Her first American meal
My wife SMSd me today.  She was telling me about her very first meal in America.  For breakfast she had cookies and coffee. For lunch she had a burger.  She misses the usual Filipino meal of 'dinengdeng' - vegetable stew.  She went shopping, too.

Alvin,

A friend of mine from India came to work in the U.S. about three years ago.  He knew hamburgers,  but thought they were made with ham.  He ordered "beefburgers" for  every meal for several weeks.  He also ate bread and jam sandwiches at home.

I guess so...burger for lunch and cookies for breakfast aren't typical meals for most Filipinos.  I promised her to bring some veggies and herbs from my brother-in-law's backyard garden in Hawaii - the Filipino stuff that is usually put in the traditional Filipino dishes.  And when we get to Bakersfield in a couple of weeks, I'm afraid  we might have the same meal.  And you're right - it's not healthy at all.

Digitalchain...you CANNOT bring any food into California. So leave it at home.

May I ask why we can't bring in food to CA?

What kind of food are you talking about JustAThought? I've brought all sorts of things from Nevada. Nothing illegal of course.

There's Ralene's, a turo-turo place on Oak St., and Magat Asian Grocery on California is Pinoy too.  There's a smaller market that also serves as our local LBC agent, but the name escapes me right now.  There are a handful of Chinese/Vietnamese groceries, and Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese restaurants as well.

Also, tell her to check out the Saturday morning farmer's market on F Street near Golden State Hwy., in the Golden State Mall parking lot--there is a stand run by a Hmong family that sells lots of Asian and Southeast Asian vegetables.

Of course, we won't bring in anything illegal.  It's the usual backyard variety vegetable grown by pinoys (Filipino) in many parts of the USA.

Since Jason mentioned that there's RALENE'S and the farmer's market getting hold of pinoy dishes won't be a problem.  Thanks for the tip!

Go to the California Department of Agriculture wesite for information on what is legally allowed to be brought into the state.

Delano, a town about 25 minutes north of Bakersfield has a large Filipino community Alvin.

They have a Festival (July?) every year with all the usual Filipino cuisine.

JustAThought - I understand your concern about agricultural pests. Thanks for the information.

The only foods that cannot be brought into california without proper inspection are fruits and vegetables and that is due to the possibility of insect infestation. This all reminds me of the old joke about the two Russian diplomats who finally got their chance to come to America. They had heard so much about the place and it's foods, especially "Hot Dogs". When they got into the terminal at JFK they sought out a Hot Dog vendor and each ordered one. The first guy opened his bun, looked at his buddy and asked, "What part of the dog did you get"?
