Did you eat some of the recalled beef? The state Department of Public Health released the list of retailers that received beef from the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co., the Chino slaughterhouse at the center of the biggest beef recall in U.S. history. (The complete list is attached to this post.) Here are the Kern County retailers: Triple A Meat Sales, 1400 Sumner St., Bakersfield, CA 93305, (661) 725-7213 Mike's Roadhouse Cafe #2, 15834 Sierra Highway, Mojave, CA 93501,...

Want to know how much the presidential candidates' health plans cost? And what the plans mean to the federal government, states, employers and you? I just came across a site that may help you out. It's ReformPlans.com, run by the World Health Care Congress. The site has a grid of the plans, issue briefs, links to news articles and a glossary. And along with the candidates' plans, it has info on state, national, international and interest group plans. I haven't had time to really delve into...

With every milestone, Baby Boomers have redefined what age means. And it's no wonder. There are only 78 million of them. I'm focusing more of my efforts on writing health stories tailored to Baby Boomers, that generation of people 43 to 62 years old. This started Sunday with the story "Boomer health: Advice on the best pain relievers and when to see a doctor." With the first Boomers reaching retirement, health and aging will become increasingly more important issues. Boomers,...

A federal advisory panel voted today to recommend flu shots for all school-aged kids. This change, which is being called the largest expansion of flu vaccine coverage in U.S. history, broadens the scope from children under 5, people over 50 and people with chronic conditions, according to the Associated Press. It means about 30 million more children could be getting inoculated. This was done because: Children who stay home sick from school lead to more parents staying home to care...

I spent most of my night Thursday in Kern Medical Center's emergency department — not because I was sick or hurt but because I wanted to find out about the people who work there and the patients who go there for care. (Look for the story soon in The Californian.) While I was shadowing, one of the employees mentioned something interesting to me. He said that for what it costs someone to buy cigarettes for a month, that person could afford health insurance. This intrigued me. Is that...

The Bakersfield Planned Parenthood office received its first shipment of Proper Attire condoms -- male condoms marketed to women -- about a week ago, said one of its officials.     They come with a slogan: No entry without Proper Attire. The idea is to make women more comfortable buying male condoms. (Read "Clinic kicks off 'No Entry Without Proper Attire' condom campaign" in today's Californian and "Who provides the condom?" on the Talk of the Town blog.)...

The amount of beef being recalled is staggering. As In-N-Out Spokesman Robert Emmers said, "Once you read it (the list), you really won’t want a hamburger." Roughly 143 million pounds of raw and frozen beef products were recalled Sunday after footage of cattle being abused at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. in Chino surfaced. Local In-N-Out and Jack in the Box restaurants may have received some of the recalled beef, restaurant officials said yesterday. But the...

Cigarette smoking is responsible for about one in five deaths annually, or about 438,000 deaths per year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is also the leading preventable cause of death. The county released the findings today of their annual campaign to suss out stores that sell tobacco to teens. Roughly 20 percent of the 195 Kern stores surveyed between Oct. 27 and Dec. 26 sold tobacco to high school students acting as decoys,...

Did any of you get to see "Away from Her" as part of last Friday's FLICS at the Fox Theater? It was very good, and I urge any of you who haven't seen it to give it a viewing. Here's the plot summary from IMDB.com: Fiona and Grant are an Ontario couple who have been married for over 40 years. Now, in the oncoming twilight of their years, they are forced to face the fact that Fiona's "forgetfulness" actually is Alzheimer's disease. After Fiona wanders away and is found...

The GOP candidates didn't talk about health care much in their last debate, so I culled some comments from some of the last few go-arounds. Some of the themes they hit upon include personal responsibility, government-controlled health care and the role of inflation in the health care crisis. How much responsibility should be placed on the individual to pay for their care? Do you think government-controlled health care, or "socialized medicine," will work? How does inflation...

Super Tuesday is only a handful of days away. Do you know who you are going to vote for? Unfortunately, I missed the past couple debates. So to help anyone like me get up to speed, below are excerpts about health care from the Democratic debate last night. (Excerpts from the last Republican debate will be in my next post.) Two aspects of this health care debate that were touched upon were mandating health coverage and how the candidates' health plans would be paid for. Should health...
