Medical school in Bakersfield?
Location: Mt. Vernon Avenue and College Avenue, Bakersfield, CA

I had heard talk about a medical school coming to UC Merced.

But if one local politician has his way, that medical school would reside in Bakersfield, possibly next to Kern Medical Center.

I just spoke to Supervisor Michael Rubio, who said his staff will give UC officials a proposal in early August to house the facility in Kern.

UC Merced's current plan is to create a hybrid program, with students spending the first two years at the Merced campus and the final two years in Fresno or remote clinics, Rubio said.

He is proposing a more conventional medical school program.

One idea is to put the school on the Mt. Vernon Avenue campus, where KMC resides, in new buildings.

UC Merced's Medical Education and Health Sciences site lists this as their reason for a valley med school:

The San Joaquin Valley, which runs from Stockton to Bakersfield, is rich in cultural diversity and is the nation’s leading agricultural region. However, the area is seriously medically underserved. Access to health care is 31 percent lower in the Valley than in the rest of California. A projected statewide shortage of physicians coupled with a rapidly growing population provides a daunting outlook for health care access in the Valley in the future.

What do you think about putting a med school in Bakersfield? Is this the best place for it? What would it do for the community?

I'm always in support of an investment in higher education for Bakersfield.

Just exactly where are people going to park at the Mount Vernon campus?  There isn't enough room for another building unless they plan on knocking down the Sheriff substation.

Here's hoping the proposal flies!

You're right Antiex.  Forget finding space for another building; we are already fighting over parking spaces over here.  Where would we park another 100 or more vehicles?

Multi level parking garage.

Nancy, that idea has been thrown around, even before the medical school talk, but with the current budget, I don't see it happening any time soon.

Shuttle buses. Park at Mercado Latino, and a quick drive up Mt. Vernon, you are there.

Pam..we wouldn't want them to do anything that makes sense would we?  :-)

San Joaquin did it but then.......

Sounds good. But Mercy Southwest has more space.

KMC is already a teaching hospital if that makes any difference.

Plus, the county doesn't own the land around Mercy Southwest.

A parking structure is still being talked about it, but you're right, no funds. When they put up the Health Dept. they should have spent an extra million for a parking structure. Unfortunately, although conservatism is good regarding public funds, the County sometimes pinches a penny that will cost them a dollar down the road.
