dusty1215 - > Dusty's View of Life -> Rumsfeld tells everyone to "back off" the timetables for Iraq.
Rumsfeld tells everyone to "back off" the timetables for Iraq.
"The Donald" got a little heated yesterday in his press conference. I did watch some of it. Here is a writeup about his little temper tantrum regarding the timetables set for Iraq to take over the security of their own country. Did He miss the part where the Pres. said there were timetables in place and they were all going according to plan?

Apparently Rummy did. But several news people remembered, and when they quizzed Rummy about the Iraqi's meeting those timetables he blew up.

Perhaps the timetables are out the window now because the Iraq PM Maliki has told us to "shove it" with regard to setting deadlines, timetables, whatever you want to call them..he said we, as in the US, can't tell him what to do..

Reminds me of when I was a kid and I told my brother..Your not the boss of me.

Its our money, its our soldiers and I think its not too much to ask that they adhere to a set of benchmarks, timetables, timelines..whatever the hell you want to call them... as to when they will run their own country...or at the very least police it.

But...I bet its hard to police a country in the throes of civil war. And since Maliki refuses to call off the death squads his own religious group is using to terrorize their own citizens of the opposite religious beliefs..I don't think he is really trying to do anything other than stretch this out indefinently.

I forgot this lovely quote from the NYT article regarding timetables and such:

"His comments stood in stark contrast to the message given Tuesday by the top two United States officials in Iraq, Gen. George W. Casey Jr. and Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who said the timetable for political measures had been accepted by the Iraqi government."

That press conference was incredible.  My favorite part was refering to Pakistan as remote mountains in central Asia and Iraq as the heart of the Middle East.  Or the part about it depends on what the meaning of "it" is.

The "it" thing had me rolling in the aisle Tom..which for me is no mean feat..the trashed back and all.

In Rumsfeld's world, the press isn't allowed to ask any quesiton that isn't filtered beforehand. I'm sure he wishes he could turn back the clock and go back to the days where the Press Corps didn't ask difficult questions or ask follow ups when he doesn't give them a straight answer. I'd feel sorry for the guy if it were someone else, but in this case I would encourage the press do really try to get him to lose it.

I'll have to ckeck the link when I have sound available.

He was really going after the reporter..it was a sad meltdown Pete. Like you said..no one has the right to question his authority.

Did anybody read the interview between Woodward, Rummy, and two generals from the DOD? I'll try to track the link down if anyone is interested, but throughout the whole thing what struck me was the complete and total ignorance of the actual situation Rummy confessed to. Remembering things that happened a few months or years ago, I understand completely; but he had no earthly idea what was actually happening out in the field. Nothing at all. He had no control over any of the generals, of the civilian administrators, no inkling of their plan or plans of action in any field, civilian or military, and no clear strategy for the future of the country. That's why he's getting so pissed when he gets pressed; he has no idea and so blows up to make the reporter look like the jerk. When you can't attack the information, or the story, of the facts, or reality, you go after the messenger. In this case, it was the reporter.

Geez people. Don't you know the difference between a benchmark and a timetable???
I think there are 93 marks on that bench this month alone.
The only "benchmark" I see achieved is a new low in administration stupidity and arrogance.

It's funny how Rummy said is was all simple in the first part, then it was a complicated thing in the second half. His arguement was like the reporter said "O.J. rushed for 2000 yards in one season", when "everyone knows it was 2003 yards". You're dead wrong! Retract that statement.

Inga will do anything to get a photo op, or be able to namedrop. But to her credit, she makes no bones about her aspirations to be the biggest schmoozing coat tailer in the world of the GOP.

http://cryptome.org/bob-v-d... Just try to count how many times he asks one of the generals for info, or they have to jump in to correct him. I lost count after running out of fingers and toes.....  ;)
