dusty1215 - > Dusty's View of Life -> The Hero's of 9/11 need our help.
The Hero's of 9/11 need our help.
I was going to post this over here yesterday but never got around to it. It is still a message that needs to get out however, so today is as good a day as any.

The hero's I speak of today, are the firemen, policemen and volunteers that rushed to the twin towers after they collasped. They continue to suffer not just emotionally, but physically. The toxic materials that were pulverized by the destruction of the buildings entered their lungs as they dug through the debris looking for signs of life at first, then just looking for bodies to recover, and finally the construction workers that cleared the site. As the NYT article calls them, they are the Veterans of 9/11.

Roughly 40,000 individuals worked at the site of the twin towers, some for months and months on end. As Mount Sinai Medical Center reported last Tuesday, as many as seven in 10 of those who worked at ground zero and Fresh Kills on Staten Island have felt their lungs deteriorate because of their heroism. Yet many of these heros do not have health insurance five years after the fall of the towers. And the governments, both state and local, are not rushing to help them. People came as far away as Alaska to help in the recovery efforts at the site. Some of them worked with flimsy face masks, some with no protection at all. As one of the authors of the Mt. Sinai Report says: “There should no longer be any doubt about the health effects of the World Trade Center disaster,” said Dr. Robin Herbert, co-director of Mount Sinai’s World Trade Center Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program. “Our patients are sick, and they will need ongoing care for the rest of their lives.”

New York's Mayor Bloomberg isn't convinced of the on-going health issues of those that worked at the site. He is quoted as saying: “I don’t believe that you can say specifically a particular problem came from this particular event,”-I think The Mayor is a jackass for even thinking this, where is his compassion, how much digging did he do at ground zero?

As this article on Mt. Sinai's report states: “This was extremely toxic dust,” Dr. Landrigan said, noting that some samples showed the dust to be as caustic as drain cleaner. The dust also contained innumerable tiny shards of glass, which could get lodged in the lungs, and a stew of toxic and carcinogenic substances, like asbestos and dioxin, that could potentially lead to cancer decades from now.

There are studies that suggest over 40% of the workers do not have health insurance, yet they all suffer from some type of physical illness derived from their work at ground zero. The hero's that are suffering the worst were those that responded immediately after the towers collasped and spent days and weeks there digging among the ruins for victims. The most common problems are upper and lower respiratory problems. There are numbers of firemen and policemen that have died since the fall of the towers, from respiratory illness that their families are convinced happened because of their work at ground zero. Many workers are now too sick to work at their regular jobs and as such, have no health insurance as noted above. These individuals were there when it counted. We need to stand up for them now. We can not turn our backs on them. The federal government authorized 52 Million for healthcare of the individuals showing symptons of medical problems from their work at ground zero. Dr. John Howard, who was named the federal 9/11 health coordinator in February, has already said that the $52 million the federal government has appropriated for treatment late last year is inadequate. There is an ongoing study of the workers at ground zero called the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program. If you know someone that worked at ground zero, they need to access this program, the link is here.

Write to your elected representatives. Tell them that we will never forget the ones that served on that day and the months following when our nation was in shock and mourning the losses of thousands of individuals killed in the fall of the towers. Tell them that we need to take care of them as we have taken care of the families of those killed in the towers. Its the least we can do for those that served without a thought for their own safety and who now suffer for their heroism. Someone needs to speak for them. Most of them can barely speak for themselves because of their health problems. Don't let them be forgotten.

$52 million.  We spend that much *EVERY HOUR* in Iraq.
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 12, 2006 at 11:29 AM
Its a lot of money..but its not nearly enough..and the money was JUST THIS YEAR set aside..five years after the fact.
posted by samheath on Sep 12, 2006 at 01:43 PM
And all the hundreds of billions being spent abroad while Americans here at home are suffering. Lunatic is the most charitable term that comes to mind.

Your right Sam, its lunacy to spend billions a day in Iraq while the Gulf region needs to be rebuilt and the thousands of people that worked at Ground Zero are suffering and dying because of their heroics. Plus, the feds cut education grants and loans..its ridiculous the sacrifices we make here at home do continue the war in Iraq.

