Don't drink and drive....

It's the

NEWSLETTER...'BEST OF  / NEW YEAR'S EVE EDITION'

Well, the end of the year is here!

I can’t believe some of the things we’ve all accomplished!

The beginning of the year saw Bakotopia start growing leaps and bounds - we changed up the Web site, added some new features, 1,000s of new users, and of course .. .the launch of Bakotopia magazine in May!

Well, the magazine you hold in your hands is definitely due to your continued support of what Bakotopia is all about - uplifting life in Bakersfield as we know it.

So many new connections were made at Bakotopia.com this year, it was crazy! Locals discovered they were in the company of people with mutual interests and talents. It was only a matter of time before new bands were formed, art shows were opened, parties were held, and theaters filled!

We also have to give mad props to our advertisers for seeing the value of the Bakotopia print product - they’ve finally found a home to reach their target audience! They keep our pulse alive and we hope it serves them well. Please show them some love by getting a new tat, cellphone, guitar, beer, or lap-dance!

Some of my favorite moments of 2007 include the “water-testing” we conducted. Remember the R.A.T. cover back June? I think we tickled Inga Barks fancy a little too much. What about the Sill Building Sex Bandits video? No, it wasn’t me. And who could forget our live Bako events? I get a mild buzz just thinking about them!

For our last issue of the year, we had to go out with a bang and do a “Best of Bako” 2007 edition. In true Bakotopia fashion, we changed the categories up to suit our audience. We know everyone has a favorite bar, but what about those who make the bar what it is? And on the Web, bloggers made some big noise - why not let their fans vote?

Without getting too blubbery, I do want to express my appreciation to everyone whose contributed with articles, pictures, promo, for the good of Bakotopialand in 2007. Awww hell, I’m gettin’ misty....

Does anyone attend the Bakersfield Business Conference at CSUB in 1989?

If you did, you will remember late Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, who spoke as well as Mikhail Gorbchev, Henry Kissinger, Lech Walesa, and Mike Wallace..

It was pretty amazing. I remember hearing Bhutto speak of a group called the Taliban, and hearing her stories of how they were growing quickly.

Were you there?

Share some stories with us..

NEWSLETTER (36 Chambers)

The cultural exchange of ideas is always a beautiful thing.

Different races and colors, blending like a masterpiece - that’s my hip-hop dreamscape.

A few weeks ago, I was inspired to put together this latest edition of Bakotopia after attending ‘The Movement’ urban art show at The Dome with Rebekka, Tekwiz, and DJ Mikey.

Walking into The Dome's main ballroom, we were greeted by the strong scent of spraypaint - the Krylon variety to be exact. Surrounding the plywood canvases set-up for the “live art” show taking place were groups of multi-ethnic youth gathered together for a common cause - to create and appreciate.

Born on the streets of New York in the ’70s - the music, art, and fashion were all part of one big perfect beat, and its name was hip-hop.

Thirty years later, the culture continues to evolve and further its reach through generations who’ve flocked to its cause - to keep it free.

In this issue, we feature two products from opposite ends of the rap/hip-hop spectrum - the Wu-Tang Clan and Kottonmouth Kings - living proof of just how beautiful musical chaos can be.

Let’s not forget The Natural Movement and The Mixaholics - prime local examples of the effects of the culture’s lasting influence.

To add even more fun to the mix, we have contests for free hip-hop swag at Bakotopia.com to celebrate this edition, tickets to concerts, and two new Bakotunes podcasts!

Thanks to all who voted in the Best of Bako 2007 poll. Stay tuned to our last issue of the year for the winners!

So much to cover with so little time … read and rhyme on peeps …

Props to Chuck Arias for sharing some Wu-history with Bakotopia.
