where are the children?
why is it that our county is so quick to take children out of the home of parents they in my opinon have no right to call unfit yet have trouble keeping tabs on these young spirits. my 15 year old brother missed his sentence date in MARCH. since then his po has not even CALLED. he has been running the streets with men twice his age.. doing only god knows what. He has been stopped TWICE by the sherrif and still nothing. My father who has chronic kidney failure and lives with my 76 year old grandma is at wits end. we always hear storys about how parolees cant be changed and BLAH BLAH BLAH. ever stop to wonder maybe if th county did there jobs when these kids first cried out for help.... or even after they got into real trouble maybe they wouldnt be so violent?? sure the parents are to blame to but no one is perfect.. and dont tax dollars pay there salarys?? what do we have to do to help these kids?? 18 comments from 13 users

littleone, it is important that us young adults take the time to get involved with todays youth, give them someone to look up to. some people think because they have a rough past they cant or shouldn't reach out to our youth...if anyone can reach our kids its us, see we can relate to what they are going through. A great way to do that is volunteer at a church youth group or an outreach center. Just hanging out with these guys is half the battle, the other half is setting a positive example. My heart goes out to your little bro he will be ok, sometimes people have to learn the hard way but i encourage you to be a hero in his life, it sounds like he needs one. Probations responsibility is very limited, ultimately it's on your shoulders. posted by

I imagine the the Probation Office has a huge case load. They don't just arbitrarilly decide to let people walk the streets when they violated the terms of probation. In the scheme of things, your bro probably falls lower on the priority list of folks who are on probation. Essentially, your brother has to want to do the right thing. He's being given a chance and he's screwing it up. posted by

Too bad such a young person has already hit the discard pile. Parenting is the most difficult job, and more supports are needed for individuals that do not fit some preconceived idea of the mold. We need more teachers per classroom and better tools in all of our classrooms to educate and keep our kids engaged in the process. Too often kids are simply abandoned due to overwhelming shortages of key learning devices and personnel, and no help at home. The world for far too many youngsters can seem very small and forbidding with little chance for escape. We need to find a way to reconnect as a society with our young people. posted by

The county sucks......The county workers also suck...They are rude no matter where you go..... KMC, Lerdo, or DHS. The CPS needs to be stopped. They remove children and place them in foster homes to be molested or killed. Juvenile does nothing for a kid but ruin them. posted by

You said it yourself, littleone . . . ."but no one is perfect." That includes all the people who work in the agencies that you want to condemn for what you perceive to be inaction or inaddequate action. I am not giving the truly lazy ones a pass; there are those in ALL occupations in our community. But like jfrancais said, do you have any idea what the P.O.'s case load is like? Could there be other extenuating circumstances? Is there anything YOU might be able to do to be part of the solution, instead of just complaining? And that crap about "dont tax dollars pay there salarys??" [sic] Yes, and those employees are tax payers, too. So what's your point?

There are enough reasons for you brother's lifestyle to fill a book. Slashing the funding of schools and social services would probably be chapter one. If I were in your place I'd try to keep an open contact with your brother, be accessible and able to help if he asks for it. You can't "make" him decide to do what's for his own good. Right now, the best thing you can do for him is for you to stay focused on practical priorities and goals, otherwise you're not going be able to help anybody you care about. And while your concern is understandable, be fair to yourself. Your brother's choices should not decide yours as well. You have a right to your own life. posted by

A probation officer for the PC1000 folks once told me she had a caseload of about 1700 people. Granted they aren't monitored as closely as convicted probationers are but a few are bound to slip through the cracks anyway. Mind you, these are over 18 kids but I would guess juvenile probation also has a daunting caseload. Who is it around here that is always talking about walking a mile in someone elses shoes? posted by

an odd thing has happened.... 2 days after i posted this blog i got a phone call.. my little brother was picked up and in a holding cell. He is awaiting trial and a good friend of mine who was his campus security at his last school is working closely with probation to get him the best treatment possible.. it could be a group home, it could be camp and at its worse it could be CYA. no matter the out come i can sleep better knowing he is off the streets and safe.. eating... someplace warm and PROTECTED. thatnk you all for your input!
