BAKERSFIELD SOUNDoff: Isn't it time to forgive Merle Haggard for not living here?

I was sure I came across this issue in Bakersfield writer Shellie Branco's recent, brilliantly executed interview with Merle, but it may have appeared in an expanded edition of the interview as it appears here:

http://people.bakersfield.c...

Bakersfield has certain advantages, but let's face it,

I would think it should be easy to forgive him for this.  What I'm still struggling to forgive him for is this :)

Would you live here if you were Merle?  Doesn't he have the right to live wherever the hell he wants to live?  That's the BAKERSFIELD SOUNDoff question of the day.  I'm waiting for your answer.

In 1996 I attended a benefit concert that Merle gave at North High School for his friend and guitarist Roy Nichols.  He drove all the way home to do this.  I said home.  I think Merle still considers Bakersfield his home, no matter where he sleeps.

P.S. BLT, did you find the pork rinds?

Who cares where he lives.....I have seen him twice and both times were cool.,,,, I missed that benefit concert that Merle did in 1996 but I had a friend that went to it and he said Merle played like for three hours. That would have been cool because now that he's older he doesn't play to long....

Sure he has the right to live anywhere he likes as long as he says "I'm FROM  Bakersfield" and we don't continue to refer to him as our local boy.

People mention that Frank Gifford is FROM Bakersfield too but you don't see him refer to Bakersfield as his home.  (hometown maybe, but not home.  Not to be any more critical that I usually am on this topic, but my daughter said she went to see Merle some years ago and he was so drunk he could barely perform.

None of this takes away from his contribution to country music or the fact that he is a great artist.  Just keepin' it real here folks.

Nancy I saw Hank Williams Jr at mesa merrin ? speedway and he was so drunk that I couldn't make out what songs he was singing. He come out and butchered his songs for about a hour then he walk off stage. It was sad............

Gube...I've heard that about Hank Jr.

Maggie..As to your comment, I just consider the source.

Yeah, Gube, it was a great show despite a few rowdies who just came to make noise (I guess they're everywhere).  Merle finally shut them up by saying, "Wait a minute, wait a minute... I'm still running the show here!"  And unfortunately two of his band members had been detained in St Louis for singing in the airport (I kid you not), so there was no fiddle played that night, and no horn.  Merle came close to saying he'd never pefrorm in Missouri again.  Bonnie Owens was supposed to be there, but couldn' make it because I think she was healing a broken leg, but she had a pretty good stand-in... Rose Maddox.

I'm sure Merle would be grateful for all of your forgiving attitudes.  And yes, WS, I did manage to find those pork rinds, on the same isle as the barbeque beans :)
