Don't Scold Us for Using Alternative Health Methods

The July 31 Californian in their "Health" column had the article "Billions spent on alternative care" as if that were a bad thing. That was also all over Internet today. Why shouldn't we take responsibility for our health, and only go to the doctor if what we do doesn't work? (I am not referring to stroke or heart attacks which are true emergencies and need immediate response.)

Doctors don't have all the answers, and most of them acknowledge that. As for the ones who think only MDs know anything about sickness and wellness, they should be reminded that their profession for almost 100 years ignored Semmelweis theory of the connection between dissecting cadavers and fatal childbirth fever, and Louis Pasteur's germ theory. And if back surgery for back pain only works half the time, why not try  a combination of physical therapy, massage, accupuncture and chiropractic treatment first, depending on the individual's preference?

This freedom to choose is something I fear we'll lose if health care is nationalized.

Looks like they (lawmakers) will be taking there badly (LOL) needed break and will take up the issue when they return

so for the next month that is all we will hear from both sides as they try to get support for there side.

It's our bodies, and I say we maintain them as we see fit (hehe).  My previous physician GILLI threw a tantrum one day because I asked for a refill on my vicodin.  I told him I was not going to a physical therapist to sweat and stretch and do all of these humilating things when I could pop one pill a day (just one, it's not like I abused them) and make the pain go away.  He had a fit, his staff became rude and so I went to a doctor who gave me what I want and prescribed alternatives (cortisone shots / acupuncture).

It frustrates me to see an elderly family member of mine finally take an active interest in her health only to be shuffled around and co-paymented to death between her primary physician and other specialists.  By the time she got to someone who could take care of her the authorization had either expired or she faced even larger copayments for surgery.  Despite being retired, mobility was an issue for her and she was constantly having family members help because something as simple (for someone not disabled) as parking became a major issue for her because of their bad knees.  As a result, the surgery never took place and fell one day and died.

The above comments about the lack of communication between doctors and their patients, reflect a need I saw in developing my own nursing practice as a health care coach. I meet with people in their homes, help them define their health problems and health goals, and help them find ways to achieve them. I charge for my time of course, but as a licensed professional, that is deductible on your income tax.

My impression of these articles was they were more wondering a) why people spend so much on alternative health care and b) if they would continue to do so if a national health care plan passes Congress. I didn't see it scolding alternative methods so much as wondering about alternative methods and their popularity.