What happened to all those millions these guys already received? Forget the fancy Memorial and use the money for something useful.

"Those guys" have received nothing anon..the 52 mil was just granted this year..and it hasn't been allocated by the Federal Government  yet. The individuals that lost family in the towers got their money, yes..but the workers haven't gotten a penny for health problems..

If you believe that they have recieved Zero you are dreaming just appearances and books could buy you a new mansion. They are whiners, and media hounds, I gave once when it started but now I think it is all a big New York scam.

Anon, are you speaking of the volunteers that worked at the site after the towers fell? Or the people who lost loved ones in the fall of the towers?

The volunteers that worked on the site are having massive health issues..the toxic dust they breathed is killing many of them.

Be serious these guys are on TV appearance 24/7 and if they are anyones problem they are New Yorks problem. They should plead their case before the Wall Street securties exchange commission and  New York where the real money resides.
No matter what. if the victims were helped, share the wealth, it is a New York problem.

I remember in the days and weeks after 9/11 Christie Todd Whitman was saying on the tv that there was nothing hazardous in the air. Now she's claiming that it was hazardous, and they warned the State of New York, and that it was the state's responsibility to take care of things. How is it that she's not held responsible for waying what she did? Oh yea, nobody can be held responsible for anything anymore.....

Your right Mattloch, she is back-pedaling like crazy isn't she? She is now touting Nuclear Energy as the answer to our fossil fuel woes..never mind that we have NO method to deal with the radioactive waste..

Sub-seabed disposal, my friend.
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 13, 2006 at 11:49 AM
Mattloch..every idea they have for disposal is fraught with questions..there isn't one proven way to dispose of radioactive waste that will not come back to haunt us. Yucca Mt. in NV might never open and that was supposed to be foo-proof..but the fools that thought it up missed a few things evidently..

Let's face it.  We're in for some major lifestyle changes within many of our lifetimes.  How gracefully we make them depends on the thoughtfulness of the government that we elect.
.
Right now, portraying yourself as the thoughtful candidate is a sure way to get beat.
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 13, 2006 at 12:02 PM
I agree Hardliner..you have to look mean, militaristic and ready to blow terrorists away with a single nuclear bomb..Sad isn't it?
posted by mattloch on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:02 PM
I disagree Dusty. That's the way to win if you're a Republican. Appearing thoughtful is the way to win if you're a Democrat. It's called "courting the base". When the Ds realize this, they'll be able to give the Rs a run for their money, and perhaps even win a few elections. I seem to remember hearing that in an actual poll the "West Wing" president enjoyed higher numbers than the actual president...
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:04 PM
I don't know, Mattloch...  Appearing thoughtful sure didn't carry John Kerry.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:08 PM
I agree. Appearing thoughtful is a sure way to lose an election. The dems need to be ready for a mixed martial arts cage match, since the RNC has pledged to spend 90% of it's funds on negative Swift Boat style attack ads. Actually being thoughtful would probably get you re-elected though.
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:12 PM
If The Dem's portray themselves as against the occupation of Iraq, or the GWOT, then the Repubes commericals paint them as soft. The Repubes commericals are all negative..they always are. Look at Ahnolds commericals..and now the Democrats are playing the same game by painting AHnold as a Bush crony, when he actually told bush to take a hike regarding the National Guard going to the border.

The Dem's need their own talking points..not slams against Bush..Bush isn't running this year..The Dem's need to tell us what they will do if elected not play the blame game.
posted by mattloch on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:14 PM
Ok, caveat: You have to actually say what you're thinking, not just look like you're thoughtful. And you have to mean it. That means backing up your thoughts with conviction. That's where Gore failed as well. Your brain should be attached to a spine at some point...

Ok..I buy that mattloch.. this point about Chafee's win I read today, btw he is a liberal Repube and the only one to vote against going to Iraq among other things:

Chafee didn't just win the election by 8 points; he won it ugly. The smiley senator buried his fellow Republican with a constant barrage of negative ads that mostly personally attacked him.

