eyeofbakersfield - > Eye of Bakersfield -> A $2,000 puppy stolen in Oildale
A $2,000 puppy stolen in Oildale
I have always obtained my pet dogs from the pound for less than $50 so it is hard for me to wrap my head around a $2,000 puppy.

But that's what Jean Percival was selling an English bulldog nicknamed Runt for when two men stole the dog.

If you look in the classifieds, you can see this breed selling for $3,000 or $4,000. That's more than I used to pay for 750 cc, full-dress motorcycles.

I feel sad for Ms. Percival's loss.

But can someone explain to me why anyone would pay that much for a dog?

She is home     two days and two  nights   my little girl was 4 houses down one of the few we didn't check

The couple that found her were people that had a big honest heart      I have to evaluate the skin color

So hard to admit certain color of people have a different heart than us white gingo's

Reminds me back in the fifty's growing up around half my neighborhood were Mexican

My 1st girlfriend was Mexican her dad busted her butt for kissing me under the stairs of the church

I remember their parents were really hard on their kids much harder than my Mom and Dad

I offered to pay them for my little doggie    they felt in sulted I could see in it their eyes I apologized

Who said you can't teach old dogs new tricks    (me being the old dog)

Old Blue

Those are common in every neighborhood park.  You left out the cheaters who meet up for  a quickie on their lunch hour.  I used to enjoy the "show" while eating my Subway.

Also common along the bike path, from Yokuts Park to Manor Dr., is the native 'NOR Tweaker' and the shy "Married Closeted Cruising Troll'. The Tweakers can be seen moving about the area on old bicycles and the Trolls come and go in SUVs and minivans.

Dead:

I was watching your Ch17 and saw a "naturalist" pointing out some small trees with the "cambium?" layer gnawed off and some other trees gnawed through post "Beaver sent to Tehach"

He was saying there were more and it appeared to be in the area of the Bako Bike Path West of Beach Park? Perhaps down just to the East of Stockdale Bridge and West of Yokuts? I'm not sure exactly where it was however.

There are numerous critters down there along bike path, especially West of Stockale Bridge prior to Enos Lane. Egrets, Skunks, Bobcat, Beaver, Rabbits, Squirrels, even an occasional Puma.

There was something in the paper a few days ago about a beaver being killed but it was not local.  It was some town back east and it was killed in town in the street near a park.

There turned out to be more than the one.

There in fact are still some felling little trees in the area

Not sure if the one that got ran over was Bucky but there are more to replace him

Still say they need to relocate them to Isabella

Can anyone tell me about the beaver that was supposedly killed this past Saturday? Mentioned on January 16 by DeadPet. I had heard they were going to spare the critter and then only saw this recent blog and nothing else about it in the news. The only one I had heard about was the one that got hit by a car and was hurt so bad (including broken legs) they euthanized it.

No kidding, people are too quick to pass judgment on Oildale.  Those people are just ignorant.  Oildale covers a large area.  I agree there are some bad parts of Oildale, but that goes for all areas of Kern County.  Some people need to get over themselves and not pass judgment.  Also the fact that this puppy was born in Oildale has absolutely no bearing on what happened.

From the drug comment, Someone obviously does not think much of oildale..............hmm.  Look around you, there are drugs and gangs everywhere in Bakersfield,  your area is not eliminated from it.

I think that if someone volunteers to pay $2,000.00 or more for a Bulldog, chances are it will be taken care of and I don't think it becomes an issue that Mrs. Percival would have to "worry about her precious babies."  I personally would not pay that much for a dog, but there are some people who obviously do, and I am sure that most, if not all of them take excellent care of them.  I have never heard of an English Bulldog being at the pound and certainly not being euthanized because of the fact no one wanted them.  They are such an expensive dog that I bet if one showed up at the pound it wouldn't be there for long.  I also happen to know that Mrs. Percival takes excellent care of her puppies and does keep in contact with the people who buy from her, some have came back after a few years to buy another from her.

It never ceases to amaze me that people care so little about the euthanasia rate here. It's appalling for a town as big as Bakersfield to do so little regarding this issue.

I am glad to see there are so many animal lovers out there but it just seems like a whole lot of talk and no body wants to do anything about it. I am going to the meeting tonight and voice my opinions, I challenge each and every one of you who have or had a pet in  your life to come and stand up for the animals . These precious creatures cannot defend themselves. I cant stand that all of these animals are being killed because some people are so stupid, lazy and cold. It has to start somewhere.

What is amazing is that a very serious crime has been committed here and that has not even been mentioned once.  It seems that no one is concerned that criminals are out there stalking our elderly.  Maybe next time it will be the bull or the motorcycle that vanishes.  Hopefully the suspects will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  Hopefully someone will see that blue eyed bull dog eventually and will bring her home.

FYI, she knows where each and every one of her babies are, she sees them regularly and talks to the new parents on a regular basis.  They all have good possiblities of not ever having to see the pound.

Shame on you people that take your own animals to the dogpound, they do not even get the possibility of adoption, they are euthanized without a chance, whether they be pups, kittens or adults, they do not have to put these animals up for adoption.

