E-mails, the burden of modern society
E-mail has gone from the cute premise of "You've Got Mail" movie romance, to a burden that weighs us down and hampers productivity.

Reporter Katherine Reynolds Lewis of Newhouse News Services asks the question, "Do you ever sit down to check your e-mail 'for a minute' and the next thing you know, two hours have passed?

The story explains how people in business can reduce the time wasted by writing better e-mails.

But my question is whether e-mails have become a burden at your workplace. How do you handle it?

I get about 100 e-mails a day. I read a fair number of them, but I spend a good half hour either reading them or deleting them.

And I find that some people aren't good at communicating with e-mails — they don't know how to set a tone so what they think is a joke, is actually a hurtful message.

There's no body language in e-mails.

Talking is old fashioned, but far more effective.

Email has been a boon to my programming career. I've saved them all, so I can do a search if some problem sounds familiar. No way I could keep all that stuff in my head.

Email is a fairly big part of my communication even at the office.  There, we are all notified of upcoming meetings, trainings, new policies, and most importantly, upcoming potlucks.  It saves going from person to person or calling everyone.

In my personal life emails are a blessing because my family and I work all kinds of different hours and this lets us stay in touch when we're not able to call.  It allows us to leave messages that aren't urgent and to share events or news with everyone all at once.

With my sister living in another state, it allows me to stay in touch with her daily as opposed to the phone where we have to deal with a two hour time difference.  When I would think to call in the evening, it would be too late there.  Email knows no time boundaries.

I don't get as much email as I used to so it isn't a problem for me. Loveitloveitloveit.

Sounds to me like Steve needs a good spam filter.

Email is great, I don't get much because I don't send much, and I don't have a work email. Other than that, my 3 or so email accounts don't take me much time to go through. Gotta always have one junky one (like hotmail) to enter into those things you know put you on spam lists.
