Yippee⁄! Lady roller derby is coming to town
Well, lady might be a stretch, but definitely female.

Reporter Danielle Belton wrote about 40 women who have signed up for what is expected to become in October the Bakersfield roller derby league.

These women will go around an oval track and elbow, push or bump each other in an effort to score points. What can be more fun than that.

What male baby boomer out there didn't tune in on Saturday afternoons in the 1950s and 1960s to watch the Bay City Bombers knock their competitors around the oval track?

These weren't belles of the ball. These were belles of the brawl.

Such good wholesome entertainment. Hard to imagine what might have been going on in the 1970s to drop this as a tv favorite.

But the sport, invented in 1935, is making a comeback and if all the right pieces fall in place, Bakersfield could have its own teams of bump and grinders.

About 8 years ago, I went to the roller derby, and it was a hoot. It only took about 12 seconds to realize the whole thing is totally fake. Once you get over that, it's a good time. I saw the New York demons and they had a 65 year old lady with rainbow colored hair that was nuts. She attacked the ref and got ejected to a chorus of boos.

C'mon, Steve!  The Bay City Bomber were the bad guys, er, girls!  It was the LA Thunderbirds that rocked!!!!  I still remember one big black gal named Shirley...she was so big, her jersey number was 747...I loved watching RD, not to mention watching Pat Patterson and Rocky Johnson tag team the bad guys every Saturday afternoon on wrasslin.  Ah, the good ole days of UHF TV.

Jeff,
   There are no bad women.

The Bay City Bombers had this hot scrappy blonde and this big bruiser blonde (I, of course, am using blonde in the physical description mode, not some insensitive stereotypical mode) in which scrappy zoomed around the track and bruiser decked anyone she could get her appendages on.

It didn't matter what team. They all rocked.

I'm with Jeff - Thunderbirds were always here at the Civic - and what fun it was to watch. Boy, that ages me. Do they use rollerblades now or the old skates? Hey, I'll go see them knock each other around.
And what about that guy.... hum,,, Ringo, or something.....

The current roller derby revival is not the same as what you saw in the '70s and definitely not fake!  Yes, the previous age of derby was excentric in a purposefully crowd pleasing way, but let me assure you we will be just as crowd pleasing without the theatrics :)

bakonative- We use quad skates, not rollerblades.
