide whether someone inside a vehicle is 16 or 36. And they don't have much time to make decisions when they're being run down. They are entitled to protect themselves. You think the cop should have stopped the kid with a non lethal weapon? I think the kid should have used a non lethal vehicle to run over the cop. L ike a bicycle for instance. #2 Cops are supposed to UPHOLD CALIFORNIA LAW by stopping and arresting ex felons who violate the conditions of their parole. If a cop doesn't uphold those laws he won't be a LE officer for long. For instance, anex felon ( on parole) runs as soon as he sees approaching officers. Do you suppose that makes the officers think he's an innocent man just hanging out with his buds? No, especially when those buds are Crip gang members. So they chase the ex felon throughout a neighborhood filled with innocent people. The officer tries a non lethal method of stopping the felon. It doesn't work. Then the felon opens fire on the officer endagering the lives of everyone in the neighborhood who think tthey're safe in their homes. The officer returns fire before he falls, badly injured. Other officers take up the chase and a ex felon ex Crip gang leader is killed. It's all a matter of perspective. posted by

Audrey I don't agree with anything you are saying. We think differently. I don't approve of cops going around thinking they have a license to kill. I feel sorry for you people that are blinded by the actions of cops. They are crooks. When and if it happens to someone close to you ...you will know how Leon's family feels.

This is not about how his family feels. This is about someone who ran, then shot a cop. He is fully responsible for his actions and THAT dictates how his family feels. How do you think they felt each time he broke the law and was arrested? Did he give ANY thought to how his actions made them feel? This is about a felon who committed yet ANOTHER crime with no regard to his family's feelings or well being. And you want to make the police and the public feel guilty for something Anderson brought on himself? Fat chance of that! Our readers recommend: |
