"[bush] can't help it... he was born with a silver foot in his mouth." ann richards, rip
george w. bush: "he ain't no texan," said my houston-born friend, as well as others in austin. "he was born in CONNECTICUT. any real texans'll tell ya that. he AIN'T one-a US, and he never WILL BE!!"
... i hope being beaten in the texas gubernatorial race by "shrub" years back had no bearing at all on ex-governor ann richard's recent death. below is lone-star-state-sized satire from the bright and able richards, who, when she took office as first female texas governor, had shirts made up reading, "a woman's place is in the dome."

Ann Richards on How to Be a Good Republican:

1. You have to believe that the nation's current 8-year prosperity was due to the work of Ronald Reagan and George Bush, but yesterday's gasoline prices are all Clinton's fault.
2. You have to believe that those privileged from birth achieve success all on their own.
3. You have to be against all government programs, but expect Social Security checks on time.
4. You have to believe that AIDS victims deserve their disease, but smokers with lung cancer and overweight individuals with heart disease don't deserve theirs.
5. You have to appreciate the power rush that comes with sporting a gun.
6. You have to believe...everything Rush Limbaugh says.
7. You have to believe that the agricultural, restaurant, housing and hotel industries can survive without immigrant labor.
8. You have to believe God hates homosexuality, but loves the death penalty.
9. You have to believe society is color-blind and growing up black in America doesn't diminish your opportunities, but you still won't vote for Alan Keyes.
10. You have to believe that pollution is OK as long as it makes a profit.
11. You have to believe in prayer in schools, as long as you don't pray to Allah or Buddha.
12. You have to believe Newt Gingrich and Henry Hyde were really faithful husbands.
13. You have to believe speaking a few Spanish phrases makes you instantly popular in the barrio.
14. You have to believe that only your own teenagers are still virgins.
15. You have to be against government interference in business, until your oil company, corporation or Savings and Loan is about to go broke and you beg for a government bail out.
16. You love Jesus and Jesus loves you and, by the way, Jesus shares your hatred for AIDS victims, homosexuals, and President Clinton.
17. You have to believe government has nothing to do with providing police protection, national defense, and building roads.
18. You have to believe a poor, minority student with a disciplinary history and failing grades will be admitted into an elite private school with a $1,000 voucher.

That's classic. LOL . I'm just glad he doesn't claim he's a Bakersfield native from the one year he lived here.

I always liked Ann Richards and respected her forthrightness.  I didn't know she passed away until I read this post.  I looked it up to be sure and was surprised to read she battled alcoholism too.  Tough lady.  And very courageous it seems.

19.  If you're a public employee, you must bash unions on a daily basis, but gladly rake in the benefits the union provides and expect your whomper pension checks on time.
20.  If you're a public retiree, you must expect that your taxpayer-funded pension be kept solvent while you call for the privatization or the outright abolition of Social Security.

She was a hell of a lady.  I'd say heck, but she'd probably get up and smack me for it.  Love you, Ann.  RIP

I don't know hardliner. I'm a Public employee and I've received one 3% raise since 1998.

I'm a Public employee who will soon be paying for his own retirement.

Most of the waste is in the way funds are spent, not on what is given to employees.

A professional can make much more money in the private sector. A pharmacist can make more money part time at Longs than full time for the county.

There is a place for Unions, but if you are in a category where there are few employees, they could care less.

It's all about the money for the employer, employee, and the Union.

This is how the county Union operates. They promise the long time employees a 3% at 60 retirement, which is good, if we get no raises. Meanwhile new employees help pay for that by contributing into their health and retirement funds. Now with new negotiations coming up, they promise a fat raise, but under their breath say that all the long term employees will now also have to pay into retjirement. So now they will probably offer a whopping 10% raise, but then take out 8% for retirement contributions, which will effectively give us a 2% raise over two years. That is if they actually negotiate on time, which they won't, and it will take three years instead of two to get that 0.67% a year raise.

And now the County is crying because they can't get good new employees. Duhhhhh.

And I always thought the county (and state, etc.) couldn't get good employees because they wouldn't interview good employees.  Only once during my time out of work was I even spoken to by a government employer.  And, of course, I wasn't hired.
.
(Heh, heh, that isn't to imply that you aren't a good employee.  It's just a shot at their hiring methods.)

HL, Not being able to hire good people is only the beginning of the County's problems. Anon has it all exactly right. Add to that the County has no advantage for negotiating quickly, the County is looking at losing more employees to the City and private industry before it can even start making things attrative for new employees.

Oh, and by the way, retirements were always paid for by the employees. It was "paid" for by the County in exchange for not receiving (take-home) pay increases. The rate of return for retirement pay-ins is less than that of 401k's, because government employee plans are all managed to prevent market crashes from hitting the funds too hard. Of course, that didn't prevent San Diego from trying it out....
