Today is my Birthday!
By a happy Coincidence, the film Once is playing tonight at the Fox Theater downtown on H Street. It starts at 7:30 PM and the cost is only $4. Meet me down there for this film from Dublin, Ireland about a street singer. My dad saw it and said that it was hard to understand the Irish brogues, and there was a girl with a bouquet of roses, and he didn't figure out that she was a flower hawker, and was selling them, until well on. But he said that the music was really good, and he would watch it again just for that. They were up for a Grammy, but Amy Winehouse probably got that one. See the synopsis below.

This modern-day musical is set in Dublin and tells the story of a street musician (the guy) and a street hawker (the girl) who spend a busy week writing, rehearsing, and recording songs that tell the story of their developing love. The key players are “the guy” who works at his father's vacuum repair shop and plays music on street corners for extra cash and “the girl” who is an Eastern European Immigrant with musical aspirations of her own.. The twist in this film is that the main characters aren’t played by big-name actors; they’re played by musicians who are acting. “Once” delves into the personal journey that is song-writing and performance. The actors that star in this film wrote the songs that are performed. This film accomplishes two things: it pays homage to the musicals of old Hollywood and it reinvents the musical.

The song from this movie won the Oscar tonight. Really touching scene, and they performed the song, too. The set was made up to look like the music shop where they met, and The Guy had his beat-up busking guitar, with the holes worn through like Willie Nelson's guitar. There was a wall of guitars behind him, just like in the music shop. The Girl was playing a piano.

When they gave their acceptance, The Guy was really sincere, but he used up all the air time and The Girl didn't get to say anything. It reminded me of the movie, because she played a song she was writing, but she never finished it. It was a good song, and it also told a lot about her relationship with her husband. All throughout the movie, they often could only communicate with each other through song. And one of the themes was that the other people in their lives just didn't get the songs--so why couldn't they just hook up?

It was a beautiful song, and I am glad it won. There were three songs from Enchanted, and one other song, but I predicted it would win, and I wanted it to win.
