If God wore Denim: New song inspired by George Jones autobiography

Welcome to my songwriter series, Lyric today, Hear it Tomorrow.  Today's song was born out of a line from George Jone's autobiography, I Lived to Tell it All with Tom Carter.

Referring to his brother-in-law, W.T. "Dub" Scroggins, whom he called his uncle, Jones, on page two, says, "I looked up to Dub, literally and figuratively, and thought he looked the way God would look if God wore denim."

This reminded me of the Joan Osborne hit, What if God Were One of Us.  It also reminded me of the contrast between what God is probably like, and what his is always portrayed to be in churches across the country.  Lacking any sort of human point of reference, we often find God intimidating and aloof.  Hence, the need to get in touch with God's human side.

This was one of those songs that come to me in an instant:

If God wore Denim

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008

It seems we have a hard time seein' Jesus

but seein' is believin'

and believin' is so freein' to the soul

it seems we have a hard time seein' Jesus

but if he wore denim, I wonder if our eyes

would see the light

chorus:
if God wore denim

would you befriend him

if Jesus were a cowboy

would you follow him

to much greener pastures

and cool, shady valleys

if God wore denim would you let him

take the burden of your heart

it seems we have a hard time seein' Jesus

as anything but somethin' so unaccessible

and out of reach

it seems we have a hard time seein' Jesus

as anything but an old time scholar

born to teach

but...

(chorus)

God wears denim. Nikes, too. He drives a '64 Chevelle with blue metal flake paint and Cragars. He was arrested last week and had to post bond after he was nailed doing 125 mph between L.A. and Vegas.

Well, that explains why I've always felt I was never able to catch up to God :)  They'll probably crucify him for it!

That wasn't God, it was Moe the runaway chimp.

Now you've got me all confused Audrey.  JBS almost made a believer out of me :)
