Stores caught selling tobacco to minors
Cigarette smoking is responsible for about one in five deaths annually, or about 438,000 deaths per year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is also the leading preventable cause of death. The county released the findings today of their annual campaign to suss out stores that sell tobacco to teens. Roughly 20 percent of the 195 Kern stores surveyed between Oct. 27 and Dec. 26 sold tobacco to high school students acting as decoys, county Public Health Services Director John Nilon announced this morning. This is down from 26 percent in 2006 and 34 percent the year before, according to the county, but it dwarfs the state average of 10.7 percent. Forty clerks were cited, including 17 in Bakersfield. The crime carries a $200 fine for the first offense, $500 for the second and $1,000 for the third. In case you were wondering which stores failed the test, here's the list, furnished by the county Public Health Services Department. ED’S MINI MART & GAS
