Happy Anniversary, baby!
It's the...

Newsletter..."Martini's anyone?" Edition
If you know me, or somebody who does, you know I don’t believe in slowing down.
It’s been a great first year of Bakotopia magazine, and I couldn’t be more proud of the great work we’ve accomplished as team - that includes YOU!
Thinking back to the first round of initial cubicle discussions about concepts for the new magazine last year, one idea sticks out the strongest: “Let the reader take the wheel.”
Since our first issue hit streets on May 4, 2007, that’s exactly what we’ve claimed as our strong point - letting the reader drive.
Stopping by my office, you’ll most likely find me on the phone or answering e-mails. I like to be available when I get a question from a community writer or newly registered Bakotopia.com user. No question is too crazy, trust me - I appreciate them all, and no one bugs me.
The whole process of putting a magazine together has been a learning experience, and the talent this city is packed with is overwhelming.
There’s not enough room to list all the great regular contributors who’ve been “driving” the Bakotopiamobile every issue, but I can tell you that they come from all walks of life, most with no journalism background whatsoever.
Musicians, students, actors, artists, and just good local people who want to make our city a happening place. If you’d like to contribute, too, by all means, just start writing!
We’re definitely not resting on our laurels with this issue - there’s always more work to do. Bakotopia has big plans for expansion through 2008, and we add more free racks every week - keeping issues free to the public thanks to our great advertisers who feel Bakotopia readers are the people to reach.
The Bakotopia office creative crew also deserves a round of applause for making each issue eye appealing with cool graphics, and making changes as needed during crunch time. They’re amazing!
So, on that note I hope to see all of you at Chuy’s SW on May 3rd at 5 p.m. for a big THANK YOU bash for all your love and support! Time for a rager!

NEWSLETTER! FESTIVAL OF BEERS EDITION!
Spring in Bakotopialand can only mean one thing - festivals.
Festivals of all kinds: music, food, tattoos, and of course BEER - which brings us to this very special edition of Bakotopia you hold in your hand.
The Active 20/30 Club of Bakersfield and Bakotopia are the perfect match to lift Bakersfield’s coolness factor to heights unknown with the help of our mutual supporters - YOU!
You will notice that Bakotopia Magazine has grown a little bit since last issue, and with good reason. Over the past year Bakotopia.com has fast become the go-to local website, and our magazines continue to fly off racks the minute they hit the street!
I am amazed by how many great contributions flood my mailbox every week - everything from event reminders, story ideas, and full print-ready articles lifted right off our Bakotopia.com blogs.
Inside you’re going to meet a local blogger who has re-defined sexy, more debate on the presidential election, local tattoo stories, controversial topics to boggle your mind, and tips on making your boobies more bountiful.
By the way, have you noticed how generous people in Bakersfield are? Not only is the Festival of Beers a fundraiser for kids in need, but there are tattoo shops and punk rock
aficionados assembling a string of benefit shows for worthy causes. Hats off to you, Bako!
The community effort at Bakotopia continues to work like a well-oiled machine. Our readers make the news happen, and our advertisers make it possible to bring that news to the rest of the city at no cost to the reader!
So enjoy yourselves at this year’s Festival of Beers, and don’t forget your designated driver! Support our Bakotopia advertisers and let’s keep on growing, shall we?

For locals, by locals, BUT OF COURSE!
It's the

Newsletter
I’ve been receiving a lot of e-mails lately from out-of-towners who seem to be amazed by what they read about Bakersfield in Bakotopia magazine.
Everyone from former locals, to our military servicemen and women across the globe fighting the good fight, or just random web surfers - it’s always nice to get a message thanking us for keeping them up to date with what’s happening back home. And not just about events happening in town, they love discovering new places to go when they visit: new restaurants, tattoo shops …
Bako does have a pulse, and it’s about time we get our piece of the national praise pie!
Our city tends to get a bad rap from the critics - most of whom usually pass judgment based on one bad cup of coffee at a local diner during a quick stop off the freeway.
As we know, those critics obviously don’t live in Bako…
This issue is guaranteed to keep Bako critics back in their caves, and give our readers what they came for.
Chase has this week’s cover story with a great interview featuring Zach Lind, drummer for emo rock outfit Jimmy Eat World, and tons more from all of our talented Bakotopia.com users.
For all the book fiends out there, Rubiconreader interviewed author Eric Jerome Dickey; we have information about an upcoming art show to benefit a sister in need; Greg Goodsell is back with another hilarious observational piece that only Greggy can pull off; and a coda to our previous “Bakersfield Sound” issue. We had so many great contributions, we had to make sure they made it into your precious little hands this issue.
As always, THANK YOU to all of our advertisers and everyone who came out on St. Paddy’s Day - what a night we had!
Take that, Bakersfield critics!
