This is Not Merle's Hillary.  Is it the "real Hillary"?  Well, perhaps some may prefer to see it as the distorted side Dick Morris (who has an obvious axe to grind) sees, and the side that Merle (whose only "axe" is his guitar) may not see.   Is Merle blind to Hillary's dark side (or perhaps "bewitched), or is Dick blind to her bright side?  I've seen shades of both sides (very little of the side offered in Merle's song).  Dick...
It's hard to take the side of Heather Mills in the bitter divorce proceedings if one is a big Bealtes fan.  It's hard not to believe that she is to blame Paul McCartney's biggest break-up since the Beatles, as it is hard not to believe that Yoko Ono was directly responsible for the break-up of the Beatles.   But though I'm loath to do so, I have to give her props for the sublime form of sublimation she has recently participated in as a contestant in the TV hit...

3/27/07 Wow, this trip is getting exciting!  I have stored some great memories of the structures that appear right under the cortex.  I love the limbic system, especially the hippocampus and the amydala.  I think of the hippocampus as an old college campus for hippos.  I think of hippos as very spatial creatures.   Phylogenetically speaking, the hippocampus is one of the oldest regions of the brain.  It's positively antediluvian!  Since I view it...
I'm not talking about Desperate Housewives.  I'm talking about satisfied, content women who stayed home to take care of the children, clean the house, wash the dishes, do the laundry.  Is a housewife now a second class citizen?  Were they ever satisfied?  Were they ever content?  Should women who stay home and take care of household responsibilities on a full-time basis feel ashamed?  Are they equal to women who have jobs outside the home?  Are they to be...
It's hard to believe it's been a year since we lost our beloved Buck.  A jukebox could never take his place, but Bucks songs and our memories of Buck are all we have left, so before the day I intend to find a place where I can drop a few quarters in a jukebox and listen to the music of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos.
Those who are fans of his old stuff remember Okie from Muskogee and The Fightin' Side of Me.  There was no ambiguity about him.   He was the voice of the right-winger.  A few years back, he began to show another side.  He began to join the chorus of critics against the war in Iraq, and he began to question the President.  Well, there's no law against either of these things.  And when folks began to question whether or not he'd lost his fightin' side, I came...
It's hard for me to remember dates, days and months now, and it's a real pain trying to look them up, so I've abandoned dates on my diary, at least until my meds kick in.  I'm really afraid of how these meds are going to make me feel, but I keep that to myself. Today my wife, Cecelia, took me to the doctor for a follow-up visit, and he prescribed me some medication. We discussed the five most common prescription drugs currently are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug...
I have more questions than answers today, and my questions have to do with faith, and, more specifically, Jesus. Do you believe that Jesus is a personal Jesus that you can actually talk with on a daily basis?  Do you believe that Jesus is the son of the living God?  Do you believe he was simply a great teacher or philosopher?  Do you believe in a historical Jesus?  Have you heard Johnny Cash's cover of the Depeche Mode classic?  Which one do you prefer?...

A few days before St. Patrick's Day I haven't entered a word in my diary for days---perhaps weeks.  I'm beginning to lose track of time.  The reason it has taken me so long to put forth an entry is because I've been forgetting when I put my diary, and I've very bad days when my mind was not sharp or clear.  Today is a very clear day, and I have no explanation for that, but I'm going to take advantage of my sharp mind and make an entry.  I'm applying logic to my...

3/13/07 Dear Diary: I'm enjoying my new private practice work here in Bakersfield, California.  Today I saw two new patients: Donald Doyle and Rodney Redburn.  Donald Doyle has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease by his family practitioner, and Rodney Redburn is having a few identity issues. He is not shy about his drug issues either.  I believe he's a dual diagnosis case.  I made sure he understood that I require him to be in some sort of additional drug...
Note to the reader from the author: This is merely psychoeducational Freudian fiction, so please don't freak! Dear Diary: Well, all of these drunken binges have been sort of sapping my energy, so I had a little white crunch for breakfast this morning.  Of course knowing how aggressive that amp can be on the old tooth enamel and gums, I brushed a little more intensely with my electric tooth brush.  I've been playing Boston music all night, in honor of Brad Delp, lead singer of the...

Though it is a highly complex phenomenon, http://neuro-conservative.b... recent studies seem to demonstrate a clear role of genetics in determining a person's political predilections.  Just suppose we juxtapose the terms genetics and politics.  Then just suppose we juxtapose the terms nature and nurture.  My guess is that the joint juxtaposition will make for some great debate.  The rules of my game (sport, art) of...
Mel Tillis wrote it.  Kenny Rogers made a big hit out of it.  Now, as a tribute to Mel Tillis, and as a way of honoring all of the injured veterans and the ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice  (especially the ones from Bakersfield), I've released it again as a cover.  I hope you like it.  And while you're listening, why not make it a blog n roll experience, by considering this blog n roll question:  Can folks be both anti-war and pro-troops?  Are people...
For those of you charting my humble musical path, the song Merle Hasn't Lost His Fightin' Side jumped over about 1200 songs this week on this chart, http://www.neilyoung.com/lw... to hit #243.  Yes, it's still a long way to #1, but with a little help from my friends in the Bakersfield blogosphere, I think I can make it. This is the same chart where my bittersweet "tribute" to Neil Young, (Neil Young (Have You Forgotten), hit #1 back in July of...
