A (free) day of culture in Bakersfield
If you keep your eyes out around town, you are bound to find lots to do that doesn't cost anything. This was the case for me on Saturday.

I had heard about a belly dancing studio downtown, so I e-mailed one of the dancers asking about beginning classes. Surprisingly, they were hosting a free two-hour workshop and sent me an invitation! So at noon Saturday, I found myself in a room with about 40 women of all ages, shapes and sizes learning undulations and snake arms at Bahiyya Almas. I was awful. But it was so much fun! I may have to try some classes when I am able to afford it.

After that, I went with some friends to CSUB for a Native American Gathering. There was no admission, although I did buy some ice cold water. It was HOT out there! We got there just in time to hear some drumming and singing. I probably could have bargained with some of the vendors who were just trying to reach their goals before packing up and heading out. But I talked myself out of the beautiful basketry and jewelry for sale.

Lastly, we swung south to visit a friend's "farm." He was out of town and his tomatoes needed to get eaten, or go rotten. I ended up with several pounds of tomatoes and made a delicious tomato salad for dinner. Tonight I'll be making spaghetti sauce to freeze with the rest.

On our way home we drove through Sonic for a fresh fruit ice drink. Thanks to my friend who drove, thus saving me gas money, my total spent on this full day of cultural fun was $3. And it was a great day.

If you'd hit Sonic on a weekday afternoon (3-5), you could've both gotten your drinks half-price, or essentially buy-one-get-one-free.  Think Cheap!

I think it would be great if everyone contributed to a blog during the week as to what's happening around town on the cheap or free.  My grandkids and I went to an art gallery in East Hills a few months ago where they were having a free show.  Along with free appetizers and wine.  I forget to check the paper to see the list but I believe it's still there.  Some things don't make the paper though.

You have to search through all the items a little bit, but you can find a TON of events going on in Bakersfield at www.bakersfield.com/yourwords. You'll have to click on "view article categories" at the bottom of the page and then choose "Events."

Also, you can find a lot of things to go and do at Bakersfield.com's Go & Do page, www.bakersfield.com/calendar/go_do. For example, the top story there right now is the giant book sale at Beale Library this weekend. It looks like they're going to have a lot of great deals.

My husband and I have been taking short walks around the downtown area recently.  There's lots of free art for viewing in the form of wall murals and sculptures.  From Truxtun Ave. to 21st St. and H St. to K St. -- there are lots of wall murals and some sculptures.  Then go to the B of A blding. on Truxtun and Chester and you'll find there is a Sculpture Garden, complete with a water sculpture.  Be sure to notice the Lamplighter on the corner of Chester and 17th, as well as the puppy paws painted on the sidewalk!  Next go and admire the sculptured horses and water fountain at the convention center.  Be sure to notice the mosaic mural over the entrance to the auditorium.  Also take in the Amtrak station -- the architectural art is unique.  The globe floating on water is another unique feature of the station.

On another day, we drove out Truxtun extention to the water storage tank by Lake Truxtun.  We walked along the bike trail and took photos of the mural that's painted all around the storage tank.

I'm sure there are other art treasures that we haven't yet discovered.  Does anyone have others to add?

I know the newsroom at The Californian has been working on an interactive map of downtown murals. I'll let you know when it's posted online.
