What do you like about the Kern County Fair?
We here at the newspaper are gearing up to cover the upcoming Kern County Fair, which begins Sept. 20.

We would like to know what you like about the Kern County Fair?

I love the animals, especially the kids hanging around their sheep, pigs and cows.

And I like to watch the Kern County people. They all seem like a fair attraction.

Ah, the fair.  When I was in high school, my band played at the fair.  It was great.  I love the food, the animals, the rides.  Man, there's nothing wrong with a fair at the end of summer.

The fair used to be a great family outing.  Take the kids, ride some rides, eat a corn dog, some corn on the cob, some cotton candy, listen to some good music, have a great day.  Now, if you want to take the family to the fair, you have to mortgage the house!  I realize that Kern County has done it's part to keep the cost down, but if the kids want to ride the rides, forget about it!  Even on the family discount days, the wristbands are too overpriced for families with more than two kids.  But there's still the exhibits.  I love all the art, the needle work, the photography, the ceramics, the livestock.  It's just hard to keep the kids interested in these things.

Good way to get the kids interested in those things is to get them to compete.  What kid doesn't want to make something that is all theirs?

Fried Twinkies. They're oh so bad for you and oh so good.

I know it's an outdoor event, but I hate it when people are smoking all over the place. Sure, they're kind enough not to smoke in the covered areas, but still, I have to walk through the open areas, too. The Fair should consider banning smoking on the fairgrounds during the Fair. The smokers can just puff away at the gates and everyone can enjoy the fresh (ahem!) air inside.

The commerical exhibits.  These days, with no kids to dizzy, they're the only reason I go.

Enter through the main gates with the Longhorn greeting.
Turn left and go through first exhibit building.  Get lots of useless stuff.
Exit that building and go through the fine arts building.  Decide that my handmade  stuff is better and next year I will enter and prove it.
Exit fine arts building  through the garden competition area.
Head towards the food consessions.
Eat 3000 calories worth of corn, potatoes, BBQ and drink a beer to wash it down.
Wander around the south exhibit building and buy several cinnamon rolls and get more useless stuff.  Exit  to the south and look for the photographs and cities  competition building.  Do that building.
Debate with rest of family about  looking at the animals.  Decide to sit down and wait for younger family members while they check out the baby animals.
Breathe in the sights and sounds of approaching fall.
Loving it.

Corn on the cob, beer, exhibits, the music, the people, and visiting the photo booth are all my favorites at the fair.
Driving by the grounds and seeing the rides being assembled reminds me of many good times there.
We haven't been to the fair in two years, maybe this year we'll go.

I've always enjoyed the livestock portion of the Fair. When I was a kid, I, and most of my friends used to show lovestock. When I got older, I used to go and help the kids groom their animals for the show. It was a lot of fun.

I've been to several Fairs in different States, but the livestock part is never as good as it is in the West. I miss it a lot. Maybe when I retire (in about 4 years) and I move back, there'llbe an organization that'll let me help out with the show animals again.

There were people that I knew who were really successful in Livestock showing (but not me). I still enjoyed seing them win, as much as if it were me, myself. Boy, it was great! I had a friend who showed a Horse all over the area. She, and her family were really into it. When she'd do well, I was so proud of her, that I could bust. She earned it. It would make my whole week. I think that I was more proud of her (and her Horse) that she was of herself. This Girl was a real Dandy!

I've always loved the fair and all the hubbub.  It's a great people watching experience and a great food experience.  We usually all end up there (as a family) on at least one night.  When we find out we're all going we come in from 3 directions and thank goodness for cell phones.  Most of the time one or more of the family has an exhibit...usually in photography and in the past..in collectables.  Mark has had two major awards out there..one for a diarama and another a glass etching.  He'd have to give the particulars.

Things like that make it fun to go to see the ribbons won ....or not..

I continually tell tales that embarress one of the family so this is no exception.  When grandson was little we lived in Tehachapi.   After our yearly trek to the fair we were driving away and grandson looked out the window..waved..and said "bye fairy."   Gee..he sounded so sad.  I chuckled then and still do.  It was sooooo cute.  I guess you hadda be there tho..LOL

Not HAVING to go. My kids are way past past that age that I HAD to take them.
But if I CHOOSE to go........the food. All the junk food you can feasibly devour while cruising through the exhibits and livestock.

