A recall that makes my stomach turn
The amount of beef being recalled is staggering. As In-N-Out Spokesman Robert Emmers said, "Once you read it (the list), you really won’t want a hamburger." Roughly 143 million pounds of raw and frozen beef products were recalled Sunday after footage of cattle being abused at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. in Chino surfaced. Local In-N-Out and Jack in the Box restaurants may have received some of the recalled beef, restaurant officials said yesterday. But the threat is over, they say, considering the affected meat has either been disposed of or eaten. (Read "Local eateries may have received recalled meat" in today's Californian.) Has this recall changed your beef buying habits? The release the USDA sent out about the recall is attached to this post. And just so you know all the products being recalled, here's the list:

I concluded almost a year ago that eating any meat (unless raised on your own little farm) was a gamble. Since I don't have my own little farm, I'll continue to be a vegetarian. posted by

The list of possibly tainted meat includes steaks and other cuts not normaly ground for burger which was likely sold to restaurants and retail markets in addition to wholesalers. It could be in anyone's freezer. I hope we will eventually find out more detail including specifically to whom the meats wore sold. Sadly, this nightmare is only the tip of the iceberg. The Humane Society chose Hallmark/Westland at random for its undercover investigation. The HS president said it is highly likely the same inhumane and potentially deadly practices by Westland are ongoing by other processors at plants across the nation.

hope this meat stuff is not what is on the menu at Famous Amos or whatever the new venue is. Do you suppose that is why they needed protection to promote their opening, and why the fire department participated, oh well job security as they always respond to emergenies at these places. It is a good investment, and a boon for the Mayors ambulance service too! posted by

For anyone who thinks this is an oddity, check out the movie "Fast Food Nation". I eat meat about once or twice a week now. I think I may have to cut back. posted by

Hillary is beginning to look very desparate. I heard she wanted to make nice with Obama, and that she was planning on inviting him over for a special roast beef recipe. posted by

Though I'm loath to admit it, random, that one has me laughing, much louder and harder than Hillary can cry. LOL! posted by

I'm thinking oatmeal, pancakes, and eggs sound pretty good right now. Maybe a pan of fried taters too. In olive oil of course..no lard. posted by

I do recommend everyone purchase, or borrow, Fast Food Nation, and read it. There is also another great book in the marketplace of information entitled The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. These are not politically charged diatribes, although readers may find who in government protects whom real food for thought. They offer the reader the chance to actually see what is behind the curtain regarding our very recent introduction of mass produced food on our world. The wave of recalls over the past few years over tainted foods with deadly bacteria highlight a very complex dilemma we face as a society. The interconnectedness between all aspects of society and the food that is processed and sold is the real story Schlosser and Pollan describe. How can effective solutions to this very real and present threat be dealt with if most people have no idea what goes into our food supply? How do we enact the necessary changes to ensure health and maintain a modicum of quality to our lives? Is it our goal as a nation to create drone jobs for conglomerates in mini-food factories for our kids to work in? We are at the point where we must accept that the kitchen is now a bio-hazard zone. What are we going to do about it? posted by

About 100 years ago or so,I attended Cal Poly days. The Home Economics Department had set up two tables~a then and now diorama .Table one had whole grains, milk, cheese, fruits, vegetables,a small amount of red meat.Table two had instant mashed potatoes, canned fruit, vegetables, desserts, snack foods, all the modern conveniences. My friend and I never could figure out why table two was considered so much better.Sure, I love some Cheetos now again, but whole ,real, plant based food can not be beat.
