‘Zero tolerance’ for street racing
PUBLISHED 10/16/07 ---

The sickening sound of grinding metal and glass. A deadly crash on Stockdale Highway near Fairway Drive. One woman dead. Her husband in critical condition. A toddler injured. Two men have been arrested on criminal charges.

Sunday night’s fatal accident was no accident. It was just plain stupidity, negligence, and reckless, unlawful behavior.

It is an all too familiar story — one being played out with increasing frequency throughout California.

Police believe the drivers of a Chevy Tahoe and a Mitsubishi Galant were engaged in a “speed contest” on Stockdale Highway when they blew through a red light at Fairway Drive and hit a Mercedes sedan that had entered the intersection from Fairway Drive.

Jose Hernandez, 38, whose 2-year-old daughter — a passenger in the Tahoe — was injured, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving, child endangerment and driving on a suspended license. Ryan Weissrock, 22, the driver of the Mitsubishi, was charged with hit-and-run. He reportedly left the scene of the crash and later returned.
Barbara Keyser Blair, who was riding in the Mercedes, died. Her husband, John Blair, is reported in critical condition in a local hospital.

Speed contests. Drunken driving. Driving without valid driver’s licenses. All too common in Kern County. All too common in California.

State law enforcement officials report an epidemic of street racing on California roads. In 2006, more than 6,000 people were convicted in California of participating in speed contests.

Not all those contested ended in tragedy. But many do. Too many do. State officials estimate about 100 people die every year in California as a result of illegal street racing.
Ironically, the same day Barbara Blair lost her life, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that immediately reinstated a law police use to punish those who engage in deadly sideshow car pranks and races.

The 2002 law originally proposed by the city of Oakland and backed by the League of California Cities, inexplicably was allowed to expire. With an “urgency provision,” the Legislature passed a new version that went into effect with Schwarzenegger’s signature. It allows law enforcement agencies to impound cars up to 30 days — at the owner’s expense — if they are involved in the illegal activities.

That’s a good start in coming down tough on street racers and drivers who engage in thrill seeking. It’s not enough.

Metropolitan Bakersfield must become a “zero tolerance zone” for drunken drivers, thrill seekers and those driving without valid licenses. A mechanism exists that can make life miserable for these criminals.

State, county and municipal law enforcement agencies have formed the Avoid the 18 Kern County task force. On holidays and other high-impact weekends, law enforcement officers are out in force patrolling and conducting traffic stops. Numerous arrests are made in these sweeps for drunken driving  and driving without valid driver’s licenses.
Kern County and the 11 cities within the county must commit more funds and manpower to increase the strength of this task force and the number of sweeps.

Come down hard — real hard.

Just to be clear.  Did both cars hit the Blair car?

I used to live right down the street from where this happened and there was always some idiot who wove in and out of traffic driving like a bat out of hell.  I saw my share of crashes in the 9 years I lived in that area, and Stockdale between California and Gosford is a nightmare.

Every one of my coworkers said they hear street racing late at night, on Kroll Way at Gosford, Harris at Reliance, Belle Terrace.  Zero tolerance by The Californian is fine, but let's let the Bakersfield Police in on it.  I mean, how many calls can you make to BPD before you get cynical and give up?

Yes, mild!! Every single Friday and Saturday night, there are racers on Reliance - between Harris and Panama.  The only thing that changes is the hour at which they begin.  It can be as early as 9pm or as late as 3:00am.  It's the 3:00 stuff that I worry most about (since they sound and drive as if they're intoxicated).

I'm not sure about how possibly dangerous it would be to get up, go out with a very strong flashlight and at least act like you're writing down license plate numbers.  Cameras?  Strobes?

It might take a neighborhood watch type group to put a stop to it.  I would then march to the police station every Monday morning with the list and demand they do something.  They probably can't but I'd be making them wish they could.  My squeaky wheel can get really loud when I'm....uh...irritated.

Nancy, no, only the Tahoe hit the Mercedes.

