Not any more unsanitary than allowing the homeless to dig through the trash. In fact, it's a lot more sanitary. True, I would rather see them go to the shelters for safe ,healthy meals, but not all of them will. At least this way they get a meal that isn't covered in rotting trash.posted by

Not any more unsanitary than allowing the homeless to dig through the trash That's not something I'm directly contributing to since I take any leftovers with me when I eat out. The biggest problem is local health laws that prohibit restaurants from donating unsold food to homeless centers. Several cities on the east coast have changed this and the food is picked up by volunteers and is distributed to centers and the homeless. I'll hand my leftovers to a homeless person if I pass one by, but leaving it lying around invites disease and increases trash. Isn't this kind of thing what contributed to the Black Plague in Europe? I'd like to know if cities that this is done in has seen an increase in littering from the food getting blown around, thrown on the ground by uncaring people and an increase in having sanitation workers pick up the food when it's not picked up by the homeless. And who's to say the food will end up in the homeless' hands? posted by

I think this is really more of an urban issue. (Note that the movement started in SF.) I live downtown and see homeless people pawing through dumpsters all the time, often taking the trash out and leaving it in the alley, etc. Leaving leftovers on top allows them to pick it up if they want to. If not, it goes in the trash. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution. I'm just saying it seems to save the homeless some small decorum of dignity and hopefully the rest of us from a mess. posted by

Again people! This is NOT an idea for the average dude. We are talking strictly about the men and/or women who are MOST likely to to eat out of the garbage no matter what you put in it. Hella?

Those people are the ones who fall through the services crack and don't hang around urban population centers. If you want to ensure those people receive this largess, you'll have to go to where they are located. And that's in the worst parts of cities that are high crime and run down. Baketown, that is a great way to help those, who choose to earn a few bucks by collecting and selling the recyclables that a lot of careless people choose to fill our garbage fills with, thanks.

Give where and how you can:note there is a person some 50 feet in the photo who appears as if he would accept that leftover from a human hand.I would be moved to buy an extra if I had the cash and give him both.Every Thanksgiving for the last 30 I plate up the whole meal plus Desserts and drive to the first homeless person(s) I can find till I am all out.There are getting harder to find~but I think it is because the police move them out of this area.It is a small gesture,but I live well below the poverty line.If I am at the store,and they are some who are in need, there's a bit of change or something edible I can spare.
