Bakersfield:Life the way it should be. What moron came up with that phrase?
Obviously not anybody who ever needed assistance on a motorcycle. (And Mark I really don't want to get into a Harley vs BMW debate here.) The point is that in the last 6 months my bike has had mechanical failures in Bakersfield and I have had to dissasembele, repair and or push my way back to the appropriate place. Did one single person stop to help or ask if I was ok? In both instances not a soul.,
Compare this to the last two days I spent in the Irish Hills and the Coast shooting photography for Friction Zone magazine. I would barely pull over to set up a shot and bikers and cars would be pulling over asking to help. In Bako....no way...I am going to say it out loud and probably get blasted for it. There is something seriously wrong with this town!!!! Let's get it together people. Oh yeah and special thanks to you semi drivers who almost ran me over today!!! 43 comments from 16 users

Cameron..When you told Mark you didn't want to get into a debate over bikes it took me back a ways. When he was 15 he broke his femur at the Tehachapi Prison Grand Prix while riding a Yamaha. When he got to the hospital the nurse who took care of him was the mother of one of the other motorcycle racing teens in town. She told Mark.."See, if you'd been riding a Honda that wouldn't have happened." I don't think his sense of humor was intact at the time so she gave him a shot of demerol and sent him down the hill to Bakersfield. Heh..I never forgot that. posted by

Nancy, let me school you. If a person is sentenced to FORMAL probation, in most circumstances, they can't leave. But if they receive COURT probation, there are no restrictions on staying here. Don't reply unless you know what the facts are. It makes a person seem dumb.

Heh...Obviously you have no clue what I do or who I work with. It might be best if YOU didn't reply until you know all the facts about me. That's got to be one of the funniest attempts to insult me that i've seen on here. Any particular reason why you felt the need to be hostile? posted by

Nancy, the last Anon post at 9:26 was not me. I wrote the one regarding probation. I did not mean to insult you. Regardless of who you worked for, or who you are, what I said was correct. Formal probation and court probationa are two different things. Anything about "you" has nothing to do with the facts.

So, you hate Bakersfield, huh? Well, if not for it being where my family and friends are, it would not be my first choice either, but it's really not that bad a place. I, personally have no desire to live in a small town. I did that for 30+ years and it got old quickly. I have no desire to live in an isolated state such as Montana(pretty for vacations though). I also have no desire to live in a city any bigger than this. I like to be able to get what I want when I want it. I also like the proximity of EVERYTHING to Bakersfield. Two or three hours in any direction but up the valley will take you to a multitude of different climates and scenery. As far as people pulling over to assist stranded motorists(no matter if its a car or a bike)that happens all over. I once sat alongside Hiway 12 between Rio Vista and I-5 for SIX hours in a Ranchero and not one person ever stopped(and this was before cell phones!)until a CHP finally took me to a phone. I sat along hwy. 97 in Oregon for a couple of hours near a town call Shanicko without anyone stopping. I had walked back to the town(about two miles) and called a tow truck, walked back and sat there. Nobody offered me a ride or pulled over. It was probably the California plates up there. I think that today, many people assume you have used your cell phone to call for help, and for we bike riders, well, many, many people still have hangups about riders. They wouldn't know the differenc between a Harley and Beemer to save their lives, they just don't like bikers. I don't pull over everytime I see someone along the freeway, but if I see someone in obvious need of help I will, and if I am on some backroad, I almost always do. I stopped this past saturday on Glenville road for a car stopped and the driver waving her hand at us. When we turned around, we found she had simply pulled over to take some photos and was just waving at us..:o) As far as a Harley-BMW debate, I can tell you that it is a fallacy that all Harley riders look out for each other. It doesn't really matter what the bike is, it matters who is riding it! So annon..tell me, what is the difference between the probations of which you speak. A court ordered probation seems pretty formal to me. Hmm..Now you have me thinking. Other than Mom working with folks on probation for a living, I think I'll ask a friend I have who is actually a probation officer. posted by

Annonymous.....What you didn't explain was your apparent need to be snotty. Unprovoked hostility isn't necessary to make a point. Nor is it necessary when someone makes a small attempt at humor. It seems you're looking for a monologue..not a discussion. Thanks everyone else..it was fun. posted by

See, I have a name but!!, now you have taught me the way, I'll hide behind the computer and talk crap just like you. OHHHHHH ,,,,,,,,,,,,Think You,,,, for teaching me the way, wouldn't you like to know who I really am, a comment means so much more when people know which one you are, other than snot slung on the wall. anonymous cockroach # 2 posted by

Moto, why do you call me an A-hole? Is it because I know what I am talking about, and you try to distract that fact with your blubbering? I just looked at you profile, and even you don't have your real name listed. Is that because YOU are afraid of telling people who you really are? Perhaps you don't want your probation officer to revoke your probation and send you back to jail. And FYI, you say "your a class one a-hole." The correct way to say that is "you're a class one a-hole". Do you even know the difference between "their" and "there"? Anon-cockroach posted by

One final comment and then I'll bow out. People who hide don't usually put their picture on their blog, nor do they tell the entire blogging world who they work for, what they ride, the area they live in or post articles about their grandson's football career along with his wife and daughters pictures and names..oh..and infant grandsons pictures. (I forgot..he even stuck mine in there.) And that's not even taking the Bakersfield Californian's TV commercial into account. Motopoet is about as hidden as a billboard. posted by

Dexter..thanks for mentioning that you saw it. I didn't think anyone did. It's been on for a week and I still haven't seen it. I have two profiles too. I ended up with that when the new format came into being and somehow it picked up an old one that has my actual picture on it too. I don't hide who I am to anyone who really wants to know. One could have just read the article in the paper a while back. It told everything except my passion for popcorn. For the curious, nosy, or interested.... it's under Nancyg...I think. posted by

well I'm a biker from bakersfield, in fact.... LOL, from the China Grade Loop area in oildale. I've traveled the world and just returned from active civil service status with the Dept of defense. i grew up here, wingland elem. standard jr high and grad from north high in the mid 1990's. i never leave oildale, i don't have too... it has all i need! oh and for the record, i have never used any illegal narcotics, nor do i drink and i have ALL of my teeth. I have a blue collered shirt on and i make about 90K annual before my veterans checks. there are good people everywhere, and bakersfield (in parts) is no different.
