drilnliftcrude - > The View From Here -> What The Limbaugh Quote Hoax Really Tells Us
What The Limbaugh Quote Hoax Really Tells Us

Listening to the contemporary American left’s views of the rest of us is increasingly like listening to a paranoid schizophrenic slip farther into delusions that they are surrounded by malevolent people. Just as we have to worry that the schizophrenic might act on their delusional beliefs and strike out violently against the evils they imagine, we have to be increasingly worried that leftists will strike out against the rest of us based on their delusional fantasies about what we non-leftists believe.

And make no mistake about it, leftists do harbor dark delusions about non-leftists. The fact that so many leftists fell completely for the Limbaugh quote hoax proves it.

The first rule of a good con or hoax is to appeal to the preconceptions and prejudices of the mark. The scammer weaves a story shot through with details that the scammer knows the mark already believes to be true. Conversely, this means that you can determine what a mark actually believes by observing what cons and hoaxes they fall for.

Watching so many serious journalists and leftist political figures fall for the fake Rush Limbaugh quotes tells us something very frightening about what leftists believe true about non-leftist America. I say, “frightening,” because we evaluate the level of threat that others pose based on our understanding of the amorality of their beliefs. Then we rationalize the harshness of the methods we are willing to employ against them based on our threat assessment. We are much more willing to use draconian methods against people we view as extremely evil than we are against people we judge less evil. As a nation, we were willing to employ much more draconian methods to defeat fascism than we employed to fight anyone else. The same basic principle applies to our internal conflicts as well. The more extreme and dangerous we view our political and social opponents as being, the more tolerant we become of extreme measures to oppose them.

Given this, what does it portend for American non-leftists that a wide and powerful swath of the American left apparently believes it quite credible that a major media figure with an audience in the tens of millions looks back fondly on slavery and approves of political assassination? What draconian methods could those leftists rationalize using if they really believe they are fighting people with such values?

As I have written before, immersion in fantasy is a defining aspect of leftism. As they move progressively towards the left pole of the political spectrum, the realities become more and more immersive while becoming more and more detached from reality. At the far end of the spectrum, the leftists become delusional to the point they believe they are trapped in a gotterdammerung struggle of good versus evil that justifies any action they might take in fighting that struggle. When dangerous fantasies, once the providence of the 5% most radical left, become accepted as true in the 40% just to the left of center, the rest of us are in great danger.

So we have to ask: Just how seriously deluded is the mainstream American left that they believed it credible that Limbaugh actually said the things attributed to him in the fake quotes?

Let’s be clear about what they believed Limbaugh actually said:

I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.

You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.

How can anyone believe that a mainstream American figure would believe such things, much less speak them aloud? As a practical matter, how do they imagine that a celebrity such as Limbaugh, who is one of the most recorded people in America, managed to keep these quotes hidden for so long? Why isn’t there audio or video of him making these or similar statements? How has he managed to be on the air for 20+ years without making more than these two slips?

Only someone seriously immersed in a deep fantasy about Limbaugh’s beliefs would swallow such quotes without checking them or thinking about the practical possibility of Limbaugh making such statements without every person in the world knowing about it within the hour. More troubling, not only would they have to believe that Limbaugh thinks that way but that his audience does as well.

They fell for the hoax because their fantasy about the evil of non-leftists tells them that most non-leftists think this way. They didn’t need to check on the provenance of the quotes any more than the rest of us need to check an assertion that the sun came up in the East this morning. It was just that obvious to them.

So, we come back to the main question: What methods could these deluded leftists justify using against the rest of us if they really believe we hold such beliefs and values as are inherent in the fake quotes? What couldn’t they justify doing to drive such people from politics or even the nation itself? We even have to ask, what level of violence could they justify using against us?

This isn’t about Limbaugh. They clearly view Limbaugh as just the most visible manifestation of tens of millions of Americans pining for the good old days of slavery. Make no mistake. They aren’t just targeting Limbaugh as someone so evil that they can justify any extremity in fighting him.

They are targeting the rest of us as well.

It's in our face every day, drill. I have 24 books in print so anyone that wants can paint me any color they want. Just what I post to TBC blog is enough for some wanting me to simply "disappear." But, so far so good and I'm still here.

