KCAC veterinarian has left the building
Dr. Jennifer McDougle, the veterinarian for the Kern County Animal Control Shelter, has left her position on staff, effective last week. While KCAC is busy trying to fill the position on a permanent basis, this has to be a serious blow to an already embattled department. Seriously, can anything else possibly happen to undermine the effectiveness of our Animal Control facility?

IF I were a vet, I'd volunteer. Best I can do is take in rescues as much as possible (as much as the city will allow). posted by

Certainly more fodder for the public to hurl at the Supervisors for tomorrow's meeting. My bet is that the place will have standing room only, given the two big issues that have intersected at this time. It is too bad that the malingering pet euthanasia problem will probably be overshadowed by our County Clerk's failure to honor the law.

Can't help yourself, can you, adam? It's too bad several vets couldn't get together and volunteer on a rotating basis. That way it would reduce the burden. posted by

theColorNine, allow me to quote from my above statement, "our County Clerk's failure to honor the law." Do you see the word break in that statement? Nor does it imply breaking the law in the above statement. It is a failure to honor the law and uphold the law. As an elected official sworn to uphold the law, I think Ann Barnett (who apparently by her actions is not inclined to do so) should vacate the premises immediately and find work in the provinces of Afghanistan where religion and moral conviction are so highly regarded, just not any bothersome secular laws. posted by

dgrealish, why should veternarians donate and volunteer their services any more than they already do? A lot of veternarians in this county give up a lot of their time and skills in an effort to help less fortunate individuals and animals. Do you just have an issue on coughing up the needed bucks to properly fund a vital community department that has become a pariah within the state of California? Have you read the latest report from the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program? I think you might be surprised by the report.

I'm not suprised the veterinarian left. I'd have to imagine it's a pretty heart-wrentching job to have and it's not suprising there is turnover. If we're lucky, they'll be progressive and hire a vet out of UC Davis's shelter vet program who could help them implement some of the recommedations in the UCD report, but I doubt they'll be that forward-thinking. posted by

We lost a vet..so what...that will just increase more contracts to the local ones..which by the way not many out there are bleeding hearts..infact its all about the buck for the majority...they come in fresh faced and neive from college...soon get hardened and their buisness classes kick in..I can betcha a few are thrilled she stepped down..especially with the price of gas these days..ya need to stop over dramatizing to get you message across..yes there is a problem and yes it needs to be dealt with.. your agenda of mandatory s/n (which i dont agree with) over a lengthy span of time can slow the process but it will do little to nothing to help the ones already incarcerated..if your so all fired up try doing something constructiive..then Ill be impressed..until then your voice just chimes in with the wind ;o)- posted by

DG can answer for herself if she chooses to but it still has nothing to do with the topic. It's your attitude that's likely to turn people away from this topic. Your snide remark about the bloggers and gay weddings for instance. "If you're not to busy..etc" posted by