And Pete is correct, the same article I pulled the Chafee info from also quotes the 90% of money going into negative ads by the Repubes..how do you combat negativity? It ain't easy my friend..
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:28 PM
(And they say that Dems can't win because they do nothing but attack.)  (Why, when it works for the Right?)
.
(Maybe because Dems are still expected to behave honorably -- an expectation that the voting public has long since given up for the other side.)
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:35 PM
Well, the negative ads are coming from Angelides too like I said..perhaps its the fact that people pay attention to them more than the ones where the candidate has 60 seconds to say what he is going to do? ITs easier to watch 60 seconds of slamming someone..you don't have to think about those..
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:45 PM
That's true.  Since there are no liberal voices in the media, Dems are left with little option except to make the most of precious high-dollar 60-second ad spots.
.
Dems don't have the luxury of a dozen talking heads making your points for you 24 hours a day.
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 13, 2006 at 03:49 PM
True dat Hardliner..the Dem's don't get their own "docudrama" right?
posted by mattloch on Sep 13, 2006 at 04:40 PM
Nobody said honor wouldn't have a downside, Hard. The Dems would be better off if they showed one attack ad lie and why it was a lie. Nobody would trust anything that came out from the other side after that, ever. Just show one bad, bald-faced lie, and brand them a liar. ("I never said X." Roll footage of them saying X ala Daily Show) ("Candidate X said they will raise taxes, and rape babies in prison" Show footage of Candidate X saying "I will raise taxes on billionaires" and "I will put people who rape babies in prison.")  "You can't trust them to tell the truth for 60 seconds, why reward them for 2/4/6 years?" There's no coming back from that. That is how you win with honor.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Sep 13, 2006 at 04:54 PM
That's right mattloch. Use their footage against them. Look at what happened to Allen after his ugly french racist remarks. I saw a commercial (didn't hear it) on dailykos that showed a veteran shooting at 2 bulletproof vests. One that was govt issue, and one that he bought himself. The govt issue let bullets through, the one he bought didn't. It was pretty powerful. I'm sure what he was saying made it even more so. Let me know what you think.

That was a powerful ad Pete! Jeebus, it gave me goosebumps..I am going to run it on my personal blog..the Dems need more of those..good find Pete..It says a ton in 30 seconds!

Dems were against attacking Iraq... Lets pull up the voting record, shall we.....???
Cut taxes for the rich??? Well, well....Look likes we got record government tax receipts.....Some of the lowest unemployment this country has seen  (except in liberal Detroit, imagine that)...

I sure hope that war hero douche bag from Mass runs for president....
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 15, 2006 at 04:01 AM
Lowest unemployement the country has seen since when? Unemployment happens to be rising as the new jobs created numbers are going downward..sorry to burst your bubble on that one see this site for the details. No one said the Dem's were against attacking Iraq, pull your head out of your ass there anon, this post is about the workers at Ground Zero. As for record government tax reciepts they come primarily not from individuals wages, but from Corp. profit's more than any other time in our country's history. And calling someone a war hero AND a douche bag is downright stupid and dare I say ..expected from an anonymous troller such as yourself. As for tax cuts for the rich, aka the estate tax, when the Dems put a min. wage attachment to that bill in the House version, its cleared..however, the Repubes in the Senate refused to to go for it..Imagine that..so that bill is still in limbo in the Senate.

Thanks for giving us your two cents on the important issues of the day anon.

Actually, individual income tax receipts are down since 2000.  It's corporate tax receipts (surprise surprise) that jumped and made up the difference.
posted by dusty1215 on Sep 15, 2006 at 08:35 AM
Isn't that what I said Hardliner?
posted by mattloch on Sep 15, 2006 at 08:36 AM
Actually actually, individual tax receipts for the lowest income people are down since 2000. Tax receipts from the richest 1% and 5% are up since 2000. Some would say it's because taxes have become more progressive. I say it's because the richest have become richer, doubly so after you factor in lower tax rates for them.

I would agree with you Mattloch. Its the haves and have-nots..