The English Bulldog has not really been bred to the point of a flat face, this is the way the breed has always been.

Direct descendants of the flat-faced wolf?

Chico,

We bought a CD with different "sounds" for teaching birds to sing.

We played several but he really seemed to like the tequila one the best so I played it about an hour a day for a week or so. I really didn't think it would work but he sings it all the time its really sweet :-) He also says pretty bird and he really LOVES to just get in the window and scream! ha ha

Wonder who taught him that?

I'm with you on that ~Chico~....got a 'pound dog' many moons ago and lived for 13 years...BEST dog we had..it seems like the ones that are rescued-know it-and the reward is unconditional LOVE...to this day,I still laugh and cry for that dog...and he was a mutt and one of the family....

Chico,

You are so right!
Shelter pets are truly loving and they thank you literally EVERYDAY for rescuing them. They know a hard life and they love you forever when you finally show them the love and safety they may never have known.

It isn't just dogs and cats either. We rescued two doves that had been nearly starved to death. They looked so sad :-(

We have had them almost 4 years and they are so beautiful! I love them!

Also our cocktail was given to the pound here and he was so mean. The lady there called us and we picked him up. I sure don't know what he had been through but he was one PO'ed bird!

It's been about 2 years now and he is pretty easy going (on his terms ha  ha) he even whistles the Tequila song :0) Hence his name Tequila.

Best dogs I EVER had were from pound!

You can't tell me dogs aren't smart.

They were so appreciative!

Ronny Reagan used to say theres nothing like the outside of a horse for the inside of a man

I'd have to say something similar for the dog.

Especially one from the pound!!

I feel bad for this lady too. But... she really should NOT be adding to pet over population JUST for money!

It is sad and wrong on so many levels!

When I was a kid I used to have to take care of the neighbors English Bulldog "Brit".

One time I didn't get over there for a couple of days and that damn dog had torn one of their kitchn chairs to shreds. It was a thick vinyl chair with this cotton stuffing and it was everywhere!

I looked at old Brit and his flat snoot and teef a stickin' straight out at me and wondered "how in the hell did he even do that?"

I felt pretty bad but when his "parents" got home they explained to me that he would go nuts when no one was around to love on him.

I loved that ol dog. I can see why people get so attached to them. What they are willing to pay for them is another matter.

I can buy a couple a good brangus bulls (or now even pure reg angus) for what that 08 bulldog was going for!

English Bulldogs are very expensive to raise.  Not only money wise but time wise. For one, they have to be artificially insemenated, puppies delivered by cesearean section, puppies fed with the mother every two hours. Then pups have to be vet checked, wormed, and shots. I myself prefer going to the pound, where I always seem to adopt the best and smartest heinz 57's. This woman puts her heart and soul into these English Bulldogs. She is not your typical breeder. She raises very socialized pups. She has been known to keep  unsellable pups, due to birth defects instead of euthanizing them, and pay vet bills on them, and make them family pets at her home. I have witnessed this myself. I feel sad for this woman, because she is part of the older generation and a little naive, and never thought about someone committing such a horrible act in her own home. Well that's today's society!!!!

Explorer: Science of Dogs [TV-G Ratings N/A] Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 10P http://www.brightcove.tv/ti...

The dog is one of mankinds prolific creatures. With 400 breeds and counting, the dog is more varied in size and behavior than any other species on the planet. NGC looks at mans evolutionary manipulation of dogs appearance, talents and temperament and the accelerating efforts to create breeds to suit our needs (more than 80 percent of todays breeds did not exist 150 years ago).

This show aired on the National Geographic Channel in Dec

Did anyone see it?
I cannot find more info than the above so far :-( but it was a real eye opener on the whole breeding thing.

Like Robb said there are so many things that have gone wrong from it. Like bad hips, shorter lives, blindness, breathing problems, mental illness, etc...

This was a fantastic show.

The reason registered English Bulldogs are so expensive, is due to the fact that they are expensive to the breeder from birth to 8 weeks of age.

1. They have to be artificially inseminated. 2. Puppies have to be delivered by cesearean section. 3. Puppies have to be fed every 2 hours, (with the mother) and then taken away, or she will smother them. 3. Vet checked, shots and wormed. Very expensive.

The English Bulldog has not really been bred to the point of a flat face, this is the way the breed has always been. English Bulldogs are expensive but well worth it as a pet for the family. They are good with kids and other animals. They do become part of the family, as most dogs do. I for one, go to the dog pound and adopt my dogs, I don't care for registered breeds either. I just feel sorry for this elderly woman as she puts alot of time and effort into these bulldog babies, she is not your typical breeder. She has actually kept some of her puppies that had problems, like a cleft pallet, paid for surgerys, and kept these dogs as pets of her own. Sherry Aal

I see Vizslas are going for about $1,000 now. We've had two. The first was $100 from a backyard breeder and that's not a good thing to recommend. That dog wasn't socialized properly. I think Bogey was $600. As much as we love them, we probably won't go down the purebred road again. The English bulldog in this story, and other dogs like pugs, are perfect examples of breeding gone to far. With their snouts done away with, they have breathing problems, duh.
