Time in a Bottle (Jim's Hymn): Who do you wish you could have spent more time with?

 Dr BLT's CDiary

1/30/08

I won Bad, Bad Leroy Brown the 45 rpm record for a 50s dress-up contest in my elementary school after dressing up as Elvis.  I wore that record out like a favorite pair of shoes.

Jim waxed poetic and prophetic in the words to Time in a Bottle.  He was also prolific.  He was on this earth for such a short time, but songs like this one, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Operator and I Have to Say I Love You in a Song are 3-4 minute legacies and each are tributes to the man that made little money even as he gave us some of his greatest hits.

Croce, 30, died in a small commercial plane crash on September 20, 1973, one day before his third ABC album, I Got a Name was scheduled to be released.

I miss Jim and his simple, poignant, creative ballads.  It's such a cliche, but none the less true that we really don't appreciate those people we treasure until they're gone.

How about you?  Who do you wish you had more time to spend with?  It could be somebody close, or someone a little more distant, like a recording artist whose songs you treasured.  Either way, share your memories here in the comments section below.

Oh, BTW, I recorded Time in a Bottle (Jim's Hymn: A Tribute to Jim Croce) with local guitarist Todd Christensen on January 28, 2008.  It will be featured on my forthcoming Altar'd Hymns collection.

There really isn't anyone that I wish I could have spent more time with; I've been pretty lucky in that department.

Random would like to spend more time with President George W. Bush, so that he can absorb all of Bush's brilliant decision-making skills, and (Hey! Put that gun down, Random....)

Speaking of Bad, Bad Leroy Brown...

I got to spend a lot of time with my dad before he passed but you know it will never be enough. I wish I could have spent more time watching him dance and play the drums. He and my mom were competition jitter buggers and he was a dance instructor for Aurthur Murray in his younger days. He was a crazy jitter bugger though people used to love to watch them go and he would surely give them a show. He also played the drums mostly at jam sessions but he was in a little country band for a while. The ONLY time I ever saw my dad drink was when he played the drums, he would have a few beers and then start to wail, my sister and I sometimes laugh until it hurts remembering about my dads antics when he played , he made some of the most comical faces.  I miss him.

Baylee, are you familiar with that song, Dance with My Father?  That seems like a song that relates to your memories of your father.  Thanks for sharing them.  I have aging parents and they are down from Canada to visit, so I want to treasure every moment and set lots of time aside to spend with them.

"Id save every day like a treasure and then, Again, I would spend them with you"

My daughters are grown now, and they are wonderful, like most parents I would have liked to have kept them young for a little longer.

Alternately , since my parents were divorced when I was young, I would like to have spent more time with my father when he was a younger man.

It would be best if I was my current age for either of these scenarios, I know I would appreciate them a lot more. The old "if I only knew then what I know now" problem.

I learned long ago that people come and go. So I try to make my time with them count so they know how I feel about them in case I never, or rarely get to see them again.

Sometime before I die, I'd like to see my 7th grade best friend, Bill Spencer. I wanted to name my first son Spencer, but my wife insisted on Todd. But Spence and I got into more trouble and had so much fun doing it. We once were ordered by Sister Hedwinette to stay after school. She went to one side door to let the good kids out, and Spence and I went out the other side door.

The good sister ratted me out to my mother that night. I've always wondered what prison was kindest to Spence.

Thanks, both of you, for sharing your thoughts and insights.  It's so easy to take our loved ones for granted.  I try to remind myself on a daily basis not to do that.

Steve says it best~make that time count folks, especially with those you love the most, the ones we tend to treat a if they will always be there. While I miss both my sons, the chance to make things right with my eldest would be more important to me,than more time with Kelsey. Kelsey knew how much I loved him,the eldest I am not so sure knew that. But it is what it is,this life ,go hug someone today.

Well stated, sagefever.
