I get lots of e-mails from organizations, politicians and activists everyday, but this one really needs some attention. Our fuel situation is getting out of control...LET'S GET ACTIVE!
6/26/08 from my e-mail in box...More potential bad news for Bakersfield....DAMN!
I'm writing to you as the Chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, and this morning we released a report detailing the top 100 regional and top 50 large airports that will lose service because of increasing fuel costs. Many of these airports may lose service all together.
Bakersfield is on the list.
You can view the rankings and have your community take action at www.savemyairport.com.
Skyrocketing fuel prices have created a serious threat to the viability of the U.S. airline industry - and that threat has serious implications for cities of all sizes that rely on air travel for their own economic well-being, as well as local companies that need air service to do business. Studies indicate that at current fuel prices, one or more major airlines could be liquidated later this year, wiping out all their service to hundreds of cities overnight.
Congress and the Administration must take action to address the fuel crisis in the near term, including, eliminating manipulation of commodities markets; strengthening the U.S. dollar against foreign currencies; and incentivizing producers to increase energy supplies, refining capacity and develop new environmentally responsible aviation fuels. Stabilizing the airline industry by tackling the country's fuel crisis must become a national policy priority.
Please link to www.savemyairport.com -- and let's make sure that Bakersfield doesn't lose air service.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Kevin Mitchell

Nevermind the Bollocks, here's the...

Newsletter...Summertime Blues, NOT! Issue!
Bakotopians have done it again!
Standing by our motto of “letting the reader drive,” this issue is packed with enough coolness to help ease the summertime blues - we mean it when we say, “Not if we can help it!”
If you’re a registered user at Bakotopia.com, I’m sure you’ve become very familiar with my e-blasts keeping you in the loop with events and shout-outs for stories and pics.
This time around, my e-mail box was packed with enough stories for two issues - bravo! And all under a common theme - summer.
Theater reviews, previews, comedy shows, music, reminders of what you missed. Next year, you’d better not miss the Thunder Run - wait ‘til you see the pics!
One of the highlights in this issue is this week’s cover.
Bakotopia readers come from all walks of life, and our cover photographer for this issue is 17-year-old photographer and Frontier High senior Amanda Geis, who contacted me about contributing some art for an upcoming issue. I admired her persistency and professionalism - how could we say no?
So after a couple phone calls about concepts and ideas, she delivered a great shot that summed up life in Bakersfield during the summer months - music, skateboards, and lots of flip flops. If you’ve just graduated from high school or you’re on college break, take a tip from Amanda and get active for the remainder of the summer.
You don’t have to be a photographer, musician, or artist either - events need people, so get off that computer. You’ll save yourself from carpal tunnel syndrome, bad eyesight, and probably save your relationship in the process - no joke!
On the plus side, reading is fundamental. So as you read our precious magazine, rest assured you are feeding your brain safely - the Bakotopia way.
Have a safe and sane Fourth of July - and let freedom ring, baby!

Easy ridin' in 2008...
It's the one and only:
Newsletter...Bakersfield Thunder Run edition!
There’s no disputing the fact that Bakersfield loves bikes.
At Chuy’s or Amigo’s, you’re bound to run into a group of locals who need that escape from the daily grind - be it the office desk, oil field, or school books. Today’s biker has come a long way since the days of “Easy Rider,” or even “The Wild One.”
There’s a biker club for everyone - be it born again, fallen angel, or just hangin’ out. The roar of a Harley coming down your street demands attention, even causing rage among the overly sensitive. Be cool - there’s room for everyone on these streets of Bakersfield.
It was only a matter of time before Bako bikers would be given a place to congregate in one place over one loud, rowdy weekend - The Bakersfield Thunder Run!
Inside you’ll find everything you need to find your way around the grounds of the fest, so keep this issue handy. You don’t want to miss the burnout contest, fashion show, and of course, the bikini contest.
You’ll also meet Japan’s answer to James Dean - “Chica” - on the cover. If you haven’t seen his bikes yet, you’ll easily become one of the thousands of locals who follow his designs closely.
We’re still recovering from the Rockin’ Roots Fest around here, but we got photos up the wazoo! Millionaires almost caused one stage to collapse during their performance of “Alcohol” with about 100 jumping fans who took over the stage. Photographer Joseph Gomez was in the heat of it all and he loved it.
When you think bikers, you can’t deny the image of the leather-clad “outlaw” biker - I’m talking serious moustache and all. Paying homage to the original singing leatherman, Glenn Hughes of the Village People, is writer Greg Goodsell.
Bakotopia is also remembering a lost friend and colleague, writer Chris Page who died suddenly this past May. News of his death shocked the community, but the good memories will live on forever.
I want to send a shout out to all the hard-working dads out there. Take the day off, fall asleep on the couch, or better yet - head out to the Thunder Run!
Happy Father’s Day! Peace to Bo Diddley and Chris Page....RIP

One of the true architects of rock n' roll has passed - Bo Diddley.
Back in 1999, I was also fortunate to see Bo Diddley headline the annual Hootenanny in Irvine. He rocked that place filled with rockabilly heads and pin-up queens and taught them that rock n' roll wasn't a fashion statement, it was a way of life! He moved, grooved, and shook it all over...
Pat Evans from World Records booked Mr. Diddley at CSUB, back in 2005.
Local blogger NL Belardes was there doing some blogging and taking photos.
Bo wasn't his usual moving and grooving self, but once he hit his strings, it was on. The tunes, rhythm, and unmistakable sound was still there. Just watching him onstage, and realizing a living legend was in our presence was more than inspiring. Without Bo, there would be no rock and roll!!
I was revisiting that show today. It was one of the best shows of my band's career. Bo hung out on the side of the stage during our set, jammin to the Latin reggae ska and signed everyone's guitar, poster, or whatever they could get their hands on after his set.
If you'd like to revisit that show, just click on Bo's picture below.

Rock On, BO! Thanks for the music and memories!
