About 60 miles north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, there is a collection of former Kern County sheriff's deputies who have either retired there or spend their summers there.
They live in Hope, Idaho, on Lake Pend Oreille (pondoray), a 148-square mile, ear-shaped (French meaning of Pend Oreille), deep blue lake (more than 1,150 feet deep) with scenery that will knock your socks off.
It has an island just for bald and golden eagles.
Some deputies live on a peninsula in the lake which...
Californian reporter James Geluso wrote about downtown redevelopment projects, highlighting the proposed Maya Cinemas, a 16-theater complex planned on California Avenue at P Street by December 2008.
He also wrote about the status of other downtown projects, including the Mill Creek proposals for residential and commercial development along the Kern Island Canal.
I am not anxiously awaiting a downtown theater because I have no trouble seeing any movie I want to.
But I think the image...
This is the next installment of you write the caption.
The caption that went with this picture was: Saint, a three-year-old golden retiever, catches a wave in Morro Bay, Calif., Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007. His owner, Kat Young, said he has been surfing most of his life. (AP Photo/The Tribune, Jayson...
My caption would be, "Most owners throw a stick. My human has to throw a surfboard!"
It is downright shocking that Oakland editor Chauncey Bailey, a former Oakland Tribune reporter, was gunned down in a targeted hit as he walked to work Thursday.
The Committee to Protect Journalists have documented an average 34 journalists per year were killed during the 10 years before 2004 as the Iraq war was in full swing. It's jumped for more than 50 per year since.
But it is very rare that a local journalists gets killed in his home town where he writes stories about his...
Bakersfield City Manager Alan Tandy proposed adding $2,865 to the existing $6,800 fees for traffic impact — a total of $9,665.
Developers were outraged, and I'm with them.
It's not developers who pay those fees. They are passed along to new home buyers. And adding nearly $10,000 to the price of a new home is a horrible way to pay for roads.
It puts a huge burden on a relatively few people.
The roads are everyone's responsibility and I am in favor of an additional half-cent...
We thought it would be fun to post a picture and let you write a caption for it.
So we're doing that here.
The actual caption for this photo is: A Persian is inspected by a judge Sunday, July 29, 2007, during the All Breed Cat show in Winchester, Va. (AP Photo/The Journal, Martin B. Cherry)
My caption would be:
Fluffy Face, too full of herself to obey, needs help from bejeweled hands to look precious.
I'm going to get in trouble for this, but this just shows how much courage and/or stupidity I have.
We had a dinner party the other night for one of my golfing buddies and his wife, Glenn and Teresa Hammett. They're very nice people for being vegetarians.
My wife was up at 4 a.m. worrying about at least 100 things about the party.
I don't have that much depth. Pick up the house a little, cook something and have those mini chocolate eclairs for desert.
My wife outdid...
