If you think the Bakersfield Sound is dead and gone, think again. Artists like Kama Ruby, who recently did a brilliant remake of The Door's Light My Fire is featured in her first BSU interview, are standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before, and she's paving her own road.
She's got her own "Korner" at BSU now, a series where you can follow and trace her career, just like Penny Marie and her own Lane---Penny Lane, Rockwell has his own...
He's a local community leader, music industry mogul, and owner of Rockwell's Trout's Nightclub and Blackboard Stages, the last Bakersfield Sound honky tonk, and you may have heard him singing with the house band, and with other Bakersfield sound pioneers at Trout's, but, believe it or not, until less than a couple of weeks ago, he had never participated in a recording session, and he had never been on the radio.
Within two weeks, Rockwell has joined me in the original Dr BLT duet, White...
Welcome to Bakersfield sound Trivia Quest. I'm Dr. BLT and I'll be your host. If you can guess which of these guys is the man identified in my brand new song as Darkstar Dan, you'll be announced the winner.
Actually, "Darkstar Dan" is the nickname I gave to Dan Robertson, who used to work at KUZZ during the rise of the first wave of Bakersfield sound, the one that brought us Buck, Merle, Ferlin Husky, Sonny Langley, Red Simpson, Don Rich and...
Just put the finishing touches on the song in the BuckarooM. The song is officially released at:

Check out the lyrics at:

Listen to a sample right here, right now.
Get well soon, Merle Haggard!
Has Arnold become the Terminator of state employee salaries? Three furloughs days have been ordered with leaks from supposed reliable sources that he's considering a 4th and an addition 5 percent across-the-board cut. It seems as if he won't be satisfied until state employees begin foreclosing on their homes, if that hasn't already begun to happen.
The word is out that the legislators in Sacramento are close to hammering out a budget. One question among others, is...
All the paper work is complete. The mix is nearly complete, with possible additional backup vocals to be added (to the ones done by Kim McAbee and Jerry Rothberg) by BakersfieldSounDiva, Theresa Spanke. The song is set for release and the anticipation is growing. It will be released on the indie label, Nu Bako Sound Recordings on 8/10/09 at the record store accessed by the "music" link at:
http://www.drblt.net
Stay tuned for more on the development of this...
Nope, everybody who knows me knows that I've been staying clear of politcial matters and staying focused on my music (along with promoting the music of other promising Bakersfield-sound-grounded artists). The song White Lies about White Guys was not written about Sotomayor, but I am curious about this: How many think the shoe fits?

At BSU, we're studying the life of Merle Haggard, beginning in childhood. For the research, and the remix of Boy Behind Bars (Portrait of Merle Haggard as a Young Delinquent), visit:

I found them after several years. They've never been published, until today. You'll also find a rare photo I took of Clint Black at the first performance following the Buck-Owens-funeral-related temporary closing of the Crystal Palace.
These photos celebrate beloved members of our Bakersfield sound extended family. You'll also find a flashback link to a story I wrote about that heart-warming Clint Black performance. Where?
BSU, of course....
Just in case any of you were beginning to think that the Bakersfield sound was dead and gone, or a thing of the past, something new is happening that builds on the great foundation our Bakersfield sound artists laid down in days of yore.
You'll find the latest at BSU:

It isn't as easy as it seems having too many original songs on your hands. You've got to record as many as you can, and you've farm as many of them out as you can, or they end up sitting on a shelf collecting dust.
I wrote "Ain't I Buck Enough" this morning, and now I'm putting on my talent scout hat in search of a local puckountry, bakobilly, or cowpunk band to record it. Once you've covered it, I'll go out and pitch it, or, as they say, pimp it for...
Do you want to break down a few stereotypes of white males? Well, this is as good a place to do it as any. And if you want to follow the making of a future hit song of mine, from beginning 'till end, a song I call White Lies about White Guys, you can do that too, but for that, you'll have to go underground:

You get a Bucknik. Buckniks are a group that predate the hippies, whose members embrace groups like The Seeds and Jefferson Airplane, and Buck Owens at the same time. There are those that were there when the Beatnik scene was happening in the late fifties and early to mid sixties, around the same time the Bakersfield sound was emerging, and there are those from younger generations who connect with those scenes in a retro sort of way. These are the...
Welcome to another round of Bakersfield Sound Trivia Quest. Here is today's Bakersfield Sound Trivia Quest question (don't allow the photo to throw you off, it could be a clue, or it could be a diversion):
After hearing The Buck Stops Here, a song Jim Shaw played him off a cassette tape that came from me in Sacramento in the late 90s, Buck Owens is quoted as saying this about me and my song:
a. "He'll never amount to anything."
b. "Get that boy down here,...
Can you tell me the name of this band? Can you tell me where these members of our Bakersfield sound extended family come from? How great a fund of knowledge do you have as it concerns members of our extended family who have their roots firmly planted in the very sound we (Bakersfield residents) so often take for granted? If your fund is marked by a plethora, not a paucity, demonstrate it right here, right now, or at the place where us Bakersfield-sound-grounded...
Is there any meaningful way that Michael Jackson and Merle Haggard can be discussed within the same sentence or within the same paragraph(s). To find out, and gain psychological perspective at the same time, you'll have to go underground:
Bakersfield Sound Underground (BSU)
http://www.bakersfieldsound...
Then again, if you ain't going underground, you ain't goin' anywhere.
You guessed it. Punk meets Kern County Country Rock (K.c.c.r.o.c.k). And if you're wondering what this series is all about, I cut this from BSU for your convenience:
Welcome to a brand new Bakersfield Sound Underground blog storybook adventure, where you, the blog visitor, get to add to every episode. You can make it turn out bad, good, neutral, or any old way you'd like the story to turn out. This series is called Jerry's Trout Pizza. This...
No pun intended in the first word of the title by the way, BSU doesn't discriminate for any reason at all. All puns aside, Kern County country star, Monty Byrom, may not have had it as his intended purpose, but he did help me to realize, once and for all, that Billie Jean would work as a country song.
He did that without even speaking a word. How did he manage to do that? Well, you'll simply have to go underground to find out, Bakersfield Sound Underground (BSU) that...
Will Penny Marie join the other two Bakersfield SounDivas (Kim and Theresa) on the newly countrified cover of Billie Jean, the Bakersfield Sound's response to the death of Michael Jackson? You'll have to wait to find out.
I feel honored and humbled as I stood on sacred Bakersfield sound ground. I was among the first to hear what will be a professional recording of the song as I sat in on the session pictured here as an invited guest. All I know is that Penny...
They're lining up, one by one, to record the Bakersfield Sound's (classic and nu bako sound's) response to the loss of the King of Pop. If you haven't heard, that response is in the form of a country cover of Billie Jean.
With the divas on harmony, Jerry Rothberg doing some vocal backup of his own, Reggie Langendorfer on lead guitar and bass, Pat Frase on drums and yours truly on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, arranged by yours truly and penned by...
As the pirated copy of an as-yet-unedited sample of Dr BLT's country version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean begins to spread across the blogosphere, the comments are beginning to come in. Here are a few. Add your own in the comments section below.
"It's F*&in' great!"
"I would by Dr BLT's country cover before I would buy Michael Jackson's original version"
"I loved the song."
"It is...
What would prompt a "Palace Princess" to leave the balance, and head underground to record a country version of the King of Pop's Billie Jean? Well, the "princess," Kim McAbee herself, may be asking herself the same question.
When I asked her to sing harmony on my quirky K.c.c.r.c.o.c.k. (Kern County country rock cover of Billie Jean, she graciously headed to the scene of the crime rhyme, and jumped right into the mix.
The sample I prepared...