Hummmm.... food - corn on the cob, baked potato. Maybe a caramel apple. Beer. Plenty of food and beer. Don't forget the curly fries stack. Hummm. Maybe time for another beer. Exhibits, exhibits, exhibits. Should I have some taffy? Then, the hypnotist (yes, I see him every year, but it's still fun). Sit at the corner where the vet's beer/food booth is and watch the people (now that's what I call FUN!). Lastly,  Anonymous, I might be smoking my cigarette while people watching. Sorry!

Last year when my wife and me were ready to pay @ the booth the lady said are you seniors? Yes, it's free today for you!
Right then our eyes lit up, more food with a extra $ 20 bucks. I went straight to the Margarita booth, she went to the potatoes, then we headed to the corn, mmmmmmmmmm, then I went back to the Margarita booth, then we headed to the Mexican wagon. Finally, we sat and watched the crowd, 4 hours of just sitting and watching, we had more fun than any other fair.

If we can find out this year if they still offer a free day for Seniors, were going, just like little kids, looking for all the goodies.

Ah bakonative:  Exactly the reason I will be voting yes on you be taxed another $2.46 per pack.  At least if I have to inhale you smoke, I'll get the pleasure of knowing it is costing you more than just our health.

People watching #1 for sure!
& Cold Beer @ the Basque Club - seeing the livestock - and the Kettle Corn - yum!
Sometimes the ride area is kinda scarey with the 'gangstahs' tho ... I used to enjoy the concerts, who is playing this year?

Not to take anything away from anyone but after going to the Kern County Fair for over 30 years, I'm pretty much bored with it.  The reason?  Well, nothing has really changed except the price of everything.  Every year, it costs a little more to park your vehicle and a little more to go in through the gate and a little more to purchase something to eat or drink.  Everything else is pretty much the same.  Same type of food, same booths, same type of carnival, same type of mineral and plant exhibitions, same type of Rodeo and same type of dust in the air.

I remember K.C. Fairs when there was great entertainment and it was worth paying the the price.......whether they were popular Country and Western musicians, popular Latino musical groups and stars or  Super (big foot) Trucks exhibitions.  Why limit the super stars to the Rabobank Arena?  Bring them to the Kern County Fair also like you used to.  Make the fair more interesting to everyone.   I've been to other fairs in the state (Santa Clara County Fair, San Luis Obispo County Fair, Fresno County Fair) and I've found them very enjoyable due to the exhibits and the entertainment.

Not to worry, after all this, I'll still go to the fair this year to find an exhibit booth with something I haven't seen before.  I don't want to break tradition.

I've always liked being able to show the animals. I showed a pig every year at the fair from fourth grade to 11th grade. This year, I'm not doing anything at the fair except my photography because my parents wanted to take a break from the animal shows. Really, they're just tired of buying a pig every year for me to take to the fair. I'm sad because I've always enjoyed getting out there in the show ring, nervous and all, to keep my eye on the judge and show my pig. On the other hand, I don't have to wake up at 5 a.m. every morning to go out to the fair and feed the pig. Oh, sweet freedom.

I remember my 1st trip to the fair after moving here in 92.  I got stuck on The Zipper for over 2 hrs.  The belt slipped and I got off the ride by climbing down a firetruck ladder.  I haven't ridden any fairrides ever since.  Hard to trust "temporary" structures like that.

These days, it's all about the food, the animals and the exhibits!

we always go to see the exhibits, eat the food, see the animals, it is just fun. my kids have put entries in the fair the last couple of years and have done quite well. this year in addition to those, they each have an animal too. we love to go and just have fun. something different to do to break up the day.

I like the fake cowboys in tight jeans, boots, and baseball caps. Oh and don't forget the girls in their tight jeans, boots, tight cleavage showing shirts, and cowboy hats. It's a drunkfest for the hicks and a war for the gang bangers. Oh, the food is good too.

I liked leaving it after having the worst, oldest, and most expensive frozen bannana ever. Seriously though, I wouldn't want to have missed last year's building with the "beach scenes", an extraordinarily ghastly, jaw-dropping exhibition. They actually had blue ribbons on the least retarded looking piles of sand strewn with umbrellas and towels. Absolutely hilarious!