Excellent article.  If you can't destroy them with the truth, just make it up.  The left will fall for it every time.

Michael Brown of Spirit Daily has some words for those who engage in such naughtiness:

CLEARING CONSCIENCE OF LIES LARGE AND SMALL PURIFIES WHAT WE WEAR IN ETERNITY

Whatever you lie about owns you. Did you ever consider that? To own is to control, or to possess. You are controlled by the untruths you tell because they create a false reality in which you must now live.

Once told, a lie has us stuck; a web we weave, is the famous way of putting it.

What is a lie?

There are various kinds. Some think there are "white" lies -- harmless little untruths.

There is no such thing.

There is no white or black or gray lie.

There is either telling the truth or not telling it and to God we are totally transparent.

There are lies of embarrassment: we can't stand a little truth about us.

There are lies of materialism: we pretend to be what we are not.

There are lies of omission. This is simply not telling something that is relevant, and especially if asked.

There are lies of taking something out of context, of distorting it, of using "spin."

These seem "minor," but are still lies because they deceive. There you have the definition: a lie is any form of deception.

When we are asked something and evade a truthful answer, we're lying by implication.

Our silence can lie. So can a smile. So can tears (when they're not real). So are little things like a secretary saying a boss isn't there when he is.

A lie is a lie is a lie and when one is told enough, it is believed.

Repeat something over and again about a person and it becomes ingrained. It takes on reality. Hitler knew this theory and called it "the Big Lie." We see it everywhere from government to Hollywood (acting) to advertising.

Some people think they are being clever when they get away with a deception. They have gotten away with nothing. God sees and hears all and has everything recorded -- even our thoughts. “Beware of the leaven – that is, the hypocrisy – of the Pharisees," said Jesus (see Luke 12). “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops."

We lie when we are intentionally inaccurate, when we convey a false impression, when we pretend. We lie when we stray from the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Pretense is a sign of the devil (who is the great deceiver). During an exorcism, one of the first breakthroughs a priest has to make is to dispel the pretense behind which the demon hides -- the "mirage." There is even a casino named this!

To deceive is to disconnect from someone, and diminish their dignity. It is an affront. It is an insult -- "intentional" or not. Small lies lead to bigger lies. We lose a piece of our humanity.

And they own us because it is with us and part of us until they are confessed.

The various forms include fibs, hype, exaggeration, false salesmanship, excuses that are untrue, cover stories, cheating (such as on taxes), and bold-faced prevarication.

Do you fib?

Do you exaggerate?

Do you perjure (we can even be indicted for it)?

Worst of all: have you spread false rumors about a person?

Remember a gigantic lesson from the Bible: the truth sets you free (John 8:32) (where lies bind you).

Do you overcharge?

Do you overstate the work you have done?

They are matters to take to the Confessional, until each one is cleared and the whiteness of purity replaces the little blots that sully the "robe" we wear into eternity.

Powerful stuff written here.  This last campaign for president did what may be very long lasting damage to our system.  I blame most of it on the liberals.  Similar to the fairly new poster on this site that pukes out nothing but vague lies about anything Republican or conservative.

posted by JohnfromBakersfield on Oct 21, 2009 at 05:31 AM

Clearly the above posters are new to the internet and the game of politics. Tons of fake quotes float around the net that both sides grab on to.

"Hey guys!! Did you guys hear Obama isn't a natural born citizen???" *insert fake source here* Boy did you Republicans run with that one.

Correction, JohnfromBakersfield. I think Pax is still running with that one.

Pax, Sam et. al., have a mutual masturbation society and are enjoying each others' company. Let's not disturb them with the truth.

Civilized people on this site will recognize pogo went far over the line with that personally insulting comment and I have rightly reported it to Jason as a violation of TOS. Such insults have cost this blog too many promising posters to allow such things to pass for too long.

posted by catpaw on Oct 21, 2009 at 08:28 AM

Snopes has researched the source of the "Obama is not a citizen" rumor to a journalist. The false Rush comments were repeated by news sources that were supposed to be credible. I've said it before: news sources have taken on the personality of tabloid reporting; repeating what they hear without checking the facts.

