Thank God, I have kids to explain things to me
I remember when older people used to be wise in the ways of the world.

Well, that's changed.

I'm going to buy my wife a computer printer for her birthday.

There's almost no such thing as just a computer printer. They come in packages of printer, scanner and photo printer, with other options including copier and fax machine.

Price ranges from $60 to $230 or more.

Some come with two cartridges — black and color — and some come with five, including   magenta, cyan,  yellow and two shades of black.

And you can get inkjet or laser. Plus, a plethora of brands such as HP, Epson, Cannon, Kodak and Lexmark.

That's a lot of stuff for my little brain to process.

So I called my 25-year-old son, a newspaper photographer, who has already fully processed the intricacies of printers.

He explained what to look for, the advantages and disadvantages of different systems, the good brands and the price range appropriate for a quality product that will satisfy all of my wife's needs.

I think computer printers are a microcosm of the various choices facing consumer on any product more complicated than a plate warmer.

We could rely on sales people to explain all this to us, but of course they have something they are trying to sell us.

I prefer my son who has my best interest in mind.

How do you decide these consumer choices?

P.S. If my son ever needs a new golf driver, I'll be happy to explain the nuances of clubhead, shaft,  grips as they relate to swing speed.

The company with the least offensive advertising gets my purchasing dollar.

If that's the case I will never buy furniture at Mors or eat at Morisimo's.

Haha!

They still have those kids yelling the name of the restaurant a billion times a day? My wife hated them as much as I hated Mor! The only solution is to move away, Roy. Tis a pity...

Apparently the Mauricio's ads aren't working, if Roy can't recall the name correctly.

I never make a large purchase without consulting Consumer Reports Magazine.  It has served me well.

Thanks Random. I need some guidance from you, our resident Kindergarten teacher.

That's just the vicious circle, Random. Successful businesses with ghastly commercials are convinced the commercials are working due to their loyal knuckle-dragging customers.

I have a friend that is older than me but owned a couple of computer businesses back when I wasn't sure what they were. So he takes care of my tech needs, like putting numbers in my phone, taking and sending photos via Internet, you know all those very high tech skills. Al tough I think it might be more humbling than having a youngster do it.  He knows all brands writes articles for a computer mag so gets me reviews if needed, I really don't have the patience to read up on that type of product.

I recently bought a Scanner/Printer/Copier/Fax that was a Consumer Reports best buy.  I'm also a huge believer in researching a product before I let loose the death grip I have on my money.  The problem is, the only time I'm able to receive a fax is at 2 AM from unsolicited sources.  Any other time, the sender gets a busy signal!

As I have whined about lately, my flatbed scanner bit the dust and I went looking for another.  Geeezzz..when did they decide that little thing (when you can find them) should cost an arm and a leg?  The last one I bought was about 30 bucks.  Now it's the All In One that Steve mention.  Since I have a very good printer and an excellent fax machine that I only use to confound telemarketers computer callers, I didn't want the expense of an all in one.  I only needed a scanner for crying out loud.  I shopped til I nearly dropped.  I made comparison notes and lost them...I scoured sale ads and made more comparison notes which I thought I left home when I went back out shopping but had really stashed them in my back pocket not realizing that until I got home (I know..run on sentence).  I probably spent the extra 50 bucks in gas but I was determined the electronics industry wasn't going to get the best of me.

In the end, I found a discontinued HP all in one for the amazing price of 29.88.  It's still in the box from Monday morning so I have no clue if it is right for me...but when I do get around to opening it, I'll let you folks know.

Steve..you have my sympathy.

All I needed was a scanner.

Sigh, I have to admit I have three printers. Yes folks, that's right. One is an HP Officejet 7310 with copier, scanner, printer, fax, and the best feature for my prior job - automatic feed for legal size copying or scanning. The second printer is an HP Photosmart D7160 with SIX ink cartridges. Honestly though - the 7310 is the best for pictures I think.  Then I have an Epson I did love and it is packed away right now, I had to replace it with the 7310 when I started working from home.

I am also a firm believer is Consumer Reports - you can chose to subscribe online for a year and to me, it's worth it. Lastly, never go for the cheapest, and always go a step up, because a little tiny bit extra goes a long way when it comes to printers, scanners, etc.

I agree about not going for the cheapest.  In this case it was only cheap because it was discontinued and didn't have the slots for the different  cards.    I'm scanning OLD pictures in and putting htem on disc so printer quality, speed, convenience and all that aren't an issue for me.  Anything off my camera is fed directly into my computer.

I bid on a new flatbed scanner on ebay but somehow my snipe didn't work and it never bid for me.  I lost out on it at the tune of 17.76 plus 7.00 shipping I think it was.  I decided I needed it faster than the next one up for bid (that I also might lose) so I went out and bought this new one.  You know...the one I was in such a hurry for that's still in the box.

Geeeezzzizz  ...That's about the 6th time I've had to sign in today.  This is getting old.

The weird thing is once I sign in I'm usually ok til I leave the computer for a while then I have to sign in again.  And I have not turned it off.

Nancy, I reported your earlier mention of the problem to our developers--this sounds like what used to happen before a fix--don't know what's up now.  Will keep you posted.
