I know some of the Simpson Clan...Dean Simpson.. Reds nephew grew up playing guitar and singing to my sister and her friends..He could whip up lyrics off the top of his head and not miss a chord..He had it all..being a Simpson he was a born natural..he hung out with Merle and all of them back in the early days.... When Merle first sang 'Silver Wings' he went to see Dean perform it on stage one night..one of the people with him said "DAM Merle ..he sings it as good or better than you do".. Dean wont ever forget that..it was a highlight in his life to be so honored..In my mind I will forever hear Dean singing..'Gentle on my mind.'. Then he met his wife and she wasnt much into the clubbing scene .I think the girls were lovin this young man with a deep rich country voice a little more than they should ..so he stopped preforming because he loved his new young wife so much.... He's near 60 now and only sings with friends and family..lifes been alittle ruff on Dean ...but those golden vocals are still there..He sang 'Amazing Grace' for my father when he passed away in '02 and there wasnt a dry eye on site..He coulda been one of the greats ..but family was more important back then and still is..infact his son Joe works in advertising for the Bakersfield Californian..last time I heard him sing he was following in his familys foot steps... posted by

Someone sang "Silver Wings" bettern' Merle? Man! I'd like ta hear that! I bought an album in service one time. Almost as a joke. Red Simpson's "hello, I'm a truck!" A little bit a rebellion on my part. Show the bastiges in the billets with their "I Herd it Through the Grapevine" (no, not THAT Grapevine) and all. I turned that ol' LP on and man, it was REALLY good! I don't know I expected but not what I heard! I wuz hooked! The piano work, his voice.......great! Loved it! Wasn't a joke, it was damn good music. Full stop! Had an old Merle Haggard album I found when I was livin in Europe. Had Silvr Wings, Root of My Raisin, a lot of good ol tunes. I wore that sucker out! Bettern' sittin in pubs listening to some old socialist talk about how bad America was. Hell I can get that here! So I stayed at home most nights, workin out petrol pricing and listening to Merle........ That damn Red Simpson was a really great singer and I wish I still had that I'm a Truck album now. Of course it would be a little cumbersone ta play that LP on my bicycle I guess so I might hafta get it on an MP3 or sometin.... ;=) posted by