Rush did play a jingle to the tune of  Puff, the Magic Dragon to the lyrics of Obama being "the magic Negro."  That's not a fantasy, that's a fact. It tells me all I need to know about Rush's opinion and commentary. Rush is in no position to apply clinical psychiatric terms to anyone, and state it as fact.

When you say pogos comment was "dead-on accurate" does that mean you've actually witnessed this "mutual society" he speaks of?  Hmmmmm?

And what on earth does political party have to do with it?  My comment to sam was in response to pogos OFF topic, OFF color remark that was directed to "Pax, Sam, et al."

What the "Limbaugh quote hoax" tells us is that there's no hoax so silly that Faux News won't use it to boost the flaccid GOP.

i wish you guys would wake up and realize that while you engage in your tit (whoops, sam, dont report me  lol) for tatt game.....our country falls farther and farther from the once great position of the beacon of liberty for the rest of the world.  You ARE doing what the politicians and the government want you to do.....argue over he said, she said, while the politicians continue to bleed our country dry.  There are some on this board who i fully now believe want this to happen as well.

Wow learnem, that was harsh.  If pogo had actually said "mental" I might have thought it was funny.

As for me, I only get on this blog when I'm EXTREMELY bored.

And YOU seem to post a lot.  Just exactly what do you propose we do to keep our country from falling "farther and farther from the once great position of the beacon of liberty. . . "

I think what most of us do here, liberal or conservative, is called "venting."

"Such insults have cost this blog too many promising posters to allow such things to pass for too long."

Hi Sam; yes, it almost cost me, despite the fact that, for me, ignoring people and turning the other cheek has been the best way to keep negative energy from spinning out of control.  Then, I reconsidered the wisdom of letting the bad ones chase the good ones away.

Just one caution:  There are a couple people for whom I have run out of cheek to turn.  They continually say snotty and hateful things even though I have never been anything but kind to them.

One in particular, and she knows who she is, has already been suspended once.  Two strikes, you're out of here, I think.  She has a fixation with me and somehow "needs something" from me.  If she even begins to stalk me the way that she used to stalk another person here, I will do my best to hand her that second strike.

I consider Sam a friend.  What matters is not how much we agree with one another, but how we treat one another and whether we do it with love in our hearts.  That's the way it worked back when we were young.

Relying on any media talking head, (left or right) to form personal opinions is a mistake, and a total failure of the individual to live up to the responsibility of being a member of a free democratic republic.

well for one, we need to uphold the common-sensical laws.  Laws are the fabric the cover society to keep it safe, without enforcement of the laws, that protection is gone

another one is foreign interests.  when our politicians push an anti-american agenda, it is us, the people, who suffer for it.  So, lobbying should be against the law.  the only people our politicians should worry about are their constituents.

langauge is the third.  a common language is the sociatial glue that holds it together.  im not saying that no other languages should be spoken, what i am saying is that ONE language needs to dominate the landscape

Thanks, AD, for your addition to this thread.  I'm glad you're still here, and I hope you will continue to submit essays that, like those of a few others here, contribute mightily and make this a great place to visit.

You know well that there are many topics on which we have a basic disagreement; however, that hasn't prevented an ongoing "commentary" between us and among others.  What's more, it can be done with mutual respect.  That's beautiful.

posted by ALICEN on Oct 21, 2009 at 01:21 PM

driln:  I just wanted to make the comment that I don't know of anybody who is 100% free of bias.  The problem for those in prominence is that everything they say can be parsed to kingdom come, quoted and misquoted.  What they say then becomes ammunition for those who for whatever reason carry grudges, disagree or want to blow somebody away (figuratively, of course).

Anything anybody says can be taken out of context, and I believe that Limbaugh's quotes have been parsed, taken out of context, misquoted, etc.  Also, it's very hard to prove that something did not happen.  It's difficult to prove lack of bias.  That's just my opinion.

dream, you are exactly right, I should have used the term "mental masturbation" for Sam, Pax, et. al. Thanks for the correction.

And Sam, what you consider "out of line" is of no consequence to me. I think anyone who uses the term Devil to describe anyone else or their actions is out of line. Maybe I'll report you.
