Mother gives up newborn to Bakersfield fire station
I want to applaud the mother who brought her 3-hour-old newborn to a southwest Bakersfield fire station under the state's Safely Surrendered Baby Law.

It's an obviously painful decision. Parents have two weeks to reclaim the baby.

But it comes after we've written far too many stories about babies dumped in trash cans or fields to die when this option was available.

Bakersfield Fire Battalion Chief Garth Milam said the baby was dropped off at 3:30 a.m. Friday at Fire Station 15, 1415 Buena Vista Road.

The Bakersfield Fire Department gets safely surrendered babies about twice a year, Milam said.

“Most of the time the woman is in such distress that it’s good to get the child to professional care,” he said.

This newborn now has a better chance at a happy and fulfilling life thanks to the courage of this mother to put the baby's needs first.

I would totally agree with you on this one Steve. She did the right thing in the child's best interest. A very rare quality in most of today's younger generation. I too applaud her for her selfless action.

What an excellent example for our community.  We need more men and women to act this responsibly.

A baby's life may have been saved.  It's a great program to have in place.

I don't applaud her. I don't think she should have had the child to begin with. I do applaud the fact our society has a capability to take that child in because the mother couldnt or didnt want to take care of it.

The Newborn is no doubt the better for it, but the fact is many wemon have children when they are in no position to take care of them and just expect help instead of being prepared or able to care for thier child. That trend needs to stop.

True, but women do not have babies without some assistance. This is a good day, and I applaud the young womans choice.

Bakersfieldstuperman, you are joking, right? You have not even ONE bit of knowledge of why this woman did this. Not her age, martial status, ANYTHING! I could list a bunch of possible reasons, but it really doesn't matter. If you are that narrow minded, I sure hope you don't vote or ever get called for jury duty.

I absolutley think she did such a brave and wonderful thing. I have always wondered why people did not use this more often. We always hear the stories of the babies being left in trash cans or trash bags and they never survive. I wish her all the best in life. Maybe things will turn around for her someday.

at least she didn't engage in the killing of the most vulnerable amongst us, pre or post birth

if you are against the murder of those that can't fend for themselves, at least give her credit for that

animals and the unborn

if we cannot stand up for them, then we are nothing

For the baby's sake, thank goodness there is a way to safely surrender the child.... and as for the mother, she should take measures towards preventing unwanted pregancies in the future...

Including, if needed, safe, legal, early abortion.

lets go to the most vulnerable of the vulnerable RF

out of sight out of mind

at least partial birth allows people to see the killing outright

if we don't see it, they really can't hurt us politically now can they?

Chico, safe, legal abortion has done more good for society than any safe-surrender program--as much as I cheer surrender programs (and I do).  I celebrate the great compromise that Roe v. Wade forged and will do all I can to keep it in place.  Thank God for abortion, and may his nonexistent wrath damn five members of SCOTUS, who reached into a bad situation and managed to make it worse.

Not even misguided, Chico.  Awake, aware and thinking.
