Local concert promoter Kurtis Willingham - RIP
Bakersfield has lost another one of it's musical sons and supporters. Kurtis Willingham was a Bakersfield concert promoter, and a good friend to many, as well as a proud father and son - he passed away yesterday August 24th, at the age of 35. Kurtis was always involved in an event of some sort, and seemed to have a guardian angel over his shoulder at all times. He actually did some pretty ambitious productions - Freak Fest for one. I made him tell me the whole story about that event - the only thing I could say was, "Man, you're crazy dude." Some events were better than others, but if you ran into him - he always gave you the, "What's uuuup?" He loved music and local bands.... We'll miss you Kurtis. This message was posted on his Facebook.com profile, by his aunt Lynn Bly: Hello to all the friends of Kurtis Willingham. Bakotopia would like to put together memories of Kurtis for a memorial piece in the 9/4/08 issue of Bakotopia magazine. if you would like to leave some words below, please do. You can also e-mail me at: matt@bakotopia.com, and submit some words and a photo. 4 comments from 4 users

I met Kurtis when I was around 21.No matter what dark cloud tried to follow him around he could find a way to make it funny. We both hit it off with same music interest like boingo, social d and such but our real interest shared was for wildlife, nature and aquariums. When not out partying we could spend hours at a fish breeders house or pet shops talking nerdy fish science or we were working on our tanks.Nothing like having some brews, kickin back watching the fish and talkin life.We then got another friend of mine very into the fish,Mike, and he still to this day was sharing that hobby with him.Kurt used to keep an ugly little barb fish in with his high dollar species only tank just because it was his daughters favorite.Anyways,we could go on forever. We didnt hang much this last few years because I was just doing things diferent in my life and spending more time getting my life straight after alot of hardships but I will always remember those times and just feel sick that only I will now remember them.Everyones got such good memories of Kurt, good times, hard times, life times. We love you bro,you made an impact on who I am today with your persistence to be someone despite your setbacks.Love you Kurt and all your family,Jason S.

Man I am so shocked and sad I'm not even sure what to say. I've known Kurtis since we were 12, He was like my brother, I used to drive him everywhere until he got that crappy Dodge Dart. ha ha We spent a lot of time together until I moved to Venice 10 years ago but still he came to visit and we talked regularly but still not enough. So many memories, Kurtis was a very sweet guy with a great sense of humor and I will miss him terribly, say hi to Micah, I miss you both. Eric posted by

In 1987 my brother, sister and i spent the summer with our cousins Kurtis and Andy in Kellogg, Idaho. We had a blast keeping each other company that summer, even though the weather was miserable for our California selves and we stuck out like sore thumbs with our garrish shorts and "kowabunga" t-shirts. Still, we had a great time. We listened to Kurt's ONE rap song on his walkman the entire summer (Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys!), we almost got arrested by some inbred sheriff for climbing a mountain that apparently belonged to someone else, and we escaped our fathers, whom we had ticked off, by going hiking into the woods until 10 o'clock at night only to come back to a whipping and bed without dinner. I'll never forget us rafting, splashing around that ice cold feather river, or fishing and hanging out. Kurt, you went before your time cuz, and you remind me and all of us of our short, precious time we have here on earth. I hope you are at peace wherever you are, and I extend my love to the Willingham family and all of my cousins - Garrett, Leah, Neal & Andy and their mother Connie. I'll miss you cuz.
