Sunshine. This really is why we all live here. And that time of year has come again. Started about a week ago. The question is how are you going to play in it? Over the weekend, my sweetheart and I went to the Rivernook Campground just outside of Kernville.  Everyone was out, including a mountain lion, the campground hosts noted. We didn't see it, but the frogs in the creek at night kept up a boisterous racket. We went fishing in the river. My wife caught one. I...

And who says we don't report good news? Three years ago, two adult kit foxes and four pups were killed during a landscaping project at the East Hills Mall. This week, a new family of kit foxes have been spotted near the same place where the 2004 tragedy occurred. Two adults and up to six pups are inhabiting a den, according to the Cal State Stanislaus Endangered Species Recovery Program. The adults are out eating gophers, squirrels and the ever-popular human castoffs of pizza and...

Rosedale Highway, one of the busiest roads in Bakersfield, isn't expected to be widened on the town's western edges any time soon. Residents have complained of the danger to turn left off the highway out near Jenkins Road and Renfro Road where it is a two-lane road. A project to install stoplights at Renfro Road is expected to be completed by fall, but there are no current plans to widen the road west of Allen Road. Do you think such a project needs to be placed on a front burner? ...

On Wednesday, a crew of 16 Bakersfield police officers, city workers, a code enforcement officer and an animal control officials began removing homeless people who have set up camps along the Kern River. The city said people riding the bike paths have complained about homeless people and that is one reason the periodic sweeps along the river took place on Wednesday. Some of the homeless people said it is convenient for them to live there and now they don't know where they will live....

This blog idea comes from an emoticon that tkozy used in one of his posts.  It had the little face holding a sign that says, "I crack myself up." I could have written that. While I find most people, including comedians, to be not very funny at all, I can't help but be amazed at how truly hilarious I am. And there are people in my life who do make me laugh out loud most of the time. My wife, being one of them. I can't publicly share any of her humor, but trust me here,...

Two northwest Bakersfield neighborhoods will get new parks this year. Money raised in the North of the River Recreation and Park District was given this week to the City of Bakersfield to build parks at Madison Grove and San Lauren. The timing comes after City Councilman David Couch in March wondered what NOR was doing with $6.8 million it has collected for parks. North Meadows Park in Oildale is already underway and should be ready by late next month. Other parks in line are...

This topic is brought to you by Californian columnist Herb Benham who was inspired by a toothache to go to the dentist he feared had forgotten him. Turns out the dentist is always there for Herb, or any of his patients. There was a period in my younger life when I didn't go to the dentist for about 10 years. No insurance. Then I went and was told on that visit they would just try to knock out the big pieces. Four more visits were scheduled as they numbed my mouth and worked on the...

Californian columnist Valerie Schultz in a piece to run April 14 writes about her fascination with whether birth order affects how people are. She says the the birth order theory, presented in 1923 by the Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler, asserts that the order in which you are born into your family has a measurable effect on who you turn out to be. If you are the oldest, for example, you are likely to be very responsible, and to take charge of situations. If you are the baby, you...

A news story says that California drivers bought less gasoline in 2006 than the year before, a  drop of less than one percent. I'll bet the trend is continuing this year as prices have jumped up to $3.30 or more. This makes me want to live in another state. There is a price for California goofiness. We haven't even hit the tourist season yet when prices no doubt will rise more. I am so glad our oil companies are making record profits again. I just hate it when they whine. ...

This issue came up on another blog, so I decided to do a separate blog on it. What are your first memories as a child? How old were you? I can remember when I was 2 and 3 and living in Elm Grove, Wis. I remember my dog (who once brought a cow's hoof from the farm next door), my house, falling in a neighbor's pool, a pig snorting his nose at my sister, (I should not admit this) wetting my bed, watching Superman on black and white tv, going in the woods across the street to a knotty...

First of all, that just sounds dirty. But in an Associated Press story by Martha Irvine, it seems that people are checking out their dates on the Google search engine to find out more about them. One woman scratched a guy off her list when she saw his MySpace page of him naked in a  bath tub. Yes, I get naked in my bath tub too, but I don't post that publicly with a photograph. It works the other way too. Sometimes you find great information about a person and it makes you...

I've been a journalist for 30 years and the most heartbreaking part of the job is stories about innocent victims of car crashes. These are people like 36-year-old Daniel Dawson, husband and father of two, who was at a stop light Saturday when a parolee was trying to outrun the police and crashed into Dawson's car, killing him. So now suddenly, Dawson's wife, Rhonda, and two children, Andrew, 11, and Jordan, 9, are without the man who has been the center of their lives.  He was a...

Californian columnist Valerie Schultz has written for publication on April 7 a column on remembering the first time she was ever dumped. It was in 7th grade after a week of hand holding with John, who gave her a hair ribbon every day, until one day he began wooing Elizabeth the same way. Valerie says you never forget. So true. Mine was Jan Wyman, who I met at a dance as a sophomore in an all boys, boarding  school in Olympia, Wa.  I loved her with all my heart for a year. ...

We are curious if anyone pulled an April Fool's joke or prank. I was too busy to do anything like that. But one got pulled on me. A woman called me up and said I won a contest at Sundale Country Club. I would get a free dinner and a free bottle of wine per month. (I didn't remember entering any contest, so I was a little surprised) Then she said they would need a photo of me in a bubble bath. That's when I realized it was the wife of a golfing buddy of mine. Did you do...

I'm not sure if this is just me, or if cooking skills in America have just deteriorated overall. My parents and former in-laws are great cooks. My wife and I possess the cooking skills of small children. Gourmet is a word in the dictionary, not in our kitchen. I can barbecue. My wife can make some basic pasta dishes. Thanksgiving turkeys are pushing our envelopes. Hamburger Helper is our friend. Frozen lasagna is a staple. Microwave hot dogs are squarely within our talent range....
