Tortoise Theft

Herb's article about the woman who had her tortoise stolen reminded me of one of my own.   Unfortunatly, my story does not have a happy ending.  You can find it here.

Interesting side note - the friend who gave me that tortoise is now my husband.  I had no idea things would turn out this way, but somehow he always did.

Bless your tort lovin' heart!! I have a few I need to find homes for, If you know of anyone. I could always be available to give advise. They really are awesome pets. They have tons of personality for reptiles....

That's great news MBUXTON.  I just rasied 3 more tortletts (that's what I call them) and decided to keep two.  I've told my ex-husband's friend that I will take the babies and raise them the first couple of years until they are big enough.  I've managed to raise 4 out of 5 so far.

Yeah, tortletts are a little difficult to raise. Good for you. I have separated my adult girl and boy and hopefully I wont have any more babies. I feel like the old woman in the shoe, I have so-oo many turtles (7) I dont know what to do!! But I love them all and wouldnt give them to anyone who wouldnt take great care of them.

I liked  your interesting story.  I am sorry that Tank was killed.   My best friend had a tortoise named Sherman also.  Hers had been in their family for over 40 years.  Sherman was abducted more than once.  She was able to prove he was part of her family with photos and vet records.  She managed to get him back 3 times from neighbors who had "found" him.   After her divorce while she was tracking down a safe home for Sherman her ex gave him away.   The news just broke my heart so I know she was very upset about it.  Her ex says not to worry Sherman is living with some guy who raises them and knows what he is doing.  But still that was not his call to make.

I worry about the guys who say they "know what they're doing". I have heard of so many people feeding their torts nothing but lettuce or dog food. Tell me where lettuce grows in the desert?? They are indangered, have special needs, and arent easy to care for at first. Once you/they get established it all fun from there. We live in a neat area where these wonderful creatures are native. ps bake town, I loved both of your stories. thanks for posting...

Agreed.  I am VERY wary of the homes they go to.  I have to see them first, make sure they have a good habitat, safe from dogs and make sure they know what to feed them.
