Upon visiting the Cake website recently, I noted that Cake had recorded a cover of the same tune I recently recorded a cover of: Mel Tillis's Ruby (Don't Take Your Love to Town), made a huge hit in the 70s by Kenny Rogers.
I am curious to know whose cover of this classic you, the visitors at Bakersfield.com, prefer:
When you go to Cake's website, linked here, their cover tune will automatically play:

Now, here is my cover of the same song.
Pretend that Cake...
It's easy if you try. Or is it? Is there a place for Teletubbies in heaven? How about on earth? How about on your television set? Do you want your children, if you have children, watching Teletubbies? Why or why not? Would Teletubbies and televangelists be able to co-exist in heaven? Now that's one hell of a question, but I think it deserves an honest answer, as do the others.
If not, why not? If so, and you couldn't call it Jerry Falwell Day, what would you call it?
PS: It's disrespectful to mock the dead. Comments mocking Falwell, while probably not headed for deletion, are hereby strongly discouraged.
Now's your time to make the commitment. Don't wait until after the election. Make your pledge today. Your country is counting on you.
There were two back-to-back Sacramento performances, both held on the corner of 19th and J in Sacramento. The first was on May 27, and the second was a Memorial Day performance, held May 28, 2007. These were early morning gigs, scheduled from 7-9 am.
The reception wasn't very warm at first. It was freezing cold in Sacramento on the morning of May 27, 2007. It was overcast, and the winds felt like they came directly from the North Pole in the middle of winter. ...
Peace of mind trumps number of blog hits and making music trumps the blog floggings!
I've been soooooooooooooooo much happier since I've avoided sites loaded with land mines and hatemongers. I've been soooooooooo much happier since I've not brought up or contributed to any controversial topics. I've been sooooooooooo much happier since I've avoided subjects like religion or politics.
Music has the potential to unite people of desperate beliefs. Yet those intent on being...
They came on like an electrical storm that lit up the minds and gripped the hearts of scores of teens in the 60s. I'm talking about the Doors. I was still in first grade when they came onto the scene, but between 1967 and 1971, the Doors, featuring frontman and hormone-fueled hedonist, Jim Morrison.
Curiously enough, most of their six albums have been purchased, not by original fans, but by today's youth, eager to open the...
Memorial Day isn't the only cause for celebration these days. For many Beatles fans, and for fans of popular music in general, we are approaching the 40th anniversary of what many a critic regards as the quintessential Beatles record: Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Believe it or not, Ringo Star won't be among those celebrating the anniversary of its release. He has openly revealed that he isn't such a big fan of the album.
He prefers...
This might sound a little fishy, but the rumors are true. I have met Sir Paul McCartney and I have met John Lennon. Since meeting them, they inspire me even more.
In fact, I'd recommend that everybody keep a couple of pet fish in an aquarium in their office, and that they name them after their favorite artists or songwriters. My fish, Sir Paul McCartney (the gold one, representing the bright side of the Beatles) and bhe black one, John Lennon (representing...
The long weekend is coming up, and rumor has it I'll be performing at the site of my MTV music video cameo (shown above). That's your cue for those few die-hard fans willing to travel for several hours to find me. Performances are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday morning from 9-11 am. See you there, or not. In any case, Dr BLT's Takin' it To the Streets of Bakersfield Starbucks Street Musician Tour '07 will continue every morning at the same time and same...
If you can, then you are a genius's genius. This, my friends is local blues artist, Jerry Rothberg, whose band just got back from playing at BB King's Blues Club in Universal City. He found an outlet right in Starbucks and slid the chord under the door so he could add some killer lead guitar licks to some original Dr BLT songs, along with some Beatles classics. This mystery guest, no longer a mystery, will periodically be featured on my Takin' it to the Streets of Bakersfield...
Due to popular demand, I'll be held over until at least Sunday at the present location. This is a mystery tour, but hints like this are provided. You'll know where I'm at if you scroll back to my first tour announcement and listen to the song, Stuck at Starbucks. The show today starts at around 7 am and will end around 9 am. That's 2 hours of original material and Beatles, Stones and other classic and modern rock and folk classics covers.
Me and my guitar...
This is your personal invitation to my free gig this morning, May 19, 2007. Here's your clue for the day on where to find me: I'll be west of K-Mart and East of Jewetta. I'll be somewhere between a place to eat unauthentic Mexican food and a place that serves latte and no beer.
I'll performing some brand new tunes and some classic Dr BLTunes. I'll also be performing some Beatles, Stones, and Johnny Cash covers.
The show is free of charge. It begins at 7:15...
My Musical Journey: Entry 3:
To kick off my Starbucks Early Morning Sizzling Spring and Summer '07 Street Musician Tour, It's a mystery tour. I will perform at an undisclosed Bakersfield location near, around, or at Starbucks. These are early morning, el fresco, single-set performances featuring original Dr BLT songs and cover tunes from the 60s, 70s and now. It's free of charge.
I'm doing this as a way to pay tribute to street musicians everywhere.
These...
My Musical Journey: Entry 2:
Hey all of you classic and modern rock fans out there. I was wondering if you could offer me some advice on this cover of Born to be Wild, a song I recently recorded as a tribute to Steppenwolf.
The preliminary feedback I've received so far is that the hard-edged psychedelic guitar doesn't go with the laid-back, acoustic style I've introduced in my reinterpretation of the song. Does the guitar work "work" for you? Or does the song...
My Musical Journey: Entry One:
Welcome to entry one of a brand new series, My Musical Journey.
I could wake up one day and write a modern rock song, and the next, a country gospel song like this one, Stranded. There are many sides of the musical side of me, and many influences. My gospel influences are many, but the most profound influences have been Andrae Crouch, Johnny Cash, and The Blackwood Brothers.
My dad was a Blackwood Brothers fan, and he introduced me to this...
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, EPH 6:12.
So, how is the surge going? Well, it depends on who you are talking to. Some would say great, an obvious lie. Some would say its a disaster, for the most part, a true statement, but the statement should be qualified, noting exceptions. Others would say as well as expected, given...
You see many soccer moms with smiles on their faces and an SUV filled with little kids. But are they the picture of happiness? Does the big house, the picket fence and the politically correct number of children symbolize happiness for mothers?
If renown psychologist, and conflict theorist Abraham Maslow is correct in his paper A Theory of Human Motivation, physiological needs are ascendant. If the mother cannot provide for her child's basic physical needs, she...
By raising the question, and by raising the issue, I'm not attempting to render illegitimate any anger towards any given president, based on the character and actions of that president. And I'm not suggesting that one cannot have legitimate beefs against a given president.
Projection is a defense mechanism. It is employed in the service of the ego---not the ego spoken of as in "That guy sure has a big ego," but in the sense spoken of by renown psychological...
