BAKERSFIELD SOUNDoff: Trout's or Crystal Palace?: Which venue do you prefer?
This photo I took is not posted here to necessarily represent my preference. I enjoy both and I need you to help me if I'm ever caught in this jam (pun wholly intended): It's a Saturday night. There's a kick-ass country band playing at Trout's and there's one playing over at the Crystal Palace. The gigs start and end at the same time. You're a die-hard Bakersfield Sound fan. Where do you go? It's time to play blog n roll. When I say, blog n roll, you add your comment, and your concommitant perspective in the comments section below. Ready? Set? That's a tough one. I haven't headed over to the Crystal Palace in months. Used to see my cousin (guitarist in Branded Heart) there about every two weeks. Just recently went back to Trout's for a friend's birthday, and was very impressed with the improvements. Maybe a half and half? posted by

Bruce, can I horn in a minute? Thanks. (not that I gave you a choice... heh.) I heard on the news today that the Kern River Belle closed lalst night and will reopen in the old railroad depot on Norris Road under the new name of The Rusty Rail. I had previously heard that the owners of Muggs bought them out and intended to close it. When I asked why, I was told they didn't want the competition. (that part was rumor.) Doesn't make much sense if the old owners were just relocating. The new place should give them more room but I thought someone was using it for a residence. Anything from your front? posted by

Well it depends on my mood, if I want true honky tonk action then I would say it is definitely Trouts, if I want a milder more reserved atmosphere then I would say the Crystal Palace. Both places have great country music and musicians. In 20 to 30 years the Palace will give real honky tonks a run but right now just a little reserved. posted by

Now we're getting somewhere. Great feedback, everybody. Nancy, that's the first I've heard of that, but thanks for bringing that to our attention. Please keep us posted. It's too bad they didn't "buck the system," put up their dukes, and hang in there a little longer under the old name. And BTW, if given the choice between The Crystal Palace and Trout's which would you pick, Nancy? posted by

Thanks, pup, for sharing your memories of Trout's with us, and for missing my blogs. The feeling is mutual.