Nancy,

At one point, last summer, my husband DID go check it out.  Our street cul-de-saqs to a wall that runs parallel to Reliance.  Hubby went over to the wall with a small step ladder and peaked over to see what he could see.  One of the racers noticed him (as they usually try to start stopping right where our street would run into Reliance) and yelled some profanities at him ("Mind your own f------ business!").  He came back in and called the cops.  By the time the cops got here, they were gone.  BUT- what was scarier was that, about five days later, they did a small drag trial ON OUR STREET.  From the inlet road to the end of the cul-de-saq.  Hubby and I stood in our little ones' nursery and watched.  As they were leaving, a young man yelled "How do you f------ like that!?"  So... I wouldn't recommend anyone go out and say anything.  They didn't know where we lived, but the fact that they decided to "show us" (on the street) was concerning.  I wish BPD would sit at the corner of Reliance and Wilderness and catch these guys...or, any number of the speeders from that road.  It's insane.

Good argument for speed bumps. What scarey about this particular incident is speeders weren't teens but grown men; one with a baby in the car. Too bad being stupid is not a crime; these two morons would get life.

Possum, My teenage son and his friends, don't even walk home in the Silver Creek area anymore.  They get taunted, threatened, chased, just walking along Harris.  If my son has to get home from a friend's house (doesn't drive yet), he takes back streets.  On more than one occasion, he has had to scale the cinderblock walls on Reliance to get away and has even rung a stranger's doorbell to get off the street.

How sick is this?  This is a good middle-class neighborhood, the kids have everything they could want affluence-wise.  I swear I do not see a good outcome for these older kids who streetrace, threaten, and have complete, utter disrespect for anyone or anything.  Are they all feral, raised in the wild, or are their parents scum, too?

I am not about to defend the drivers' actions, however, the media is making this incident seem like these two drivers were out looking for a street race.  The driver of the Tahoe did many, many things wrong, but he was not out driving around looking for someone to race.  The fact is, like countless others in this nation, this man has a drinking problem.  Yes, he used poor judgement in getting behind the wheel, especially with his young daughter as a passenger.  Yes, he once again excerised poor judgement in letting himself get wrapped up in the machoism of showing off against another young, immature driver.  If  you were to ask him, he'd tell you he has no idea why he took the younger driver's challenge.  As we all know, alcohol impairs your judgement.

Who knows what was in the younger driver's head.  You can't blame alcohal for his behavior, so I just chalk it up to immaturity, stupidity, and lack of respect for life and property.

The Blairs' are not the only family suffering a loss.  Hernandez has a family too.  It is not his wife's or children's fault their husband/father did what he did, but they are the ones who will now have to deal with what he did.  They will no longer have their daddy in their home,  most likely they will lose their house.  His family stands to lose everything they have. The Weissrock family will see their young family member, with no priors, behind bars for a good chunk of time.

This is all so tragic.  My heart goes out to the Blairs', Hernandez', ad Weissrocks' FAMILIES.  Not to the individuals who involved themselves in the racing - they will get  what they deserve - but their FAMILIES are the ones who are left to suffer and deal with the results.

what i want to know is the district att. going to prosecute the owner of the Tahoe for allowing this PERSON to drive the Tahoe!

in my opinion the owner should be charged for manslaughter also.  the person who owned the vehicle more than likely new his past and knew of his record!  i will be very upset if they don't at least do a year in prison just for ALLOWING TIHS TO HAPPEN !

i feel sorry for the little girl she is a victim of circumstance and thank god she survived!

THE BLAIR FAMILY IS VERY DEAR TO MY FAMILY AND I WISH THEM ALL THE BEST IN THE WORLD! REMEMBER THEY ARE THE TRUE VICTIMS OF THIS  TRAGEDY!

 MAY GOD BE WITH YOU!

mrredbutton, what makes  you think the driver of the Tahoe is not the owner????  You are making assumptions

My point exactly, the children of the Tahoe driver are effected too.  The Blair family are not the only ones to suffer a loss.

Surely you wouldn't try to *EQUATE* the two losses, Sala?  Seems to me they're of different orders of magnitude.

Sorry sala~ while it's true the perpetrators families will suffer, they still have living breathing relatives..the Blair family is the only family here with a death~and that's the only loss here. I am sorry for the young persons family ,as I am for the driver of the Tahoe..but death trumps jail time.

Do you people NOT read words????   RANDOMFACTOR and SAGEFEVER, go back and re-read what I wrote.  I did NOT equate the two losses.
