Lost your mojo? Try this! It's the..... ![]() NEWSLETTER The Internet… It brings joy, sadness, helps build lives and offers no remorse should your life hit the skids - but that’s what makes it so intriguing. It also supplies a certain type anxiety keeping us on our toes when we wake up everyday. Who’s going to e-mail me today? Will this be the day I pick the right lottery numbers? Am I going to be fired from my job? I’m wearing my last pair of clean chonies and I have date tonight! Wha? That fear and anxiety is usually accompanied by an often paralyzing frustration that keeps us from moving forward, leaving us with unanswered questions. Hanging out with HowCool.com founder Jim Stidham recently for this week’s feature story, I learned a lot about turning some of that familiar fear into gold. You see, Stidham was a hair close to graduating from college when everyone and their momma decided to dive into the game known as the “Internet business.” In the mid-‘90s computers began popping up in homes everywhere, but functionality was still primitive compared to today’s standards. Fans of the PC and Mac realms worked tirelessly to get ahead. Stidham started HowCool.com as a project during the dot com boom, putting all his effort into making his future happen. Almost a decade later, Stidham is still taking charge of his fears and thinking big. No time to worry about failure, just glory. So to all future entrepreneurs, inventors and out-of-the-box thinkers - trust your instincts, for the Net is your oyster - so sayeth Stidham. On a side note… Bakotopia would like send our condolences to the family and friends of Ashley Teegue who recently passed away in Bakersfield. Ashley was known to many as Starxcore and was friend to many locals as a piercing and tattoo artist at Mad Dog Tattoo in Bakersfield. I met Ashley in 2005 while organizing a benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims at The Dome. Ashley came up onstage to help pass out free giveaways to attendees. I remember her laughing when I told her she had to check ID before she gave out the free Suicide Girl memberships. Rest Easy Ashley… CLICK ON ANY PICTURE TO BE READ AWAY! OR BETTER YET ... "They're coming to get you Barbara..." It's the ![]() Newsletter Halloween is officially over, but not for everyone. Imagine being Rob Zombie, our cover story for this latest issue. The guy is the embodiment of All Hallows Eve! I’ve been a fan of Zombie since the ’90s when White Zombie hit MTV and brought everything I love about horror flicks and music to life. The band, the music, the videos - everything was authentic and not cheesy like some old ’80s metal video by some lame band like Grim Reaper. As a solo artist he still keeps it creative, and if you were lucky enough to see him almost steal the show from our homeboys KORN back in ’99 at Rabobank, you'd know what I mean - the stage, make-up, and Sheri Moon as a devilish cheerleader. Oh yeah, and the robots ... How can you tour with all that stuff? Yes, I am a pop-culture geek, so getting a chance to interview Rob Zombie was definitely one of my more exciting moments as a journalist. How often do you get to ask Rob Zombie if he was down with Buck Owens? Speaking of Halloween, I'm sure most of you have seen all the “holiday” photos online at: www.bakotopia.com. If you haven't, time to join the thousands who have! This Halloween was another year of naughty gals and guys showing off their bodies - some more than others, mainly due to the fact that they literally had “more” to show. Photos are infectious and provide more than enough entertainment and excitement at the home or office. Who needs Viagra when you got Bakotopia photos? My questions is ... Why wait until Halloween to let your freako flag fly Bako? Do it everyday! Big ups to everyone who participated in our “Campus Buzz” issue! I received many e-mails from students from different campuses who said they felt better knowing they weren’t toughing it out alone. We’ll do it again sometime, promise! This latest issue is full of more of what you love. Thanks to all of our contributors, and don’t forget to support our advertisers! We need them, and they need YOU! I'm still paying back my school loan... It's the ![]() Newsletter 'College Buzz' Edition! My college story is a lengthy one filled with indecision, panic, dropping out, re-entry and ultimately glory (for me at least.) When I graduated from McFarland High School I went straight to the dorms of BC as a music major. I signed up for classes and my parents helped me out with money. That’s where my adventure began, and what a tale it is. Like many of you current students or alumni reading this issue of Bakotopia, making decisions and devising a survival plan is an important part of everyday life. Will I find a parking space today? I forgot my book! I can’t be late for work! Will my financial check show up on time? I’m hungover, I don’t wanna go to class! Yes, these are the trials of life we all must face as students of higher learning. My best memories of college are being a member of every music group on campus - the marching band, jazz band, concert band, steel drum band. If there was an opening, you’d find me in the ranks. After my first two semesters at BC, I ended up changing my major to “undeclared,” graduating with an AA, and transferring to CSUB not knowing what I wanted to do with myself. I continued playing music on campus, and found out they had started a communications program at CSUB. It was a fairly new program, but with the help of one of my mentors, Judith Pratt being one, I finally felt a sense of direction. Music and performing was my first love, but the entertainment business was a close second. I had to figure out a way to bridge the two, and in the process create a career path. I ended up dropping out for about 12 years, but my conscience, parents, professors, and valley fever kept telling me to “Go back and finish your degree, Matt.” So I did. I called my old professors who were more than happy to help me get on track. My buddy Frank Ramirez at CSUB’s financial aid department re-educated me on the current forms, and Priscilla Long, the best school advisor in the world, showed me how to finish in a year and half! It can be that easy, if you take the time to plan accordingly. So, read on my dear students! Do not fear the unknown - just get off you're rear and make your life happen! School is back in session!
