What Part of "Right-wing" Don't You Understand? Linda Ronstadt's New Attacks on Bush
Back in 1994, Linda Ronstadt was shown the back door of a Las Vegas casino after uttering words of praise for Michael Moore and his movie, Fahrenheit 9/11, the movie was later parodied in this song:FahrenHYPE 9/11words and music by Dr. BLT (c)2006http://www.drblt.net/music/... and then criticized in a DVD of the same title by Dick Morris. Recently she has renewed her campaign against Bush, calling him an "idiot" and defending the Dixie Chicks for their history of publically ridiculing him. The jury is still out on whether or not these two songs and others from my Right-wingers Need Love Too CD are "for real" or whether I'm making fun of conservatives. I just write the stuff. I leave it to the public to decide. I will say that calling anybody an idiot tends to absolve them of responsibility for their actions. I will say that intelligence is a complex phenomenon and that even psychologists like myself, who use intelligence tests have never been able to adequately define or measure intelligence. But right now, I'm more interested in your views. Should pop and rock stars, has-beens and otherwise, who rant publically on political issues be taken seriously? How do you feel about Linda Ronstadt's latest comments on the president? Is Bush an idiot? In the game of BLOG and ROLL, you play and central and "instrumental" role. So let's here what you have to say.

They should be taken as seriously as the next Joe. In other words, we all have opinions, but the ones that count are marked on little ballots. And even IF you voted for Bush, one shouldn't feel like they have to steadfastedly hold onto the wiseness of their choice, if they feel like he hasn't represented them well.

One difference is that even though us bloggers have an easy target in Bush, and the only reprocussions we may suffer by our opinions is a rant by Mucus as to how we are Commies if we don't follow our leader off the end of the Pier, those in the limelight (eg The Dixie Chicks), DO have the right to express their opinion, but the Public has the right not to buy their records if they find their comments distasteful.

There are many factors that can be involved when a public figure makes political statements. It could be they have strong feelings and state them even though they realize this could hurt them, it could be that they didn't understand the  monetary implications when they made the statements, or...it could be that their name hasn't been in the news lately so this is a good way to get it out there. I won't make a judgement on which of those things come into play with Ronstandt.

As a moderate liberal, I KNOW that many of Hollywood's elite talk a good game, as long as it doesn't interfere with their lives. For instance they have a Prius in their garage, but they have 2,000 dollar a month PG&E Bills. It makes regular liberals cringe, especially if the celebrity is unliked in the first place.  But many of the issues they address are real and need to be debated. In the end, I don't think comments by entertainers will sway a 30% approval rate either way. Their opinion weighs no more in the average American's lives than...well...the average American.

She's no good, she's no good, she's no good, she's no good.
Baby she's no good.

I don't see why everyone gets so excited when Linda Ronstadt opens her mouth.  Remember whose arm she used to be on back in the day?  I don't believe she's trying to kick start a dead career by making extreme comments.  I think this is how she feels and sometimes she lets her mouth get ahead of her brain.  It won't kill her career.  It's already on life support as it is.  At this point who cares really?  If the press would let it go, her comments would fade into the sunset with her career.

Well spoken from the former Uranus beauty queen. Sounds like jealousy to me because The Linda  once did the new California Attorney General to be

And how is toilet paper like the Starship Enterprise....they both circle Uranus searching for Klingons!

Sorry. Not only was that an old joke, it is also tasteless. Just like me, old and tasteless!!!!

Joe Scarbrorough recently ran a bottom line scroller  on his show asking "IS BUSH AN IDIOT?"..this from a man that supported Bush's war from the beginning. The Repubes are abandoning ship just like rats..I don't care who voices their opinions..the more the merrrier..time to get the word out every chance possible..Bush is an idiot and has no plan except "stay the course".

Though I disagree with Joe Scarborough on many of my own "hotter" issues, he does deserve full credit for being a free-thinking conservative -- a brand of conservative now considered persona non grata among the GOP's powerbrokers and media parrots.

I'm with you on that hardliner. I may have a difference of opinion with him on some issues, but he is much more tolerable than a Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity,  who seem to wallow in their own self importance. Scarborough seems to slough off criticism with a shrug and make up his own mind about things. It seems like ALL news now is an editorial instead of a factual report.

Bush is not an idiot.

Bush is not an idiot, I agree he is too smart  for that, beside close counts only in horseshoes and hand granades.

Liberal definition of "idiot": Anyone who disagrees with the liberal agenda.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Sep 5, 2006 at 11:28 AM
Not true blognroll. I call an idiot anyone that blindly follows a leader, or can't think for themselves. You can disagree with ***the liberal agenda*** and not be an idiot just like you can agree with it and still be an idiot. You usually aren't this polarizing. Are we having "a case of the mondays" on tuesday?

I don't know if Antiex [posted above] considers himself a liberal, but he doesn't seem to think that Joe Scarborough is an idiot...

Hey Doc, I disagree.  It's true that I think many in the current administration are idiots, because they ignore the facts and base policy on wishes.  If you were to go out and spend money like you'd won the lottery because you believed that there was a good chance you'd win, that would be idiotic because it flies in the face of known fact.

I just threw that in to stir things up a bit.  Sorry if you experienced that as polarizing PP2.  It's not my usual style of interaction, but even in my attempt to be a mediator, I am sometimes guilty of the very thing I am striving to fight against.  I guess that would make me a bit of a hypocrite.  But I swear, I'm only a hypocrite and a divider on Mondays and the occasional Tuesday after a long weekend.  I will go back to the mushy middle first thing Wednesday morning :)

Tom, your point is well taken, but, on the other hand, are idiots really responsible for their actions?  One can't have it both ways.  Either they are idiots, or they are accountable for their actions.
posted by TomW on Sep 5, 2006 at 12:02 PM
Hey Doc, I think it falls under gross negligence.  They are smart enough to know better.  I think the "idiot" label gets used because they don't respond to facts, but grossly negligent or recklessly indifferent would be more accurate terms.

Hey, the good news is that Bush just spent an hour and fifteen minutes scaring the pants off the electorate about the evils of his "War on Terror" , that bad news is that he might be successsful when Foxnews goes positive 24/7 with the message.
Oh well, you deal with it I'm going back under the bed where I will be safe, I think I just saw an Arab looking man go down the street.

Okay, Tom.  At least you've chosen between "idiot, and by definition, not accountable," and "grossly negligent" or "recklessly indifferent," and, by definition, accountable.  I don't necessarily agree, but I can respect that.
