A sad sign of the times?
You can get gift cards to almost any store or Web site, for almost any good or service, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone created a gift card for something that leads to half of all bankruptcies — health care.

A Pittsburgh health insurer is selling Healthcare Visa Gift Cards.

Cards range from $25 to $5,000 and can be used for "co-pays at doctor's and pharmacies; dental care including braces and teeth whitening; vision care including eye exams and prescription sunglasses; memberships at health clubs and elective procedures including Lasik and cosmetic surgery."

To get a more extensive list of uses and details, check out the FAQs.

Getting a health care gift card isn't as exciting as Guitar Hero, but then again, what's more important than your health, right?

Are any of you considering this for that last, hard-to-buy-for person on your list?

The cards can only be purchased on-line and cost $4.95 plus shipping and handling plus a monthly maintenance fee of $1.50 beginning the ninth month after purchasing.

I don't know if this represents the dexterity and ingenuity of capitalism and consumerism or another sad indication of a failing health care system.

What are your thoughts?

I found a better one...

www.prepaidhealthcare.com.

It's less of a consumer card and more for employers to give to employees if the employer can't provide health insurance. The fees are similar. This card has no monthly maintenance fee, which seems better in my opinion. I'd use it if my employer gave it to me...
